Bangladesh Accord update: significant progress but still major life-threatening safety concerns

Bangladesh Accord update: significant progress but still major life-threatening safety concerns

The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh (Accord) has issued its quarterly progress report, finding that the overall remediation progress for the more than 1,600 factories covered by it stands at 80 percent. There is even 100 percent remediation from initial inspections at 120 factories and 90 percent or more at 665 factories. In addition, the Safety Committee training curriculum has been completed at 159 factories and 208 health and safety complaints have been resolved. Thinking back to numerous garment factory fires and the collapse of the Rana Plaza building that triggered the massive remediation effort, it is reassuring to know that 94.8 percent of factories have removed lockable and/or collapsible gates, meaning workers have more chances of escaping the factory in an emergency. Prior to the initiative, factories often just had one escape route and door, which triggered panic among the workers and led to many being trapped. Another big problem was fire warning systems and sprinklers not being in place. As of 1st October, 2017, the full installation of such systems including final verification of testing and commissioning has been completed at a little less than one third (31.3 percent) of all factories. However, most of them have submitted fire alarm and fire detection design drawings to the Accord and are in the process of ordering and installing the systems. After four years of work in Bangladesh, the Accord finds: "While marking this significant progress, major life-threatening safety concerns remain outstanding in too many factories and need to be fixed urgently. These include: inadequately protected fire exits, inadequate fire alarm and fire protection systems and outstanding structural retrofitting work." This shows that it is necessary that the Accord be extended beyond its initial five-year duration, which will run out in May 2018, also in view of the Alliance for Worker Safety in Bangladesh not being extended beyond 2018 but being transitioned to various local stakeholders. An extension for another three years of the Accord has already been announced and 49 brands and retailers have already signed the new Accord , covering almost 1,200 of the current Accord factories. However, more still need to join. Currently, the Accord "monitors completion of remediation at the 1600+ factories with more than 100 engineers on staff who conduct up to 500 follow-up inspections each month. Each factory covered by the Accord is inspected approximately once every three to four months. The Accord secretariat further conducts targeted remediation review meetings with individual signatory companies to identify high priority factories where remediation must be accelerated." Thanks to refinements made to Accord’s data system, the remediation progress at all factories covered can now be analysed more in-depth by looking at the progress rate of the most common fire, electrical and structural items that need to be remediated. These and other details, including the progress made over the years, can be found in the latest quarterly report via the Accord's website, bangladeshaccord.org. Brand Factory does a first, to charge entry fee on 'free-shopping' days

Future Group is doing what perhaps no other retailer has done ever: charging customers a cover of Rs 100-250 to enter its discount fashion format Brand Factory. The cover charge would be applicable during a five-day promotion campaign from November 22-26, when Brand Factory will charge consumers buying goods worth Rs 5,000 at maximum retail price (MRP) from its 50-odd stores only Rs 2,000. Even that would be returned in the form of free merchandise, gift vouchers and cash back in the company’s mobile wallet. Customers can also redeem the entry fee against purchases. Kishore Biyani, Founder stated the move is similar to pre-bookings online and in the bargain its gaining customer loyalty. It is to encourage serious shoppers, and bring exclusivity to their shopping experience, says Biyani. In 2016, Brand Factory, a discount chain built on the lines America’s TJ Max and Marshalls did business worth Rs 115 crore during a similar three-day shopping event, selling more than a million pieces of garments. But the crowd was too big to manage. Some 12 lakh people visited Brand Factory outlets during the event. This time, the company expects a more controlled environment. According to Suresh Sadhwani, Business Head the company hopes to limit customers and curate the footfalls better. Over the past two years, several retailers have been taking steps to help customers impatient with long lines at checkout counters, especially on weekends.

Victoria's Secret gala hits snag in China as model pulls out

Victoria's Secret gala hits snag in China as model pulls out

Top US fashion model Gigi Hadid on Friday pulled out of the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show in Shanghai after an online video showing her apparently making a slant-eyes face sparked criticism in China. The announcement is the second apparent snag to hit the US lingerie maker's A-list underwear extravaganza set for Monday, following reports that three Russians and one Ukrainian model had failed to obtain Chinese visas. Hadid, ranked fifth on Forbes' list of the highest-paid women models last year at 9 million USD, had excitedly announced her participation in the show in August. She gave no reason for the reversal. "I'm so bummed I won't be able to make it to China this year," the 22-year-old said on Twitter. "Love my VS family, and will be with all my girls in spirit!" Hadid's pull-out averts a potential PR disaster for Victoria's Secret, which is hoping to shore up a sagging bottom line with a push into China's growing intimate-wear market. I’m so bummed I won’t be able to make it to China this year. Love my VS family, and will be with all my girls in spirit!! Can't wait to tune in with everyone to see the beautiful show I know it will be, and already can't wait for next year! :) x — Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) November 16, 2017 The company opened its first flagship stores in China this year and Monday's show is the first held outside the US or Europe. Chinese internet users lashed out at Hadid after her sister Bella -- another of the three dozen or more models expected in Shanghai -- posted an Instagram video in February showing Gigi squinting her eyes while holding up a Buddha-shaped cookie. After Hadid announced in August that she would come to Shanghai, many Chinese accused her of racism and warned her to stay away. She posted a bilingual apology on China's Twitter-like Weibo on September 1, declaring her "respect and love for the people of China" and swearing she meant no harm, but even that drew flak. A Victoria's Secret spokesman declined to comment when asked by AFP whether Hadid pulled out on her own, was asked to by the company, or whether Chinese authorities applied any pressure. Not welcome Chinese Weibo users mostly crowed over her withdrawal. "Suddenly I have better feelings about VS. If she had come, I would never buy VS my entire life," said one posting. Others, however, expressed regret, noting Hadid's apology. Speculation has also swirled over the participation of Russia's Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova, and Ukraine's Dasha Khlystun, after unconfirmed reports suggested they were denied Chinese visas. The Victoria's Secret spokesman declined comment. "That's getting into a Chinese government issue. Victoria's Secret is not going to comment on that," he said, referring line-up questions to each model's individual agencies. The annual show, viewed by millions worldwide, features the planet's top models including Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Jasmine Tookes and Lais Ribeiro. It tapes Monday and airs globally on November 28. China's foreign ministry said Friday it was "not aware" of the Hadid or visa issues. "I can only tell you that we welcome foreign citizens to come to China, to engage in normal trade, tourism and cultural activities. And we are willing to issue visas to the eligible applicants," ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily briefing. Hadid joins a list of foreigners who wore out their China welcome. Celebrities including singers Bjork, Elton John and Lady Gaga, and actors such as Richard Gere and Sharon Stone, have either been banned or pilloried for words or actions deemed as criticising China on sensitive topics like Tibetan independence and human rights. Argentine international footballer Ezequiel Lavezzi, who plays for Chinese club Hebei China Fortune, apologised in May after publicity photos showing him pulling the corners of his eyes back in a slant-eyed gesture angered many. He is still with the club. (AFP)

