We asked a dermat: Everything you wanted to know about laser treatments

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Image: Shutterstock We don’t blame you if you’ve got laser treatments categorised as a hobby idea for the Kardashians. Despite all the advancements that laser skin resurfacing technology has made in the past decade, the flow of information is still primitive. If you’ve never quite known how to voice your queries regarding these magic treatments, you’ve come to the right place. The year is 2017, the world of laser treatments has made progress by leaps and bounds, and now holds the answer to everything from acne scar correction to hair removal. Eager to delve into the basics of these in-office procedures, we got Mumbai-based dermatologist Dr Madhuri Agarwal to give us an all you need to know manual. Here’s what we learned. PRE-TREATMENT What do I need to know about laser treatments before I go? Laser, short for Light Amplified by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, is a source of light with different wavelengths, with each individual wavelength absorbing different skin components. Which is why you’ll find different skin ailments being treated by laser including acne marks , dark spots, pigmentation patches and ageing issues. However, bear in mind that lasers may not deliver results with a single treatment. Which are the most commonly used treatments right now? The most popular treatments in the market right now are laser for hair removal, acne scars, de-tanning, uneven skin tone, skin tightening, ageing signs, tattoo removal and stretch mark correction. Who is an ideal candidate for skin laser treatments? Anyone above the age of 18 years can safely opt for laser procedures. But you’ll find dermatologists generally advising caution, and even avoiding treatments, in the following cases:1) Pregnant ladies are advised to abstain from lasers as there isn’t sufficient evidence or studies to prove the safety of lasers in pregnancy. 2) People with Keloid scarring, autoimmune disorders, active infections and a history of raised moles and melanoma are advised against laser treatments as well. What should I clarify with my doctor before opting for a laser procedure? The most crucial step in your prep involves verifying that the person treating you is a certified dermatologist, as there are many unauthorised centres mushrooming under the guise of professional clinics. Inadequate certification and training could lead to zero results and laser burns. Also, you need to ensure that the doctor is using an FDA-approved laser machine as the market is flooded with poor quality laser devices that can negatively impact results. Take heed and inform the doctor about your medical conditions, ongoing medications, pregnancy planning (for women) and travel profile. This will enable your dermatologist to chart an adequate plan for subsequent laser sessions. DURING TREATMENT Do in-office laser treatments require a long recovery time? With the advancements in technology, laser treatments require practically zero downtime and are medically safe. Most treatments can even be conducted at lunchtime and the patient can go back to work immediately. What is an ideal beauty regimen on the day before the treatment? Ensure that you restrict sun exposure for at least a week prior, as it can often lead to skin darkening, especially for the Indian skin type. If you must step out during peak hours, lather up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen . It is advised that you avoid any salon treatments such as threading, waxing, bleaching or facials for at least ten days before a laser session. Prune out exfoliating scrubs and creams containing alpha hydroxy acid , beta hydroxy acid , retinoids and lightening agents out of your beauty regimen for three days before your laser appointment. POST-TREATMENT What precautions need to be taken after the treatment? Post-laser care is generally explained meticulously by your dermatologist. These are the finer points to be kept in mind:1) Avoid sun exposure for three-five days after the session. Likewise, halt any plans that involve steam, sauna and swimming for the 72 hour-period after your treatment.2) Add a generous dose of moisturising cream to your daily beauty routine to calm drying skin . Is there anything I need to avoid in the recovery period? It is advised that you avoid strenuous workouts for three-five days after opting for laser for skin resurfacing. Ensure that you adequately apply sunscreen and moisturiser immediately after each gym session as a blanket rule. Salon activities and skin treatments should be avoided as well for the first one week after a laser session. Haven’t been able to pick a concealer that matches your skin tone? Has your face been breaking out even when you don’t overload your skin with different products? We’re going back to basics with ‘Beauty 101 ’, our series that’ll be your complete guide to everything beauty In This Series : Beauty 101

Arriving on the red carpet with parents Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, the upcoming actor opted for an applique choli and a lehenga skirt-pants hybrid featuring embroidered detail by Anamika Khanna for the event. While black is not a conventional colour when it comes to festive wear, the bright embroidery on the ensemble gave the somber hue a playful update, making this one perfect for a friend’s sangeet. Another unusual element of her outfit was the lehenga-pants hybrid—the slim pants had a connected skirt over it, adding visual drama to her red carpet look. Kapoor anchored her busy separates with a black and white embroidered clutch by The Pink Potli, drop earrings by Shree Pramani Jewels and classic black heels. Keeping her beauty look simple, she went with sleek eyeliner, peachy lips, dewy make-up and messy curls. If you’re done with classic Indian outfits but have commitments on your calendar that need ethnic wear, take inspiration from Kapoor’s latest ensemble and swap your lehenga skirt in favour of this contemporary Anamika Khanna outfit. Bridal wear shopping guide: Best designers, jewellers and more in Kolkata

