5 cheap kitchen essentials that are perfect superfood substitutes

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Image: Shutterstock There is no real way to define what qualifies as a superfood—simply put, a superfood is one that is power packed with vitamins or minerals. In recent times, the market has been constantly flooded with a new ‘superfood’ every few months, with claims of how the nutrients in it can better your fitness of health quotient. However, many of these superfoods are expensive and not everyone can continue to include them in their daily food plan in the long term. Here are a few alternatives to expensive superfoods that don’t need you to break the bank. In fact, including these can help with not just your weight loss, but boost your nutrient intake as well. 1 /5 Turmeric Long before turmeric lattes became famous in the West, Indians have been incorporating the superfood in our daily lives in the form of food and medication for centuries. Have a small cut or bruise? Apply turmeric for its antiseptic properties. Feel a cold coming on? Add it to some hot milk and boost your immunity. Turmeric is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can boost the antioxidant levels in your body. Fenugreek Fenugreek or methi leaves are high in fibre and low on calories. They’re a great source of iron and other minerals like zinc, selenium and copper, which make them a power-packed superfood. They can be easily incorporated in our daily diet as a serving of vegetables or in your parathas. Fenugreek seeds are also known to have cholesterol and blood-sugar-lowering properties, being an excellent source of fibre. In India, the leaves and seeds are also recommended in a woman’s diet post-delivery as they aid recovery and help with breastfeeding. Oats Oats contain vitamins and minerals and are a wonderfully high fibre breakfast choice. This cereal contains both soluble and insoluble fibres, which help to lower cholesterol and control your sugar level. Starting your day with an oats-based breakfast may even help with weight loss. They keep you full and balance out your body’s sugar levels through the day, so when your cravings are cut down you are in more control of the food you consume and your portion sizes; this can even translate into gradual weight loss. Tomato Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin A (carotene) which does wonders for your skin and eyesight. It is also a good source of the immunity-building vitamin C. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer. While most of us classify a food as a superfood only if it is difficult to find and expensive apart from its nutrient value, this humble fruit can count as a superfood—it’s packed with powerful nutrients and can be used in several recipes. Be it soup, sandwiches, salads, curries, gravies, salsa to even alcoholic beverages, it can lend its nutrients very easily to any of these dishes. Yellow tea Not a big fan of green tea? Make yourself this yellow tea concoction every morning. Boil together water, a pinch of turmeric, a piece of cinnamon and 1-2 pods of cardamom. Filter and drink this daily for a metabolism boost. The turmeric will increase immunity and the cinnamon will help level your blood sugar and prevent hunger pangs. #BeautyGoals: Twinkle Khanna debuts a dramatic new haircut on Instagram

Yami Gautam Image: Instagram.com/yamigautam Last week, Twinkle Khanna surprised her fans with a completely new look: the author/producer took to the scissors for a shorter do after 20 years of wearing her hair in her long, luscious waves. Among the other celebrity beauty Instagrams, Priyanka Chopra definitely took the prize. Her lived-in hair, pink eyeshadow and a matching lipstick came together for a refreshing look on the actor. Kajol too, was spotted twinning with Chopra’s matching lip and eye makeup look—however, she picked earthy hues instead. Radhika Apte had her hair up in a rather unusual bun courtesy Elton Fernandez; a messy top knot and multiple braids moving upwards. Kriti Sanon wore winged eyeliner and a half ponytail for a classic look. Shilpa Shetty Kundra too, went the classy way with a side-parted updo with floral embellishments, tight-lined eyes and a red tinted lip. Yami Gautam joined Twinkle Khanna with a fresh haircut herself. Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty picked looks featuring soft eyeshadow last week—the former with a nude lip and the latter with a bright pink. Among those who took the classic route, Athiya Shetty sported clean skin and sleek, straight hair, Esha Gupta wore the winning winged eyeliner and nude lipstick combination and Bipasha Basu went back to her trusted red lip and soft waves. Over in the US, Lucy Hale wore a stunning matte crimson lip (as did Freida Pinto) coupled with a wavy bob and Margot Robbie aced nude makeup and had her lob in waves too. Flip through the gallery above for all the best celebrity beauty Instagrams from last week.

