What Kate Middleton did for a living before royal life

What Kate Middleton did for a living before royal life Kate Middleton even considered becoming a photographer By Olivia Blair November 2, 2017 SHARE We often see Kate Middleton at royal events either with her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, or holding the fort by herself, representing the royal family. After marrying Prince William in April 2011, Kate performed her first solo engagement in October that year, showing she was fully dedicating herself to royal life. After all, trying to do an ordinary job shortly after millions of people watched you marry an heir to the throne is probably quite difficult. Since then she's become a regular on the official royal scene and was even seen hitting some tennis balls yesterday. But before this, what did she do? We take a look back. Pre-College Before going off to St Andrew's University, where she would meet her future husband, Kate went on a gap year. She traveled to Chile where she undertook a program with sustainable development charity Raleigh International and also studied at the British Institute in Florence, Italy. Post-Graduation After graduating in 2005 with a History of Art degree, Kate briefly worked for her parents Carole and Michael Middleton's business Party Pieces , which supplies party goods. Kate then moved to London where she worked part-time as an accessories buyer for the high-street clothing store Jigsaw Junior. The company's former owner Belle Robinson later told the Evening Standard that Kate worked hard like everyone else and was very mature at work, despite the constant following of press and paparazzi over her royal relationship. "She sat in the kitchen at lunchtime and chatted with everyone from the van drivers to the account girls. She wasn't precious," she said. She later quit the role, reportedly to have some time to herself, and there were rumours she was considering a photography career. Family Business On Party Pieces ' website, Carole credits Kate with starting the "first birthday side of the business." This was done in 2008 when the Duchess launched First Birthdays as a junior brand to Party Pieces. According to the Duke and Duchess' website, her roles included catalog design and production, marketing, and photography. In November 2010, William and Kate announced their engagement, and Kate said joining the Royal Family was "nerve-wracking," but she was willing to learn quickly and work hard.

While Deepika Padukone kickstarted Padmavati promotions in a sheer floral Sabyasachi sari (don’t miss the statement jhumkas she paired the wedding-ready ensemble with), Sonakshi Sinha spread the word about her new film, Ittefaq , in an embellished Anamika Khanna crop-and-dhoti-pants set. Shilpa Shetty Kundra opted for a belted black Shivan & Narresh cocktail sari, and Aditi Rao Hydari also favoured neutral hues, picking a black and being Mayyur Girotra lehenga. For almost everyone else, breezy skirts were the pick of the week. We spotted Gauri Khan taking her private ferry to Alibaug (where she celebrated Shah Rukh Khan’s 52 nd birthday with family and friends) in a blue and white wrap skirt, Neha Dhupia hanging out in a pleated yellow midi version, and Parineeti Chopra promoting Golmaal Again in an asymmetrical leather avatar of the staple. Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt are twinning adorably

Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt are twinning adorably They even have the same second day hair By Elle Team November 3, 2017 SHARE Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt are Bollywood's newest BFFs and we have the photos to prove it. The two stepped out of Shah Rukh Khan's Alibaug home, after the star's 52nd birthday celebrations, dressed in near-identical outfits in the way only best friends don't mind doing. Deepika and Alia matched their distressed cropped jeans — ripped at the knee — with sneakers and round-frame sunglasses. Deepika Padukone was happy to pose with newly-minted BFF, Alia Bhatt The two lead actresses even matched their second day post-wash hair, because there's no way you're going to let your bestie face the paps with post-party grease on her own. While Deepika styled her jeans with a knotted T-shirt dress, Alia chose to sport a denim jacket and a Breton striped tee. Deepika and Alia were deep in conversation, potentially debating whether dry shampoo is worth investing in Fans with keen eyesight will notice that Alia's T-shirt is identical to the one Sidharth Malhotra was spotted wearing for his chopper ride into Alibaug. When you take the chopper back home because traffic is for muggles... Sid gets his face mist on while Alia appreciates her man's adherence to good skincare. 14 celebrity friendships that prove powerful women have each others' backs