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Next Kolkata—the land of the intellectual and the offbeat, a city that heavily steeped in old world charm is known for its unique viewpoint. Culturally and fashion-wise, this makes for a great shopping hub, as you are bound to find treasures for your wedding trousseau that are unlikely to be found anywhere. Here’s a comprehensive guide to finding everything you need before your big day. DESIGNER WEDDING WEAR STORES IN KOLKATA: 1 /7 Anamika Khanna Anamika Khana is loved dearly by many but her creations can be notoriously difficult to procure, given her disinclination to flood too many stores with merchandise. Here in Kolkata, her flagship space offers selections for ready-to-wear and bridal, and if you have the budget for a sizeable trousseau, then a personal appointment with her may be advisable. Image: Instagram.com/anamikakhanna.in Sabyasachi Couture The designer has mastered his craft to perfection and makes it to almost any discerning buyer’s list of covetable designer pieces. The variety is dazzling and if you’re looking to add statement ensembles to your occasion wardrobe, then this is your one-stop shop. Image: Instagram.com/thinking_totty Sabyasachi Bridal The fact that Sabyasachi has a second store in the city catering to just bridal wear should give an indication of the kind of curated largesse one can expect at this store. If you are the sort of bride who must only be adorned in Sabyasachi (and there are a fair number), then a visit to Kolkata should be a must-do on your list. Image: Instagram.com/fashion_haul_ Nupur Kanoi Kanoi has slowly but surely climbed the fashion charts, offering a unique twist to contemporary Indian wear, using traditional techniques, fabrics and embroideries. Her first flagship space is due to open in a few weeks, but in the meanwhile, she can be contacted for a personal appointment. Her aesthetic will definitely appeal to a younger clientele who want to add some cool spunk to their Indian wear. Image: Instagram.com/rajmahtanicouturejewels Eina Ahluwalia Eina Ahluwalia’s designs always tell a riveting story just as they always celebrate woman power, fashioning into delicate swirls of metal, finished to perfection. She offers options of silver, gold-plated silver and pure gold for many of her pieces, allowing the customer to select a price point that works best. While her jewels make for obvious gifting choices, it’s a good idea to add a few signatures to a trousseau chest as well. Image: Instagram.com/einaahluwalia Vasundhara Fashion jewellery is the only way to go when it involves travelling with trinkets and Vasundhara’s baubles are high in drama and impact, making them ideal enhancers to any ensembles. This is how celebrities pull off backless gowns and plunging necklines without fear

Self-adhesive adjustable bra Plunge front with back extender If your gown demands maximum exposure — we're talking back, side boob and cleavage — you may want to opt for pasties. The sticky silicon nipple covers are super adhesive and cover your nipples with the right amount of padding, so your boobs don't turn you into a human barometer. Since they only cover the nipple area, chances of them slipping off due to sweat are minimised. Of course, they offer no actual support or enhancement whatsoever, so if you’re looking for a shape up or quick lift, this is not your best option. Get them at Amazon.in. Kim Kardashian is responsible for popularising this hack and heavy-chested women the world over may sing her praises. We're not sure how good the adhesive is for your skin but it does hold up great against sweat. Duct tape also hurts when you take it off, so you may want to wear pasties to protect your nipples and then place the tape on top. Hit up a hardware store and then follow this tutorial: Celebrity fashion stylist Naheed Driver lets us in on one of her styling secrets: medical tape. Everyone's heard of Kim's duct tape, but the cloth finish white medical tape works on clothes that aren't black. "Black tends to become slightly see-through under lights, so you'll clearly be able to see the colour difference in the tape. But on a white top or any other solid colour cloth finish medical tape works better." It holds up just as well against under-boob sweat and keeps everything in place. Tape and lift vertically if you're wearing a low neck halter. But it also works horizontally to give the impression of cleavage in low-cut back tops. Remember it's medial grade adhesive, so while it's skin friendly, it may hurt your nipples when you rip it off, not the same as a band aid, we assure you. Pick it up from your friendly neighbourhood chemist. The self-adhesive adjustable bra was all over the internet being pushed as a viable backless bra option. This bra was one of the first to offer a fuller upper boob shape while being backless. But it only really gives you that cleavage if you already have a fuller bust. The catch 22 is that on a full bust, this tends to not offer too much support and the glue may start to wear off as the duration of wear lengthens. The adjustable front also makes this near impossible to wear with a plunging neck line. Cup sizes are available, so you can get an option that best suits your bust. Make sure to choose a company which is known to have a good adhesive with good reviews This is great when you want the support of a bra without having to wear one. The plunge front with a back extender option offers full support, all of it. It's great for tops with a low scoop back and a low front. However, because of the straps extending to wrap around your upper waist, there is a limit to how low your blouse back can go. Since it's also got the skeletal structures of a standard bra halter straps may be an option but a tube one wouldn't offer the same support. You can buy a plunging bra here or buy the extenders separately and add them onto your regular bra. Vogue tries it: 4 hair-smoothening serums that promise to beat winter frizz