The company anticipates closing up to 60 stores in the US by year-end through natural lease expirations, including 14 stores closed to date. Picture:Hollister website

Delhi's famous Indian Accent restaurant now has a new location

Delhi's famous Indian Accent restaurant now has a new location Warning: This will cause serious hunger pangs By Amrit Sharma November 16, 2017 SHARE This has been a very busy period for Indian Accent. Last year started with the launch of a new restaurant in New York, followed by news of opening in London at the end of this year and back in home country, they surprised everyone by announcing the move from their decades old setting at The Manor in New Friends Colony to the hip Lodhi Hotel. Elle was there amongst the first guests invited to sample the reworked menu and to take in the new venue. Indian Accent has taken over the old On the Waterfront premises and the full glass interiors overlooking the water body and the glass atrium, make a stunning setting for the gastronomic extravaganza that Indian Accent promises. With more covers than before, a bar/waiting area and a private party area upstairs, the new venue should allow more Delhiites to experience this one-of-a-kind restaurant. We were seated in the glass atrium taking full advantage of the winter afternoon sun and after a welcome drink of sparkling wine, we decided to go for the Chef’s tasting menu with a few iterations. The meal started with 5 water puchkas — delicate golgappas paired with 5 different waters, that went from tangy to sweet and were a perfect amuse-bouche to tease you with what lay ahead. This was followed by the duck khurchan cornet — succulent duck stuffed in pastry cornets with a herb yoghurt and chilly chutney. We veered off the menu for the next course opting for the soft shell crab with roast almonds podi and tomato thokku chutney which is something we had never tried before and we highly recommend it. The next course was the meetha achar pork spare ribs which has always been on top of our list of must-haves at the restaurant which was followed by a palate-cleansing anar and churan kulfi before the mains — Tamarind Crab, accompanied by beans foogath, coconut curry, black dal, chestnut and wasabi raita and an assortment of kulchas. We were stuffed to the gills by the time we finished the mains and had to struggle with the excellent dessert selection of custard apple cream, carrot halwa crumble and fig and whiskey ice cream. We were a sated happy lot by the time we finished the meal and an afternoon siesta was definitely on the cards! The chef’s tasting menu costs Rs 3,500/person excluding taxes. Condé Nast India welcomes Netflix CEO Reed Hastings with an intimate soirée

Ronnie Screwvala and Vidhu Vinod Chopra Image: Kedar Nene Akshay Chudasama with Nirav Modi Image: Kedar Nene Kuruvilla and Hastings with Vibha and Vishal Bakshi Image: Kedar Nene On Friday, November 17, Condé Nast India’s managing director Alex Kuruvilla welcomed Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to Mumbai with a gathering of some of the most interesting personalities in the city. At Aer, Four Seasons, Mumbai, over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and lively conversation, notes on favourite shows, binge watches and the future of television were exchanged. The guest list featured names such as Jacqueline Fernandez, Anupama and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Chetan and Roohi Jaikishen, Nirav Modi, Rahul Khanna, Homi Adajania and Rajkummar Rao, among others. One of the highlights of the evening was a quick Q&A hosted by Kuruvilla with Hastings, where discussion ranged from the possible death of the current linear TV model to the importance of “occasional unbelievable brilliance” over “everyday precision” in his business. Of course, the occasion demanded a few Netflix-related questions. We asked a few of the guests what their favourite shows on the hugely popular streaming service were. Here’s what they said: REED HASTINGS What was the last thing you saw on Netflix? I just watched Alias Grace , and now I’m watching Lady Dynamite —it’s very LA centric. What is the most intriguing thing you’ve seen on Netflix? Has to be Stranger Things . And maybe Mindhunter —it’s about serial killers. What would be your pick for a weekend Netflix binge? The Crown . Season 2 is just coming up in December. What show on Netflix do you feel is relevant to the current times? You know we love entertainment. It’s not news, it’s not about the current times so we would try to stay away [from that]. Just for the joy of watching, I would say Narcos . It’s not about the current times but it’s an incredible show. What’s your favourite genre on Netflix? Dramas and period pieces. What’s your favourite thing to watch on Netflix for a laugh?
