Karan Johar’s weight loss journey: How he lost 17kg in 4 months

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Image: Instagram.com Keeping up with Karan Johar’s lifestyle is no easy feat. Father to two beautiful babies, he’s constantly working and traveling, and in spite of an erratic lifestyle, is looking fabulously fit these days. It’s got a lot to do with his discipline, dedication to staying healthy and fit and a strict workout and diet regimen designed by his weight loss trainer, fitness consultant Kunal Gir. It was Johar’s good friend Ranbir Kapoor who suggested his personal trainer Gir, when the producer expressed how impressed he was with Kapoor’s transformation for the Sanjay Dutt biopic. And that’s how Johar’s own personal transformation began. Gir shares a leaf out of Johar’s fitness diary—here’s how to lose weight like one of Bollywood’s favourite personalities. Karan Johar’s workout for weight loss “We alternate between weight training and water workout four times a week,” says Gir about Johar’s exercise routine. “When we first met, Karan told me he enjoyed swimming, so I’ve tried to incorporate a high intensity cardio session in the water as a substitute to regular cardio—and it’s a lot more intense.” Karan Johar’s weight loss diet For Johar, his diet is very important and he tries to stick to a no-sugar, no-direct-carbs diet—with lots of organic vegetables and proteins from meats and eggs, to ensure his weight loss plan stays on track. “He eats every three hours. He only eats food cooked in macadamia nut oil, and his fibre intake has increased since his body now responds to higher amounts of fibre,” says Gir. And the eggs he consumes aren’t any ordinary eggs. They have to be high in omega 3, which means that the chicken has to follow a diet too, a healthy one, which includes consumption of flax seeds. Gir is pleased that despite his lifestyle and travel schedule, Johar is very strict with his diet and ensures he works out for at least three if not four days a week. “A lot of people lose muscle mass instead of burning fat and that makes them weak. But Karan’s dedication to exercising and a good, healthy diet has ensured he’s not lost any muscle mass but burned mostly fat.” He’s continuing to be regular with his workouts, and Gir continues to help him in this transformational journey. And the fact that he’s lost 11 inches off of his waist, and 17kg in roughly four months, is enough visible proof. In fact, Gir even posted a picture with Johar on his Instagram account in May, when they started on his weight loss journey, and it’s clear how far Johar has come. A post shared by Kunal Gir (@kunalgir) on May 7, 2017 at 5:44am PDT Besides Johar and Kapoor, Gir also trained Rana Daggubati for his role in the box-office hit Baahubali .

Anushka Sharma in Raw Mango Image: Instagram.com/alliaalrufai It’s hard to imagine your best friend’s wedding without a calendar full of bridesmaid duties, choreography sessions and endless shopping trips. Planning is crucial before the wedding madness begins to avoid last minute fails. To make the process easier, take help from our guide (with a little inspiration from Bollywood celebrities who do it best). Saris and twirl-worthy lehengas are a popular choice during the wedding season. For the mehandi event, swap your basic lehenga skirt in favour of dhotis and palazzo pants. Mira Rajput Kapoor’s dhoti-cape set and Jacqueline Fernandez’s look featuring basic palazzo pants styled with a draped dupatta and embroidered jacket, are both great options. While you will be on your toes looking after your friend’s needs and having a good time at the wedding, make sure your outfits stand the test of time to help you survive the days and nights effortlessly. Long skirts can be your best friend for the pre-wedding ceremonies. Parineeti Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Aditi Rao Hydari show you how it’s done. Not a fan of heavy weaves and long trailing sari pallus? Try something like Priyanka Chopra’s pastel anarkali and Khushi Kapoor’s minimalistic lehenga set. For the big wedding event, take cues from Alia Bhatt’s green brocade look. If you’re one for the drama, choose an embroidered weave with an extended trail like Deepika Padukone’s, and let your outfit do the talking. For a formal cocktail event, a night of drunken revelry or the reception, make sure to keep in sync with the dress code. You can go down the traditional way, or even try a crop top and skirt duo. Don’t be afraid to play with proportions. Scroll through our celebrity gallery for inspiration and narrow down on your looks for your best friend’s big day. Khadi, sales up 89 per cent in first half of this fiscal