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! Next Your hair is the first to take a hit as soon as the temperature starts to drop. You’ll find your regular conditioner isn’t working as hard and the lengths of your mane will start to feel drier than usual. And with the onset of the party season, excessive heat styling and product usage can strip your hair of moisture even further. We put to test four hair serums that claim to keep your hair feeling soft and hydrated all day. Matrix Biolage Smooth Proof Avocado Deep Smoothing Serum, Rs 295 “I’ve never cut my hair in my life , so dry ends are what I live with and a serum is a must—I’ve been using the same one for about five years now. While I don’t really have too many complaints, I do feel like my mane is now used to it, which has reduced the product’s efficiency. This Matrix serum contains avocado oil which is supposed to super moisturising. But that was also a fact that worried me because I have thin, long hair and can’t afford for it to be weighed down. Upon running it through my damp lengths, I found that the serum not only absorbed quickly, it had my hair feeling smoother than normal in a single use. Plus, it’s a steal for the price. Lucky I’m just about done with my old bottle—change is good.” – Anjan Sachar, beauty writer – Vogue.in Wella Professionals Oil Reflections Smoothing Oil, Rs 1,000 “If you’re looking for a product with nourishing properties without any of the greasiness, this Wella bottle ticks all the boxes. With the ingredient list featuring Macadamia seed oil, avocado oil and vitamin E, this lightweight serum gave my hair just the right amount of hydration, leaving it soft and smooth throughout the day. Unlike most serums, it does not weigh your hair down and leaves a soft glossy reflection. Whether your hair is colour treated or just unbearably frizzy, this product is suitable for all hair types. As a person who fits into both those categories, I’d give this product my vote.” – Bahaar Peshawaria, digital graphic designer Moroccanoil Treatment, For Seriously Dry Hair, Rs 2,880 “I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I hate flyaways. While my hair tends to behave itself for 24 hours after I’ve shampooed it, it also goes a little crazy the day I give it a vigorous wash. And really, who likes to walk into office looking like Simba? Morroccanoil’s hair serum is slightly thicker in texture than the one I usually use, but it coated my semi-dry hair very easily (all you need is a pump and a half for medium-length hair). Thanks to its dense consistency, my hair had settled into place considerably well by the next morning. Plus, its mild, soothing fragrance lingered in my hair for a full day, and even my gnarliest of split ends felt soft for a change. Personally, I’d be happy to replace my hair serum with this one permanently.” – Nitya Chablani, digital features editor L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Liss Unlimited Evening Primrose Oil, Rs 650 “For starters, I am obsessed with my long locks. I straighten or blow-dry them almost two-three times a week, which can often make my hair unruly and a little coarse. This week, however, L’Oréal’s Primrose oil serum came to my rescue. I applied a small amount of it after I towel dried my hair just before the blow-drying it, which instantly made my strands soft and smooth. If you’re looking for a serum that controls the frizz and will make your hair shine, give this one a try.” – Raveena Shahpuri, digital writer