Gigi Hadid just shut down an Islamophobic tweet about the terror attack in NYC

Gigi Hadid just shut down an Islamophobic tweet about the terror attack in NYC Zero tolerance By Erica Gonzales November 3, 2017 SHARE A terror attack in New York City left eight people dead and 11 injured after a driver plowed through pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path in Lower Manhattan. In the wake of the tragedy, fellow city dwellers, everyday civilians, celebrities, and politicians sent messages of support to the victims and their families and praised New Yorkers for their strength and resilience in the face of hardship. Meanwhile, others pointed out and challenged Islamophobic responses to the attack. The driver was identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, who planned out the act of terror weeks ahead "in the name of ISIS," according to officials, CNN reports . This lead to some commenters' offensive remarks against Islam as a whole. Gigi Hadid, who is Muslim, added her voice to those fighting Islamophobia when she clapped back at someone on Twitter who criticized women in New York for wearing hijabs near the crime scene today. "Muslims are out in full force at the scene of the NYC #ISIS attack today rubbing it in everyone's face. Aimlessly walking around in hijabs," journalist Laura Loomer said in an infuriating tweet . "You'd think they'd have the decency to not walk around in hijabs @ cross street of the attack. But they don't. I bet they're loving this." Hadid responded: "Laura, I hate to give you the attention, but I need to tell you- You're a f**king moron." Laura, I hate to give you the attention, but I need to tell you- You're a f**king moron. https://t.co/fCezijj2Ao — Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) November 1, 2017 Gigi and her sister Bella have been vocal about their faith, especially in the wake of Trump's immigration ban earlier this year (which they protested in New York in January). Their father, Mohammed Hadid, came to the U.S. as a refugee from Palestine when he was a child. "He was always religious, and he always prayed with us," Bella said of their dad . "I am proud to be a Muslim."

Sid Malhotra stealing Alia's beauty products is every boyfriend ever

Sid Malhotra stealing Alia's beauty products is every boyfriend ever Shah Rukh Khan's birthday is the ultimate relationship rejuvenator By Elle Team November 3, 2017 SHARE Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt are the Justin Bieber-Selena Gomez of our times. The couple first got together after starring in their debut film, Student Of The Year , before briefly breaking up. Alia even discussed dealing with her break-up in an exclusive interview with ELLE, saying, “I hate it when people tell you to try and distract yourself. That’s very lame. It is temporary. Nobody’s found a cure for heartbreak. If they had, the world would be a much happier place.” Then in September, Sidharth went on record with Neha Dhupia to say that he "was very much single." Things seemed to change once Diwali rolled around, with the couple being spotted together at multiple Bollywood parties, their attempts to avoid the paparazzi were laughably feeble. And by the time Shah Rukh Khan's birthday rolled around on November 2, Sid and Alia were back to dropping major clues that they're officially off the market and happily in love. Exhibit A Sid and Alia share a ride back to Mumbai together after attending Shah Rukh Khan's birthday. That's a four hour car ride along a picturesque coast, for those not familiar with the terrain. Exhibit B Sid steals his girlfriend's face mist to hydrate his skin before the long ride. Sharing/borrowing skincare products = standard long-term couple behaviour. Exhibit C A post shared by Sidharth Malhotra (@s1dofficial) on Nov 1, 2017 at 3:27am PDT Alia is wearing a striped T-shirt that's identical to the one Sid wore on his chopper ride in. You may proceed to draw your own conclusions here.