Victoria’s Secret: 5 designer collaborations that made magic on the runway

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Image: Getty Behind every Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a team of creatives designing a dizzying array of looks for the catwalk. Some, like costumers Jeff Fender, Todd Thomas and Marian Hose, are regular collaborators whose elaborate creations have come to define the look and feel of the show. Each year, the lingerie brand enlists new designers to offer their take on the Victoria’s Secret look. Sky-high heels are one of the most important items in a VS model’s arsenal, and over the years the likes of Giuseppe Zanotti and Brian Atwood have created bespoke footwear for the show. But these collaborations are not just with established names: the Pink segment of the show is often used a space for new and offbeat designers, giving the show just a bit of edge. Here, we look back at five of the lingerie brand’s most successful designer link-ups to date. 1 /5 Lindsay Degan (2013) A Brooklyn-based knitwear designer might not sound like a shoo-in for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but the lingerie brand’s 2013 collaboration with Lindsay Degan is one of the most memorable. The artist-turned-designer’s offbeat and fun approach turned out to be a natural fit, and the wild acid bright knitwear that Degan created for the show’s Pink section managed to look good on the catwalk and stayed true to the designer’s inimitable aesthetic. “It changed how the industry viewed my brand,” Degan tells Vogue . “Before the show my line was more of a small art practice—the show added credibility.” Image: Getty Zana Bayne (2013) The self-taught leather-worker had already made a name for herself dressing celebrities including Madonna and Lady Gaga by the time Victoria’s Secret came knocking. Bayne, who describes her luxury leather accessories as “post-fetish”, added some oh-la-la to the Parisian Nights segment with a custom version of her collar harness. Image: Getty Nasir Mazhar (2014) Another local designer recruited to work on the 2014 London show, Nasir Mazhar brought his raw energy and East End homeboy aesthetic to the catwalk for the University of Pink segment, which focused on a casual athleisure style. Translated to the Victoria’s Secret catwalk, this meant logo-heavy cropped nylon puffers, sporty crop tops, pink towelling tracksuits and a dose of London cool. Image: Getty Nicholas Kirkwood and Sophia Webster (2014) Victoria’s Secret enlisted two of Britain’s top footwear designers for the London show, and the Cordwainers alumni did not disappoint. Kirkwood and Webster took their individual signature silhouettes and turned the volume right up. Kirkwood created gold Swarovski-encrusted caged sandals and matching hand-embroidered knee-high boots, while Webster brought her bold and graphic style to the show with zig-zag cutouts and butterfly wing cutwork. The results were distinctive, whimsical and daring. Image: Getty Brian Atwood (2016) The designer has teamed with Victoria’s Secret for the past two consecutive years, bringing his own brand of extravagant showstoppers to the catwalk. One of Atwood’s most memorable creations for the VS squad is surely the laced boots worn by Gigi Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio for the Dark Angel segment in the 2016 show. More lace than boot, they made a strong and sophisticated statement. Image: Getty