Khadi sale have increased over 89 per cent to Rs 814 crore from April to September 2017, compared to Rs 430 crores a year ago. Sales boom was visible during Diwali too, when luxury brands, jewellers and auto companies were complaining about missing foot falls. Modi has emerged as a brand ambassador of sorts, helping khadi record impressive sales growth over the last few years. Combined sales of khadi and village industries will top Rs 50,000 crore during the current financial year.New initiates such as the launch of gift coupons and tie-ups with large chains as well as institutional sales have also helped. Max Fashion to expand retail, aims to be a Rs 5,000-crore brand

Max Fashion, which is owned by Dubai-based $9 billion Landmark Group is growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 32 per cent year on year and targeting achieving Rs 5,000 crore revenue in three years. It’s aiming to add 60 more stores to take the total store count to 250 by end of the financial year 2017-2018 including Tier II cities. The company also operates the multi-brand retail store chain Lifestyle, which deals in fashion products of higher prices. Asked how he keeps the two brands separate, Vasanth Kumar, Executive Director, Lifestyle International, Max Retail Division stated, Lifestyle is in the premium segment with 75 per cent other brands whereas Max is in the value fashion segment with 96 per cent private labels. Max price points are 35-40 per cent below Lifestyle. This retailer is expecting this festive season to rake in 20 per cent more sales compared to last year. As Jiten Mahendra, Vice-President, Marketing, Max Fashion, points out the 45-day festive season between Durga Puja and Diwali would contribute about 15 per cent to the annual sales. He explains they are entering the second phase of festive season and hopeful to achieve growth targets. To count the challenges faced by the category, Mahendra points out three major things making sure that international fashion is brought in India and sticking to the core values of fashion and staying true to the price. The brand doesn’t aim to launch any premium segment brand or sub-brand. GST, which posed a huge challenge to many categories and brands, was taken positively by the retailer. Kumar feels GST will create a level playing field for organised players. It shall help increase overall consumption for value fashion. Demonetisation in November last year had minimum impact on the brand as it operates in the value fashion category.

5 pioneers who are using innovative sustainable fabrics

5 pioneers who are using innovative sustainable fabrics From recycled plastic to stinging nettle By Shweta Gandhi November 6, 2017 SHARE The urgent environmental challenges that the world is facing is prompting designers and brands alike to reinvent their strategies and think out of the box. According to a report published by Accenture and H&M Foundation, two of the five megatrends that are shaping the future of sustainable fashion are innovative recycling and nature-inspired materials. Whether it is recovering value out of waste materials or using more efficient ways of decomposing fabric, this is a pivotal area that has all our attention. We‘re highlighting five pioneers who are pushing the boundaries of eco-innovation. 1. Adidas Originals x Parley Adidas Originals, in collaboration with an environmental initiative Parley for the Oceans, recently released an eco-conscious sneaker 'EQT Support ADV CK'. The sneaker has been made using plastic that has been intercepted on the beaches of the Maldives and near-by coastal communities before it reaches the ocean. Not only does this preserve the environment, but it also protects the aquatic life from ingesting plastic debris. The EQT Support ADV CK sneakers. 2. Madhu Jain Craft revivalist and textile conservationist Madhu Jain — nicknamed as the first lady of Ikat — recently introduced the world's first bamboo silk ikat. A result of 14 years of extensive research, this fabric supposedly has anti-bacterial properties and natural UV protection. And the fact that India is the second largest producer of bamboo only makes it easier. "Bamboo as a fabric is fantastic, it's the poor man's linen. Also, the textile is biodegradable, eco-friendly, non-toxic and pocket-friendly. I love the fact that this new textile does not eat into the earth's meagre resources," Madhu was quoted saying . 3. Auria This London-based swimwear brand uses recycled fabrics made from Econyl, a regenerated nylon fiber, made from discarded fishing nets and other nylon waste. She works with women artisans in Nepal who knit and spin the Himalayan Giant Nettle (also called 'Allo'). The finest silks, cashmere, nettle and organic cotton have been hand painted to create this gown. 5. Newlife Yarns This yarn uses 100% post consumer plastic bottles that are sourced, processed and spun to create recycled fabric that is supplied to brands and designers alike that encompasses fashion, sportswear and even home furnishings. Dream job alert: Gucci's consulting millennial advisors to tell them what’s cool