How to get over a break-up without falling into a dark pit of despair

How to get over a break-up without falling into a dark pit of despair You may now crawl out of your fetal position By Gigi Engle November 3, 2017 SHARE Break-ups feel like a sudden death. One moment you go from being blissfully happy, to losing both a partner and a friend—seemingly in the blink of an eye. How do you avoid becoming cynical after you've finally opened your heart up to love, only to have it blow up in your face? Here are five (admittedly hard AF) steps to help you move on. Give yourself permission to grieve Cry as much and as often as you feel you need to. Scream into a pillow. Wallow in your sadness if you need to. We put far too much pressure on ourselves to be okay right after a break-up. This may feel like the conventionally strong thing to do, but you may be setting yourself back. Kristie Overstreet , MD, psychotherapist and clinical sexologist, says that in order to heal, we need to treat ourselves with kindness. "Be gentle with yourself by giving yourself permission to be in the space of grief and sadness. Don't waste your emotional energy by telling yourself that you shouldn't feel this way or that you should just get over it." Instead of hurrying off to party or hooking up with the next person you see, take some time for self-love and self-care, as cliche as that may sound. Regain your sense of self—or better, become the best version of yourself—by finding what gives you joy and pursuing those things. "[This experience] is valid, real, and horrible at this time in your life, but you know that it will pass," Overstreet adds. Accept that people change and that's okay When you're going through a terrible break-up it's easier to be angry than it is to see the bigger picture. We hide in our feelings of rage instead of accepting that people grow and change. It's frustrating to find that someone you love has not evolved in the same ways you have, but the first step in moving on from a breakup is accepting that we have only a modicum of control over the future. "It's important to understand that even healthy relationships can end," says Nikki Goldstein , MD, sexologist and relationships expert. "We are not all meant to be with each other and it might just come down to different interests in life and not enough of a connection." Honour what you had If it was a healthy relationship, appreciate it for what it was. "Often people want to try and put a person down or say the relationship was rubbish to justify the ending," says Goldstein. Choose to focus on the positive lessons you glean from heartbreak instead of dwelling on the terrible parts. A break-up will show you how resilient you are and remind you that you can truly survive anything. Honouring what you had also means not disrespecting the other person intentionally. You might need to create distance between yourself and your ex (for good reason), but going the extra step during a break-up means not going out of your way to hurt their feelings after part ways. After all, the best revenge is to just go on living your fabulous, successful life. Write yourself a letter Don't hesitate to write down everything you are feeling during this time. Will you cry through the whole thing? Probably. But it will be a cathartic experience to put it down on paper and let it go. Overstreet suggests that you also write yourself a note to remind yourself of your blessings, how amazing you are (seriously, truly, don't forget it), and every good thing you have in store. "Writing this letter to self will help you process what you are currently experiencing and give the opportunity to identify positives in the future," she says. Remember that you are a badass queen Forgive yourself. There is no shame in a break-up, even if you weren't the one doing the breaking up. When you're trying to be an empowered woman, rejection is the one thing that can knock you down off your pedestal. It's a kick in the stomach, but don't let it break you. Surround yourself with the people who love you instead of giving in to the urge to self-isolate. We're conditioned to believe that we are only truly worthy if we have a romantic partner. And it's bullshit. You are a magical, fantastic, incredible person all by yourself. A relationship worthy of you, goddess, will be one you don't have to question or worry about.

3 surprising behaviours that are scientifically contagious

3 surprising behaviours that are scientifically contagious Who you surround yourself with has an even bigger impact than you might realize By Elle Team November 3, 2017 SHARE You're probably well aware that seeing another person yawn or laugh uncontrollably will set you off to do the same. But there are other more surprising behaviours that have been scientifically found to be contagious, too: 1. Rudeness (particularly at work) According to research by Trevor Foulk , it takes no more than a single episode of low-intensity negative behaviour to be transferred to those around us. He likens rudeness to the common cold, in how easy it is to 'catch'. The 'contagion' (rudeness) appears to be unaffected by the relationship between the involved individuals (boss and employee, mother and child, etc), providing stronger evidence that this is an unconscious adoption of anger and hostility rather than a type of mimicking. There's not much research to clarify why this is more prevalent in work situations, but common sense would suggest it's to do with the high-stress environment and the amount of time you spend in close proximity to co-workers. Foulk also found that previous exposure to rude behaviour makes you more sensitive to it in the future, making you more likely to interpret a situation as rude. Worryingly, further studies showed that the contagious effect of just one rude interaction could last up to an entire week , showing just how important it is to be pleasant to your co-workers. 2. Risk-taking John O'Doherty, Professor of Psychology at Caltech found that people are more likely to make a financial gamble after witnessing a peer doing it first. Shinsuke Suzuki, co-author of the paper said: "Both the behavioural and neural responses to taking risks can be changed through passively observing the behaviour of others" Also, Aislin Mushquash and her team found that couples influence each other's drinking habits so much that you can actually predict one partner's binge drinking based on the other's. Another study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research Journal found that when placed in a social setting, a person's decision on whether to drink alcohol or not was greatly influenced by what their friends drink. 3. Eating habits There's good and bad news with this one; both healthy and unhealthy eating habits can be passed on to our friends and family . One study found that when looking at over 12,000 people, when a friend becomes obese (as per their BMI), you're 57% more likely to become obese yourself . This increased risk can also be seen to three degrees of separation, meaning you are 10% more likely to become obese if a friend of a friend of a friend is (really!). And if your spouse is obese, it raises your chances by 27%. This doesn't just apply to the unhealthy, though. When investigating the effectiveness of a weight loss program on 357 overweight patients with Type 2 diabetes, spouses were seen to lose weight at the same rate of the participants. So for anyone looking to change their lifestyle, surround yourself with fit, healthy people and you might start adopting their behaviours. The main takeaway? Pick your friends wisely.

