Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has been synonymous with Indian bridal couture for a while now. The Kolkata-based designer is known not only for his beautiful bridal creations, but also for being one of Bollywood’s favourite designers. A long list, including Deepika Padukone , Priyanka Chopra, Karisma Kapoor , Kangana Ranaut, Rani Mukherjee, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kalki Koechlin and Anushka Sharma, has the designer in their wedding wear rotation.
With his obvious popularity among Indian brides and grooms, it’s no surprise that many of Bollywood’s leading ladies including Bipasha Basu, Asin Thottumkal and Anushka Sharma, chose to wear a Sabyasachi outfit to tie the knot. While Bipasha Basu picked a patent red and gold Sabyasachi lehenga, Thottumkal chose a nude look for her big day. Most recently, Anushka Sharma showcased her love for the designer via her wedding pictures, which were all over our Instagram feeds in December 2017. The actor stayed loyal to the designer for all her ceremonial outfits—a blush pink Sabyasachi lehenga for the pheras, a bohemian lehenga for the mehendi, vermilion brocade Sabyasachi sari for the Delhi reception, and a vintage gold lehenga for the Mumbai one.
Many other celebrities favour the designer’s ensembles frequently—for weddings and Diwali parties to red carpet events and movie screenings. Over the years, some Bollywood stars have embraced Sabyasachi’s saris, while others have been spotted acing chikankari kurtas, longline jackets and sharara sets. For Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra, the designer has been a constant in their ethnic wardrobes. While Rai Bachchan is often seen favouring his chikankari kurtas, the Quantico actor is often spotted in his intricate saris. Kangana Ranaut, too, has been an ardent fan of designer’s dramatic drapes. The actor has tried everything from Sabyasachi’s signature floral saris, to his brocade numbers.
But on a list of the staunchest supporters of the couturier, Deepika Padukone would feature among the top few. If an occasion calls for ethnic wear, chances are that Padukone will be in a Sabyasachi sari. From walking the IIFA red carpet to attending a friend’s wedding, the actor never shies away from favouring his dramatic ensembles. Most recently, Padukone was seen in a number of looks from the designer during Padmaavat ‘s promotional rounds, and she also picked a traditional Sabyasachi sari for a special occasion— her dad’s felicitation with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