Dream job alert: Gucci's consulting millennial advisors to tell them what’s cool We want in. By Natasha Harding November 7, 2017 SHARE Are you fashionable, under the age of 30 and opinionated as hell? If so, then have we got the job for you. At WWD’s Apparel & Retail CEO Summit in New York last week Gucci’s chief executive, Marco Bizzarri, revealed that the fashion label has created a ‘shadow committee’ of millennial advisors. Their purpose? To direct the company’s top dogs (read: execs) on what’s lit and what’s not. Naturally, we want in. RELATED VIDEO: GUCCI'S SPRING/SUMMER '17 RUNWAY SHOW AT MILAN FASHION WEEK IS PURE HEAVEN “It is a committee that is structured with people below the age of 30,” Bizzarri explains. “The task is either discussing the same topics that we discuss in the normal meeting with executives, or giving me ideas on different processes.” The committee forms part of the brand’s broader ‘bottom-up’ approach to management, where 'the youth's are thought to be able to teach the older staff members a thing or two. For those of you still reading but are over the age of 30, there’s still a chance for you to shower important people with your opinions. Bizzarri adds that Gucci are also hosting lunches for people aged under 35 where, “I ask them to give me three ideas of what we should do to improve the life at Gucci.” The only question is, are they hiring? If so, I’d like to be paid in new season Guch, thanks.

Apparently This Is Why The Weeknd Broke Up With Selena Gomez

Apparently This Is Why The Weeknd Broke Up With Selena Gomez Nice. By Mahalia Chang November 7, 2017 SHARE According to new reports, physical distance and a fizzled romance may have been the culprits behind the recent split of The Weeknd and Selena Gomez. The reports allege that Gomez and The Weeknd—whose real name is Abel Tesfaye—split a couple of weeks ago, and that the decision was Tesfaye’s. TMZ writes that the 10-month relationship had been slowly losing steam for a few months due to conflicting schedules and distance before the rapper ended things by phone. “They had rarely seen each other because of his touring schedule and her shooting schedule. They started talking less frequently on the phone,” the report read. (A harsh detail notes that Tesfaye “felt unfairly tied down in a relationship that had lost its passion”. Ouch.) In any case, Gomez’s recently rekindled interest in her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber—who she was spotted dining, riding bikes and hanging out with twice in the past two days—was apparently not a factor in their breakup. “Justin's apparent reignited relationship with Selena didn't start until after she and The Weeknd went their separate ways,” the report reads. Since the news of the breakup broke, Tesfaye has been spotted cosying up to a girl at a recent show, so it doesn’t look like there are too many hard feelings about the split.

Hey, sorry to neg you out, but is your hair making you look older?