Why you need to start investing more into your sex life

Why you need to start investing more into your sex life An orgasm a day, keeps the doctor away By Elle Team November 3, 2017 SHARE Aside from the fact that it's a good time, sex may be one of those activities that is holistic in its benefits for your body and mind. We're not just talking about going through the motions and calling it a day, but actually fully enjoying and being satisfied in your sexual encounters. Whether with a partner or partners, sex needs to be gratifying and make you feel good about yourself for you to get the most benefits out of it. And we're not just talking about the big O here. When you're not stressing about defining the relationship with your partner, or how you look with your clothes off and just enjoying the experience, sex can be as beneficial as a workout or therapy session. Like any practice that benefits you, sex requires time and effort. Fully immerse yourself in the experience to reap its benefits. So go ahead, put in that effort into your sex life because trust us, intercourse karma will have you feeling glad you did. 7 reasons sex is good for your body and mind: You get smarter Your immune system gets a boost Your skin glows and it’s a natural lip plumper It’ll make you feel and look young Finally, you can catch up on some shuteye. Sex can enhance your boobs De-stress This isn’t an 'experience makes you wiser' situation. No, having more sex literally and scientifically makes you smarter. Researchers in Maryland and South Korea found that sexual activity can lead to the production of new neurons. Sure the research was conducted on rodents, but the findings can be extrapolate to all mammals. As a result, it was found that sexual interactions counteract the memory-robbing effects of chronic stress and so improves cognitive and hippocampal functions. Throw away those multi-vitamins (but maybe swap them for contraception?) because increased sexual activity boosts the body's immune system . In women, the changes in immunity seem to lean towards making it easier to get pregnant. The female body starts learning to defend itself against foreign invaders but shifts this awareness when it comes to foreign bodies such as sperm or a foetus. This shift in immunity was not observed in abstinent women. Forget that Instagram filter, throw away that highlighter. Sure you’re eating right but that post-sex glow is really what takes your skin care routine to the next level. Having regular sex increases your heart rate and blood circulation, pumping oxygen to your skin making it brighter. It also helps eliminate toxins and can sometimes give you plumper lips. Sure you may not be at it like a teenager anymore but having sex regularly will make you feel like one. It can also make you look seven years younger according to science. Intercourse causes the release of growth hormones, which helps skin elasticity . Sexual satisfaction is important in this case, one should be in a healthy place and not anxious about sex to fully reap the benefits. Ditch the chamomile tea and sleeping pills; getting laid could help you get better sleep. Aside from the fact that all that physical ativity in close proximity to your bed will tire you out before bed time, when you orgasm, your body releases a cocktail of hormones that promote good sleep. Serotonin and norepinephrine , which are released during a climax, help the body through REM and deep non-REM sleep cycles. Push up bra uncomfortable? Substitute with sex. According to Dr Michael Roizen, breasts can swell up to 25% in size during sex. That's not all, massaging your breasts is said to increase blood flow to the area and boost your cup size. Give your fidget spinner a break and start fidgeting with your partner. A good dose of sex may be the best stress busting medicine out there. During an orgasm, large doses of oxytocin are released which can keep cortisol, your stress hormone, in check. Increased cortisol also is a major cause for weight gain. So having that orgasm seems to be a two-for one offer. Win, win You get smarter This isn’t an 'experience makes you wiser' situation.