Exploring Artusi’s new dining space with MasterChef winner Valerio Braschi

YOU HAVE READ OF 10 STORIES THIS MONTH 30 day free access to digital issues worth INR 400 Get it now ! 1 /9 It’s never rare to get the authentic Italian experience at the cult favourite Artusi, and the offering just grew manifold when Artusi announced an elegant new dining space at Gurugram along with a fresh aperitivo menu. One such aperitivo was graced by the presence of the effervescent Valerio Braschi, who won MasterChef Italy when he was just 18. What followed was an evening of gastronomic experiences, cooking cultures and indulgent cocktails and crostinis. Back to basics Amidst rustic Italian vocals and an intimate setting featuring soft hues and classical mouldings, the tête-a-tête starts over a stiff Negroni, which Oscar Balcon (owner of Artusi) tells is elemental in an aperitivo as the bitterness induces hunger and readies one for the main meal. Sharing a common chord through Artusi’s focus region Emilia Romagna, Braschi reminisces his childhood, “Our region has more than a 100 varieties of pastas and our grandmas would make sure we get all of them right. They get very angry if we fail to do that.” This early preparation probably doesn’t surprise when one discovers about the severe judges that scrutinised Braschi’s winning dish combining smoked salmon with plankton foam and cocoa and awarded him the coveted title at such a young age. However, the same experimental Braschi considers a classic Italian meal to be a hearty lasagne, tortellini and capellini. As the discussion moves deeper into rustic Italian gastronomy, the aperitivo introduces its delicate crostinis. The Salmone e Avocado with an airy avocado mousse catches our attention, along with Crudo e Bufala, featuring 18-month cured Parma Ham on soft buffalo mozzarella. Viva Italia! Here in India for the ongoing ‘Celebrating 70 Years of India-Italy’ event organised by the Italian Embassy, Braschi has spent his short three-day visit experimenting with Indian street food (think desserts and chutneys) on one-hand and sampling specialty restaurants on the other. One such experience was meeting Manish Mehrotra from the Indian Accent. “I tried the Coconut Crab Curry and it was an explosion of flavours,” beams Braschi, and fittingly, this is the flavour from India that he wants to take back with him to experiment with in his cooking adventures. Talking about the growing Italian food culture in India with specialty places like Artusi blooming, he adds a quick tip, “Italian food is low on spices, the moment you put a lot of spices it means that your core ingredient like meats or vegetables are poor in quality. Focus on your main ingredient and let the flavours explode!” Nodding at this thought, Balcon adds, “With Italian food, you have to eat it, experience it and let is grow on you,” and introduces us to the specialty Shrubs cocktails on the aperitivo menu. Don’t let the word shrubs mislead you; there is certainly nothing growing on your cocktails. Shrubs form part of a 150-year-old technique of fruit preservation in Italy when refrigeration was not an option. The process involves macerating fruits and soaking them in vinegar for a week. The residual liquid was then used for variety of cooking purposes, and in Artusi’s case, for unique cocktails. The Modena, featuring Modena balsamic shrubs and gin, along with the Sidro al Tropici with cider shrubs, bourbon and Amaretto, are scintillating additions to any cocktail connoisseurs tastebuds. Dolce endings As the evening progresses, one notices the cosy interiors of the new Artusi’s dining space, warm like a living room with a fireplace, European art and luxurious finishes. Braschi adds how he finds the space to be really romantic and shares his future plans, “I plan to open a restaurant soon in Milan that mixes varied flavours with little portions that create gastronomic explosions.” On this note, the evening ends with Artusi’s speciality gelatos, not just featuring the freshest of fruits, but balsamic vinegar as well. Surprised? Don’t be, the new dining space only lives up to its promises and brings gems from Italy on the diner’s plates… and glasses. Katrina Kaif’s year in beauty: 28 best hairstyles and makeup looks

Katrina Kaif, November 2017 Image: Viral Bhayani While Katrina Kaif rarely looks less than flawless, the actor isn’t known for experimentation with her beauty look. Through her 15 years in the limelight, her hair colour has remained pretty constant (with the exception of that fiery-red phase for Fitoor ), and her makeup is mostly minimal. But as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke… If you’re the kind of person who’d prioritise an extra 15 minutes of sleep over putting on a full face of makeup, Katrina Kaif has your back. You will rarely spot the actor stray from her signature nude-lip-natural-face look, but that’s not to say she won’t give that bold red lip a go when the occasion calls for it. We tracked the actor’s best hairstyles and makeup looks through 2017, and here’s what we found. Less is more Kaif isn’t one for too many public appearances—you won’t spot her being shot by paparazzi at a health cafe or gym on the daily. But she makes sure her numbered outings don’t go unnoticed. For the first half of 2017, she primarily stepped out with a fresh blow-dry, dewy skin, glossy lips and her trademark: multiple coats of mascara. For a formal, red carpet occasion, the actor opted for matte skin , a soft pink pout and her mane left loose on her back with a few short layers framing her face. In April, we saw Kaif deliver two looks that could basically go straight from day to night—the first, blown-out waves and a nude lip; the second, hair set into a deep side part, with an upgraded cherry red pout. She kicked off Jagga Jasoos promotions in the month of June, which means we got to see a lot more of the star. Think heaps of lip gloss, dewy skin that’s lit from within, hints of blush made to look like a natural flush and mascara by the dozen. She either had her hair blown out, in open, structured curls or with her crown pinned back. Up the ante As the promotions extended into July, so did her public appearances. She maintained the same vibe for her hairstyles and makeup for the movie, however stepped it up for other events. She chose an updo with face-framing, curled layers on one occasion, side-pinned curls on another and textured open curls pulled to one side with a bold red lip for the IIFA 2017 . August and September was all about fresh skin and natural hair for her shoot for Tiger Zinda Hai with Salman Khan. In October, she returned to her trusted wavy blowout and nude lips. For a Diwali party that month , Kaif put to use her tried-and-tested dewy skin, open curls and pink lips recipe—a look she carried into this month too.