Hey, sorry to neg you out, but is your hair making you look older? Jen Atkin shares her best anti-ageing hair tips. By Erin Cook November 7, 2017 SHARE We hate to bring up the double-barrelled ‘a’ word again—you know the one… starts with ‘anti’ ends with ‘ageing’—but as anyone who’s sprouted a grey hair can attest, our hair can change quite dramatically as we grow older. Don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom—there are plenty of tips and tricks you can employ to stop hair from showing the signs of ageing . Or, you know, there’s always the option of shaving your head altogether… If anyone knows the secret to youthful hair, it’s celebrity hairstylist/founder of Ouai Haircare/friend of the Kardashians, Jen Atkin . At last count, Atkin has over 2.1 MILLION followers on Instagram and has a client book that reads like the guest list of the Met Gala: Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Bella Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, the list goes on… So, it’s an understatement to say she’s an expert in all things hair care. ouai into my new DOES HAIR CHANGE AS WE GET OLDER, OR IS IT ALL IN OUR HEADS? “Hair can start to lose its shine, become brittle and start to thin out as we get older.” IS OLDER HAIR MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE? “Not always, but older hair can certainly be more susceptible to damage if you're not properly caring for it. One tip for any hair type I suggest is sleeping on a SLIP silk pillowcase to keep the hair in the best possible condition and doing a weekly treatment.” SO, AH, HOW DO WE *STOP* OUR HAIR FROM AGEING? “I would definitely recommend the OUAI supplements, especially Dry & Thin. The dry hair supplements contain silica which is great for achieving smooth and silky strands, vitamin E, and omega 3's to help build strong strands. The thin hair formula includes ashwagandha extract which is great at reducing stress levels (a major contributor to hair loss), and niacin to help prevent blockage of cholesterol at the pores.” This just in: THIN supplements SOLD OUT yesterday on the 1st day of our friends & family sale! ARE THERE ANY HAIRSTYLES THAT ARE AUTOMATICALLY AGING? “I don't think there's any one style that's automatically aging. Different situations call for different styles and sometimes what's old can become new again! Paired with the right outfit or accessories, classics can become today's best looks and often times styles that are huge today can be gone tomorrow!”

A fashion editor’s guide to the staycation Instagram checklist A guideline, if you will. By Claudia Jukic November 7, 2017 SHARE Ah, the humble Instagram vacation brag. We all do it. How long does it take for your new skincare product to actually work?

How long does it take for your new skincare product to actually work?

