She’s the happiest girl in Bollywood and believes she has no purpose in life but to be just that. Glimpse into her meticulous regimes and you’ll know how everything circles around and into her little world of happy.
It’s a lazy Saturday evening and Jacqueline Fernandes is in the midst of a whirlwind of commitments. Yet there’s not a moment where her smile doesn’t reach her eye, when her laughter is not out loud and her reaction not candid. She holds forth on literally everything under the sun: beauty, fitness , happiness and life philosophy. It’s not contentment or satisfactions that keep her ticking—it is pure unadulterated appreciation. She’s thrilled to be where she is right now and the cheer is awfully infectious. From her diet discipline to her elaborate fitness routine, she lets us in on the secrets of her fit life. FOOD FOR MY MOOD
“I actually call it that.” Simply put, it’s whatever keeps her body alkaline, her skin looking great and her weight in check. Her day will begin and end with apple cider vinegar. Her protein intake is measured, but there’s a whole lot of spinach, broccoli and asparagus, a good dose of fruits, eggs and fish, idli, quinoa, rice noodles and brown rice. Sticking to the no-nos helps plan her meals better. Topping that list is sugar , followed by dairy and wheat.
“You have to look great all the time in this industry. It took me ten years to figure things out. I love coconut yoghurt, coconut sugar and stevia. I’m such a sugar snob right now. Sugar is the worst thing you can do to your body.” Rye flour or spelt flour is always handy in her kitchen; she bakes her own bread. “I’ve become the queen of alternative eating.”
A regular breakfast is egg white (or a vegetable omelette) with rye toast, a little slab of almond butter and a drizzle of manuka honey. Oatmeal or granola works too, with lots of berries, cinnamon and coconut or almond milk. With that is her killer bulletproof coffee. “You don’t know what that is?” she erupts in glee, “It’s so exciting.” Turns out, her nutribullet is an espresso shot blended with a little ghee and a spoon of coconut based MCT oil (she calls it “ brain octane ”). “MCT oil is amazing. It’s basically burned by the body for pure energy and it makes me feel unbelievable.” She loves keeping things varied in her kitchen. On days she needs to look leaner, dinner is a healthy green soup. THE GOOD STUFF IN LIFE
She packs in one green juice a day—mostly a smoothie from Raw Pressery, a brand she now partners with. She swears by intermittent fasting and finishes her meal by 7-7.30pm. “I feel light and energetic when I give my body that 12 hour break from digesting food.” She wakes up raring for a good breakfast and it’s practically impossible to eat much apart from clean and healthy. On a cheat day you’d catch her wolfing crepes from Suzette. The thought of pizza or pasta make her eyes shine, but it’s got to be gluten-free. ON HER METICULOUS FITNESS ROUTINE
“I’ve been at it for years now. Exercise is an integral part of keeping you energetic, disciplined and happy.” Growing up, she was super athletic in school. She started training properly when gearing up for Miss Sri Lanka and then Miss Universe. “Your workout has to be personalised; what you need and what you enjoy.” She diligently goes by her ‘non routine routine’ where she plans her workout on a weekly basis based on her travel plans, work hours, movie look or body goals. Various trainers feature on her speed dial. One day will be running. Or there will be a week of intense cardio when she feels she has binged a bit. Or it could be a week of two Pilates sessions, some dance, horse riding and light boxing when she needs to focus on her arms. This year has been a lot about pole —arms, core, stretches and abdomen work. “No matter what you do on pole, your upper body gets super ripped.”
If there is no-one else to help, it will be 60 minutes of skipping rope, stretching and pulling on her Pilates bands, Surya Namaskars and floor exercises for her butt. “I work a lot on my butt. It has to look toned and lifted. Now, in my 30s, I can’t take that flat tummy for granted either. ” Age isn’t getting the better of her just yet though. THE BEAUTY BOOK
She feels at her most beautiful in the morning after a 15-minute meditation. “You take on so many stressors and different energies every day. Meditation is wonderful.” As the face of Body Shop, she swears by their roster of beauty and makeup products, and has launched a line of makeup with the brand too. A vitamin E moisturiser with hyaluronic acid is very important for replenishing and plumping. She goes with a tinted moisturiser and Body Shop’s cushion foundation fortified with aloe vera for a dewy look. A dust of blusher, mascara and eyelash curlers is a must.
“I like filling in my eyebrows and doing my lips. I know exactly how to create perfect rosebud lips.” She insists it’s cool, addictive and she’d have it no other way. She used to love bright pink and red pop lips. Her current favourite is smoky eyes. The next coveted look on her list is to go all bronze with bare lips and bare eyes, and just a little lashes, brows and contouring around the eye. AN INSTANT GLOW TRICK
She pulls out a few from her repertoire. Ice is fantastic, with a vitamin C lotion, a face massage and scrubs/masks. A tried-and-tested rice and ginseng mask is used almost every night. Apart from that, she goes to her dermatologists for oxygen facials and periodic spruces with Korean beauty products. As odd as it may sound, keeping her teeth white is critical to her beauty regime. “Stained teeth just add years to your age. Charcoal is great to polish your teeth.” ON HER LOVE FOR BIG HAIR
Think ’90s supermodel, like Cindy Crawford’s voluminous hair flips. She loves the Tresemmé Botanique shampoo. A good oil massage weekly with organic coconut oil is a must, supplemented with a dose of folic acid for her hair and nails. On an average day, if there’s no time for a blow dry, she will just tie a nice high ponytail and use her super handy hair curling machine directly on to the ponytail for that artfully casual look.
