6 biggest beauty trends from the spring/summer 2018 runways

The spring runways reinvented makeup rules—the wings spread wider, the colours shifted spaces, the glow got glowier. Forget sweet romance—it’s the summer of bold, beautiful love. 1 /17
THE HOT HUES: RED AND PINK The two most classic colours in makeup are also the most clichéd. Not just reserved for lips and nails anymore, they’re now crossing over to uncharted territory. The shades showed up as beautiful washes on the eyes and got draped high on the cheeks, even mingled with a bit of glitter and gloss on spring runways. Valentino

Bright eyes Anchor pink or red eyeshadows with a bit of black—a black eyeliner or mascara will ground the colour and lend it definition. Patine

Sweet cheeks Nothing says spring like pink cheeks. For a fresher, bolder take on blush , take it way past cheekbones and drape your face with a brilliant flush of colour. Aureole

THE TEXTURE: GLITTER The last few seasons, sparkles are flying everywhere. They’re being patted on the eyes, dabbed on the lips, swiped on the nails and even spread on the cheeks for some dramatic appeal. Glitter is now grown-up, and makeup artistes this season introduced new ways to shine: combed through lashes, layered over smoky, as a psychedelic wash on the lids and even a full-on rhinestone-encrusted disco party. For spring, the sparkle spectrum looked something like this: From fine shimmer to a smattering of chunky rhinestones. Payal Pratap

THE MOOD: NUDE For spring, designers sent out their models bare-faced and beautiful, with nothing but their skin on. With a little help from highlighters, of course. The glow at Issey Miyake, Nina Ricci and Giambattista Valli was as much about skin as it was about makeup. The blueprint Time to step away from your powders. For this luminous look, the texture of the products shouldn’t be matte or shimmery but creamy so it looks like your skin (but better). Ikai

The eyes For eyes that don’t look made up, choose a neutral-toned eyeshadow that’s a tad darker than the skin on your eyes, and enhance the creases. Try a creamy taupe. Alexander Wang

The cheeks Choose a colour that goes almost invisible when blended into your skin and leaves behind just a hint of flush on your cheeks. Spread a cream-based highlighter on your cheekbones with your fingers. Even a clear balm works in a pinch. Simone Rocha

The lips Think sheer, not shimmery. A sheer, tinted lip balm that enhances your natural lip colour is literally all you need. Giambattista Valli Get the look: Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, Becca Beach Lip and Blush Tint in Guava, Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer in Radiant Finish, Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm in Pink Glow, M.A.C Hyper Real Glow Next to Nothing Face Colour, Clinique Beyond Perfecting Super Concealer, Dior Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm in Ultra Pink, Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Caramel, Tatcha Gold Camellia Beauty Oil, Marc Jacobs Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator.

THE INSPIRATION: GRAFFITI Erratic swoops were tastefully drawn across—and away from—the lids; sharp shapes defined the curves; bold brush strokes created killer colour contrasts… It’s like the artist erred, almost deliberately, to really exaggerate the shape of the masterpiece—the eye. The look: Razor-sharp graphic wing The liner: Lakmé Eyeconic Liner Pen – Block Tip The lesson: This modern matte flick comes with a sense of visible rebellion. Using an angled-tip pen, outline a thick wing from the centre of your lid, flicked easily outside the curve of the eye, dragging the pen away from the edge. Fill it in and top it off with a graphic shape right above the inner crease. Complete with a dark, shapely arch. Ashish N Soni

The look: Delicately drawn brush strokes The liner: Chanel Signature de Chanel Style Eyeliner in N°10 Noir The lesson: Using a thin liquid pen, layer slim, subtle swipes of black along the edges and curves of the lid—as many as you please as long as there is no back and forth. Finish with a surprising stroke of burning red to fill in the gap. Ashley Williams

THE PALETTE: COLOURS OF THE SEA The season of spring sneaked a beach escape and splashed the colours of the ocean on the eyes like a wave. Starting with a cool, turquoise flick, ending with a big, beautiful wash of aquatic hues—there’s inspiration for every ocean lover here. There were swatches of metallic peacock green and blue at Marni, embodying that unwavering view of the horizon, where the sky meets the sea at dusk.

The deep blue waters are as majestic as they are mysterious under the night sky, and some of it manifested at Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna. A solid sculptural dash of turquoise anchored the face.

The eyes at Tadashi Shoji and Philipp Plein sparkled a pastel fluorescent, mirroring the mystical life underwater, conjuring up images of mermaids and magic.