Virat Kohli on collaborating with Puma for his new line, One8

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Next Between making news with his victories on the pitch and holidaying with Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli has been working on launching his very own fashion label. On November 9, the cricketer announced the launch of One8 (the name is inspired by his jersey number, 18), created in collaboration with Puma, at Select City Walk, Delhi. The brand features a collection of active wear separates ranging from sweatshirts to logo tees. At the launch event, the cricketer let us in on his experience. “It is very exciting for me,” said Kohli. “The main aim of doing an athleisure line is to bring style into sports, so that people can feel comfortable in fashionable clothes,” he revealed. The line draws from Kohli’s personal sense of style—think comfortable jackets, relaxed T-shirts and trousers in easy fabrics—with a palette of black, grey, white and olive. We spoke to him on what went into the making of One8. On the journey of creating: “It’s a very special feeling. Six months ago I had my very first interaction with Puma and now the line is ready. All the things that were decided back then have come alive.” On the campaign: “The tag line for our collaboration is “Come Out and Play”. The idea is to get people to be physically active. I wanted to create the kind of clothes that are fashionable and at the same time make it easy for people to take part in physical activities.” On his personal style: “People have to force me to wear formal clothes, that’s how I dress up. I love wearing casual, comfortable clothes. I don’t like anything that’s flashy. When we started this process, the Puma team just opened my suitcase and saw what kind of clothes that were there in my bag. They took inspiration from there and incorporated those colours (I was very particular about that) and style.” On the one thing he could wear his entire life: “It will have to be a pair of grey track pants that are super comfortable, a matching grey T-shirt and white sneakers. Grey on grey with white is my go-to look.” On his favourite pieces from the collection: “The first one is this comfortable black T-shirt that says “Unapologetically Me”. I love it because it exactly describes the person I am. I don’t like body-hugging clothes and this one is very loose and comfortable. Then the second one is plain black high-low T-shirt and also the olive-green tank top because it’s my favourite colour and you can wear it under a jacket too.” One the three things he can never leave home without: “My phone, my sunglasses, and music is very important for me so my headphones and my ear plugs.” The price for the collection ranges from Rs 1,499 to Rs 4,000. Available at Puma stores nationwide, and online on In.puma.com and Myntra.com

10 Bollywood star kids whose careers we're going to be watching

Ananya Pandey, Suhana Khan and Shanaya Kapoor Aarav Bhatia Ahaan Panday is the son of Chikki and Deanne Panday, making him the nephew of Chunky Pandey. One look at his Instagram profile proves that Ahaan has Bollywood in his blood. He keeps his 133K followers entertained with Bollywood lip syncs and high octane dance moves, not unlike Ranveer Singh. His inner circle includes Shah Rukh's son while cousin Ananya Pandey, who is currently forming her own next-gen girl gang with Suhana Khan and Shanaya Kapoor, also makes regular features on his Instagram. Ahaan also seems to have taken his future in the industry into his own hands by working on his body, his facial expressions and regularly brushing up on filmi trivia. If Ahaan Pandey is the future of Bollywood, we're here for it. These two were all the internet could talk about after mom Sridevi posted pictures of them on a family vacation to her Instagram audience. Jhanvi and Khushi soon started popping up on everyone-who-is-anyone's social media feeds. The