THE HABITS AND FOODS THAT CAN CAUSE PROBLEM TEETH
The bad habit Pressure: If your bite is off and you’re grinding your teeth, the pressure can lead to chipping, cracks, bone loss, gum recession and eventually tooth loss. Get a night guard to prevent you from clenching and use a toothpaste and mouthwash with either hydroxylapatite or fluoride. For teeth sensitivity, potassium nitrate, found in pastes like Sensodyne, is good.
The bad ingredients Sugar/Tea/Coffee: When there is a high level of sugar in the mouth, whether from sweets or from sugary drinks like soda, the bacteria uses the sugar to produce acids and starts breaking down the tooth enamel, causing decay. Excessive caffeinated coffee and tea can dry out the mouth, so it’s important to counteract that by cutting down on consumption and drinking lots of water. Also, acidic foods like citrus erode enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay over time. Tooth or fiction What makes the perfect smile? “One of the biggest misconceptions about smiles is that people think a beautiful smile is symmetrical. It’s definitely not. A great smile has asymmetries, slight ones, that balance with the asymmetries of the face. It’s the complete picture that creates a beautiful smile.” THE REGIMEN TO FOLLOW FOR PERFECT TEETH
How to get the most out of the basic ritual
Brush The number one mistake people make while brushing is not using a sonic tooth brush. The vibration on sonic toothbrushes gives an enhanced attention to cleaning areas between the tooth and gum line where a regular, manual toothbrush cannot reach.
Floss It breaks up the plaque and bacteria in between the teeth, preventing cavities. Focus on cleaning either sides of a tooth, and whether the floss is waxed or non-waxed, it’s important to find one that you personally like so it becomes an experience you look forward to and not avoid.
Rinse Use an alcohol-free mouth rinse. Alcohol dries up the mouth and the mouth needs to be moist to prevent bacteria from causing cavities.
Care for gums Twice a day, use a gum gel that nourishes and rebuilds healthy gum tissue. Try: Apa Pink, an antioxidant-rich gel that is applied to the gums after brushing and rinsing, which helps decrease inflammation and promotes cellular regeneration to achieve healthy pink gums.
Seek professional help See your dentist for professional cleanings at least twice a year to maintain the health of the teeth and the gums. And also to check for any abnormalities in the bite. THE GADGET YOU NEED FOR SUPER WHITE TEETH
The Apa Beauty Clean White Sonic Toothbrush is famously known as the Rolls Royce of toothbrushes for good reason—it marries gentle sonic brushing for thorough cleaning, with a sleek white design—it’s a fancy way to help you smile big.
Brush up Electronic toothbrushes can be harsh; this one is designed with a lower RPM to keep enamel intact without sacrificing a thorough result. Along with 40,000 sonic vibrations per minute, it comes with brush heads crafted with gentle whitening bristles that claim to remove 35 per cent more stains than regular bristles.
Many modes The brush has three unique modes to clean, whiten and massage —the clean mode is the standard mode for superior teeth cleaning, the whiten mode polishes and whitens, and the massage mode pulsates for gentle gum stimulation.
Time up The brush will pulse every 30 seconds to alert you to move on to a different part of your mouth and will stop after two minutes for a complete, deep and effective clean.