How long does it take for your new skincare product to actually work? Because patience is a virtue By Chloe Metzger Call it a millennial thing — or a Chloe thing, according to my grandma Barb — but I'm impatient as f—k when it comes to trying new skincare products (and when it comes to doing pretty much anything in life ever). Because if I don't see my zits disappear by the time I wake up, or watch my fine lines and dark spots and itty-bitty bumps fade into oblivion after three hours, then I pretty much lose faith in that product ever working, which I realise is ridiculous. And though I know it's almost impossible for skincare products to transform your skin right away, I still need some sort of timeline — some end goal for me to hold onto when my skin is freaking out or looking, well, blah. And based on the number of texts I get per week asking me these same questions, I'm not alone. So I went out and got answers, and, spoil alert, nothing is a magic bullet. CLEANSERS "You should notice a difference right away, as in whether it's right or wrong for your skin," says Mona Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor at Yale. "If your skin feels immediately dry, your cleanser is too harsh for you, whereas a good, suitable cleanser should leave your skin immediately softer and smoother, since it's nourishing your barrier versus destroying it." As for acne face washes, like anything spiked with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, "you should see improvement in your current blemishes within a week or two, with full, final results after three months," says Dr. Gohara, who notes that cleansers don't actually sit on your skin long enough for them to really infiltrate your pores, so it can take a bit longer to see results. ACNE TREATMENTS Annoyingly, this one is super gray and murky, because there are so many different types of acne and acne treatments. BUT, if we're talking all-over acne treatments, like a toner or a moisturiser spiked with salicylic acid (which is lipophilic, meaning "it's fat-loving, so it works to break down the oils in your pores") or benzoyl peroxide ("it destroys acne-causing bacteria on the skin"), you should start seeing a decrease in blackheads and whiteheads during the first two weeks. "You might purge a bit at first after the first or second week, meaning your breakouts could get a bit worse before they level off, but you should notice a significant improvement overall by six weeks," says Dr. Gohara, who uses this mark to assess whether or not the product is helping her patients. "And if I'm not seeing a total reduction on a patient's skin after three months, I'll likely move on to a different product and try something else," she says, adding that "it takes about 28 days for your skin cells to turn over, so by that point, you've given your face three cycles to purge and adjust, meaning you should notice a difference." As for spot treatments, like a dollop of benzoyl peroxide on your zit at night, "you could see a huge reduction in size by the time you wake up," says Dr. Gohara. "Spot treatments are highly concentrated and, if it's benzoyl peroxide-based, works on both an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial level to destroy that zit." Of course, you wouldn't want to slather it over a large area, since "they'll literally destroy your skin barrier," says Dr. Gohara, but on just one spot, "they can be highly effective after just a few nights." DARK SPOT TREATMENTS We're talkin' acne scars, sun spots, and weird hyperpigmentation dots that seem to never go away. And unfortunately, "this treatment is a marathon, not a sprint," says Dr. Gohara, noting that because there are so many factors that can make marks and spots worse, like hormones, sun exposure, sensitive skin, etc, "treating discoloration on your face is a maintenance thing for life." So, you know, don't expect overnight results. If you're using hydroquinone, which decreases your melanin production, Dr. Gohara has her patients use for two months on, then two months off, since it can be so irritating, though you should start to see some subtle lightening after two weeks. But if it's an antioxidant, like vitamin C, which eats up damage-causing free radicals, you'll have a bit of a slower path, with your spots getting better "after two months," she says. "But it's one of my favorite spot faders, since it's so effective and pretty well tolerated by most skin types." RETINOLS Alright, this is the big one that everyone wants to know about: When, exactly, will you look like your 16-year-old self again? (If, you know, that's what you're going for — we say age however the hell you want to age, whether that means slathering potions on your skin or lighting the pyre of anti-aging campaigns). "You'll notice an overall improvement in the way your skin looks within four-to-six weeks, especially if you're using retinoids for acne" says Dr. Gohara. "There's a ton of growing pains with retinols at first, because there may be a process of initial irritation and flaking, but after that, you'll very quickly notice a slight reduction in fine lines, a more evened-out skin tone, faded discoloration, fewer breakouts, and smoother skin." As for wrinkles? "It's going take much longer for the collagen production in your skin to increase, and you'll never notice its biggest side effect, which is a decrease in collagen breakdown — AKA the actual anti-aging effects that happen under your skin," says Dr. Gohara. "You'll never get complete reversal of all wrinkles and aging, but you'll see your fine lines fill out, and your deep wrinkles soften after just four-to-six months of consistent use."

The untold story behind Queen Elizabeth's engagement ring

The untold story behind Queen Elizabeth's engagement ring Diamonds last forever, as do the tales behind them By Katie Robinson The Queen has plenty of jewels at her disposal, but there's one piece of jewelry that she rarely takes off: her three-carat round diamond engagement ring. What's more beautiful than the ring itself, however, is the story behind it. The diamonds — a center stone flanked by 10 smaller pave diamonds — were originally part of a tiara owned by Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, who was Queen Victoria's great-granddaughter. In 1946, knowing that her son was planning to propose, Philip's mother gifted him the tiara she was given on her wedding day so it could be dismantled and used to create a ring fit for a Queen. The Prince worked with London jeweler Philip Antrobus Ltd. to design it himself, and even went one step further: he selected additional stones from the tiara and turned them into a wide diamond bracelet for the Queen, which he gave to her as a wedding gift. Princess Alice of Battenberg The diamonds themselves actually date back to the very end of Romanov dynasty . His mother had been given the tiara on her wedding day by Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra of Russia, the last rulers of the Russian Empire and to whom she was distantly related. Now, pieces of it lie on the ring finger of the British monarch. We know diamonds last forever, but it seems they may help marriages last forever too.