girls could be the next Lola and Bebo, they already have the surname, not to mention the bag collection. They're also hanging out with Manish Malhotra while sporting his custom-made creations, not unlike the original Kapoor sisters. The two regularly set trends and are seen hanging out at Bollywood's hottest parties. With the paparazzi already watching their every move, it's time these girls just get an official Instagram account and tell us where they buy their shoes. Imagine having a dad so famous that you walk into a room and people already know who your parents are... That's right, Aryan Khan, heir apparent to King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan's empire, spends most of his time between Mumbai, London and California — where he is reportedly studying — away from the paparazzi's invasive lens. Aryan looks exactly like Shah Rukh Khan down to his pouty selfie face and messy hair. But his attitude seems to be in tune with the other next-gen actors of his generation. Aryan's Instagram account has cleaned up as of a year ago to mirror selfies and pictures with his mom, Gauri Khan. With currently only 19 posts on Instagram, the kid already has a 585k strong following and a verified profile. We can't wait to see what numbers he does on the first day at the box office. Saif Ali Khan's daughter with his ex-wife Amrita Singh is already famous, and she doesn't even have a movie out. But that's expected when you're Bollywood royalty... and royalty in general. Sara has been spotted around cafes in Bandra frequented by Bollywood's actresses, she's been sporting Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla creations at A-list events and she's even been linked to other Bollywood stars. Naturally, she's also been spotted at parties with step-mom Kareena Kapoor and aunt Soha Ali Khan, attracting a fan following with her understated approach to red carpet beauty and fabulous taste in footwear. Anurag Kashyap's daughter is all about street styling, but she's more Gangs of New York than Gangs of Wasseypur . Aaliyah Kashyap is besties with Khushi Kapoor and the two can be seen taking over most Instagram frames. From what we gather, Aaliyah is not too different from her dad and will probably end up being behind the camera rather than in front of it. She's only 16, so she probably won't be making any mobster movies but maybe a rom-com starring her best friends — think PG 13 Sex and the City. These three ladies will probably make their debut alongside each other just because they seem to be inseparable. It's no surprise Shah Rukh Khan's daughter, Suhana's besties are both star kids. That's right, Ananya Pandey is none other than Chunky Pandey's daughter — all part of one big Bolly gang. Shanaya is Sanjay Kapoor's daughter which makes her first cousins with Khushi and Jhanvi Kapoor and also Sonam, Arjun and Harshvardhan Kapoor. That's right all these ladies have some serious lineage. With the paparazzi stalking their every move, they could be the next girl gang on the block. Let's not forget when Khushi and Jhanvi link up with them, they've got Kareena and Karisma's Valentino pumps to fill. If it wasn't for that family photo which is a dead giveaway, one might wonder who Aarav Bhatia is. The offspring of Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna is the perfect balance of Bollywood genes. Aarav, however, keeps a low profile, like he may just spring his career on us tomorrow or never (But we really hope it's tomorrow). Aarav is athletic, we gather from Twinkle's Instagram. He also seems to spend a lot of downtime with the family and is almost averse to any form of media coverage. Aarav may be following in the footsteps of Tiger Shroff, in this sense. We'll just have to wait and see Ahaan Panday Ahaan Panday is the son of Chikki and Deanne Panday, making him the nephew of Chunky Pandey. The sexiest saris you have ever seen on Bollywood celebrities

The sexiest saris you have ever seen on Bollywood celebrities When less is more By Shweta Gandhi November 13, 2017 SHARE Regarded as one of the most elegant garments in an Indian woman's wardrobe, the origins of the sari can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilisation in 1800 BC. Standing the test of time, in part due to its versatility, the sari can be worn to nearly any occasion, whether a wedding, festival, dinner or boardroom meeting. Though it's one of the most conventional outfits, of late, contemporary styles like sari gowns, low-cut blouses, sheer pallus and embellished belts have been revving up the sari, giving it a modern twist. Psychologists explain why you're still so obsessed with Selena Gomez-Justin Bieber

Psychologists explain why you're still so obsessed with Selena Gomez-Justin Bieber It is maybe not too late to say sorry By Julia Pugachevsky November 13, 2017 SHARE There are few relationships as obsessed over as Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. So naturally, when Selena immediately reconnected with Justin at the end of her 10-month relationship with The Weeknd, the internet went wild. The frenzy over their brunches and bike rides makes sense: Selena and Justin first became a public couple SEVEN years ago. Spanning more than half a decade , Jelena delivered us the highs and lows of any highly-addictive soap opera: sensual black-and-white Instagrams, public fights , emotional talk show interviews, and, of course, single after single about the trials of their relationship. Despite their predictable pattern of breakups, people still root for the rise of Jelena. Here, Dr. Melanie Greenberg , a clinical psychologist in Mill Valley CA, author, and speaker, and Dr. Azadeh Aalai , assistant professor of Psychology at Queensborough Community College in New York, explain exactly what makes Jelena's love story just so addictive. i need new photos of jelena pic.twitter.com/Rhw80qRLQH — wiktoria (@artworkgomez) November 5, 2017 It's the perfect "first love" story Jelena originated in 2010, when the two were seen holding hands in Philadelphia. The two teen stars started off as friends and swatted away dating rumors for a while. But once they became official, there was no holding back – they went to red carpets together, kissed backstage, and seemed completely consumed with each other. No matter how you feel about Justin Bieber now, you have to admit that him carrying Selena's dress train is a swoon-worthy boyfriend move. Soon after, the early years of their relationship experienced quite a few lows – a paternity suit involving Justin, Instagram posts from both parties hinting at breakups — yet, for years, they always managed to come back together. If young people especially 'ship Jelena, chemistry may be to blame. “Our brain grows a lot between 13 and 25," says Dr. Greenberg. "...At that age, things are more dramatic – the colors are brighter, your heart is more broken. [Your brain doesn't] have as much self-regulation. So there is more drama, and some might refer to as romantic.” “First love is magical and exciting, and can be volatile and hard to forget,” says Dr. Aalai. “[Jelena activates] nostalgia for adults–we romanticize our first love because there is a sense of innocence and openness when we approach love for the first time that a lot of us lose as we get older. We become more guarded and jaded and in a lot of ways are seeking to recapture the euphoria and notion of possibility associated with first love." And Selena and Justin just happen to perfectly embody the overwhelming force that is teen love. You either remember the exquisite joy of loving someone before ever being disappointed, or you want to know what it was like, making Jelena compelling for people of all ages. Their biggest hits are about each other Yes, everyone loves following Jelena's every social media move, from out-of-the-blue selfies together to shady comments on each others' photos...but no deleted Instagram or interview quote holds a candle to the most emotional representation of their relationship: their music. When they broke up in 2013, Selena came out with “Love Will Remember”; Justin’s own takes on the breakup were featured in “Heartbreaker”, “Hold Tight”, “Recovery” and “All That Matters." Selena released “The Heart Wants What It Wants” in 2014 and drove an audience to tears when she performed it at the AMAs. Then, in 2015, Justin recorded “Sorry”, “What Do You Mean?” and “Mark My Words”, confirming that they were about Selena on The Ellen Degeneres Show . And Selena’s 2016 single, “It Ain’t Me”, is about Bieber as well. The crux of their musical careers as adults has been dominated by songs about each other – it’s practically impossible to separate their music from their relationship.“That fuels their whole story – that they never lost their connection," says Dr. Greenberg. "And music is a romantic medium, it’ supposed to conjure emotion,” she continues. It also helps that the lyrics themselves reflect a cycle of loss and regret, or, in Selena's case, loss, regret and moving on with confidence. "Consumers feel like they have a front row seat to the drama and thus they feel more invested in the outcome,” says Dr. Aalai. You want a bad boy to be better The Justin we publicly know now is a stark contrast to his sweet boy image when he first became famous and, soon after, began dating Selena. In addition to mishaps like minor car collisions and #monkeyproblems, their song lyrics piece together a familiar narrative of a bad boy who "made mistakes once or twice or maybe a couple of hundred times" and "was staying out all night." “There is a fantasy of the ‘bad boy’ being redeemed by his devotion and love from a ‘good woman’, so those gendered stereotypes are also triggered by the narrative of this love story,” says Aalai. Dr. Greenberg explains further, “Part of the hero story is the hero maturing or going through some sort of a journey. [It's also] such a romantic narrative. You see that in movies: ‘I’m changing because of you.'’ Justin, playing his role perfectly, has a history of trying to win Selena back, whether it was Insta-recording love songs for her or unofficially dedicating an album to her. But his Access Hollywood interview back in 2015 revealed another layer to the story: that he'd "never stop loving her." Simply put: if you’ve ever loved someone who hurt you, this is the outcome you secretly dream of (but would never admit to your friends who all tell you he’s trash): that he is filled with regret for years because he lost you, despite having dated other people. It's the ending people want, but are (rightly) skeptical of in real life. "There are many people who get infatuated or fixated on a person who may not be right for them and imagine that they could be the one to ‘save’ or redeem the person," says Dr. Aalai. "I think some of that mythology is triggered by the Justin-Selena pairing – she appears to soften him and redeem some of the rougher edges of his character. In turn, it gives consumers ‘hope’ that true love can conquer all." what are your feels on jelena? i’m happy if selena is happy but asdfghjkl he better keep her safe or i’m raging pic.twitter.com/p3utFwSSa6 — gabriella (@velvetgh0st) November 3, 2017 Jelena is more than another tabloid-nourishing celebrity couple—they’re two people who’ve been a part of each other’s lives, whether dating or not, for so long, and through so many stages. While their track record might hint at another inevitable breakup, their history points to possibilities of something else. They’re older now. They’ve spent some time apart, with different people.
