Is Shahid Kapoor planning to step into Hrithik Roshan’s shoes?

Is Shahid Kapoor planning to step into Hrithik Roshan’s shoes?

After Hrithik Roshan has opted out of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s sports film on kabaddi as he has no dates till mid next year, a new entrant to the picture is Shahid Kapoor . The younger actor has met Mehra a couple of times and expressed his keenness to act in the sports drama which will be directed by Mehra himself (this will be his next after Mirzya ). Shahid is keen to expand his repertoire of working with some of the best directors today and has no qualms about approaching any director whom he wants to work with as he’s confident about his own acting. Says a trade source, “Hrithik was in talks for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Kabaddi, produced by Ronnie Screwvala and had heard the concept and liked it. The film is a fictional story based on kabaddi and set in a prisoner-of-war camp and the actor would have played a kabaddi player. But Hrithik is busy with Siddharth Anand’s and Vikramaditya Motwane’s next so he informed Ronnie that they should go ahead without him and sign another star. Once Shahid came to know that Hrithik was no longer doing the film he started sending feelers to Rakeysh. He even met the filmmaker a few times and expressed his desire to do the film. Shahid is a very talented actor and has worked with some great directors like Vishal Bharadwaj and Imtiaz Ali so it will be interesting to see him work with Mirzya director for the first time. Also Shahid has never worked before in a sports-centric film.” Mehra’s spokesperson says, “There are two-three scripts that Mr Mehra is working on and one of them is the kabaddi one. It will only be complete by June next year. He is very keen to do the kabaddi movie with Hrithik and once the script is complete, Mr Mehra will give him a proper narration.” Shahid’s next release is Sanjay Leela Bhansali ‘s Padmavati and he has already drawn accolades from many quarters for his portrayal as the King of Chittor, Maha Rawal Ratan Singh, in the film’s trailer.

Twinkle Khanna On Akshay Kumar’s Joke On The Great Indian Laughter Challenge: Take Humour In Its Right Context

Writer, film producer and former actress Twinkle Khanna on Sunday took a stand for her husband Akshay Kumar after he was slammed by comedienne Mallika Dua for a remark aimed at her during a shoot, saying that the actors humour was taken out of context. “I would like to address the controversy on the sets of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’. The show has a bell which the judges ring after a contestant’s exceptional performance and (when) Dua went forward to ring the bell, Kumar said, ‘Mallika ji aap bell bajao main aap ko bajata hun (You ring the bell, I will bang you)’,” Twinkle wrote on Twitter. “A pun on the words and actions related to ringing the bell. It’s a colloquial phrase that both men and women use – for instance, ‘I am going to bajao him/her’ or ‘I got bajaoed’, all without sexist connotations. Vinod Dua, Maliika Dua’s father, had written a post- it’s been taken down now – stating, ‘I am going to screw this cretin Akshay Kumar’. Should Mr Dua’s statement also be taken literally or interpreted in context? Advertisement Sponsored Message Get two free audiobooks! Listening to a well narrated book is an incredible experience. (And yes, it helps us pay our bills too!) Click here for the free trial Words, especially humour has to be seen in its right context,” she added. Twinkle also urged people to stop involving her in this debate. “I have always stood up for the freedom within comedy including defending AIB’s (All India Bakchod’s) infamous roasts on numerous occasions in the past and that is my stance even today, so kindly stop tagging me in this debate,” she said. — Twinkle Khanna (@mrsfunnybones) October 29, 2017 Mallika, a former judge of the Star Plus show, and her father Vinod Dua – a journalist – raised concern regarding Akshay Kumar’s remark earlier this week by sharing a video over social media which was reportedly a leaked portion of an episode shoot held around a month ago, and it was never aired by the channel. It showcases Mallika’s fellow judge Zakir Khan telling Akshay Kumar that they will also accompany him to “ring a bell” as a mark of appreciation for Rangeela for his act mimicking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. That’s when Akshay Kumar says, “ Mallikaji, ‘Aap bell bajao, main aap ko bajata hun ‘ (You ring the bell, I will bang you).”

The makers of PadMan announced that their film will be arriving earlier. It was supposed to release earlier on April 13, 2018. But today they revealed that the film has been preponed to January 26. PadMan stars Akshay Kumar , who plays the major role of the antagonist in 2.0 , which was also scheduled to release on the same day – January 26, 2018! Hence, it seemed like two Akshay Kumar films will release on the same day! It was an unprecedented move – releasing two films of a major superstar on the same day – and this has happened at least in the last one or two decades. A debate already begun on whether this is a right decision, with some arguing that releasing two such significant films is foolhardy and the rest claiming that both films can work as they both belong to diverse genres. But now it has come to light that this unusual clash will not take place. 2.0 has been postponed to April 2018 and most probably would release on the day that PadMan was originally slated to hit theatres – April 13. It would be the Tamil New Year on April 14 and hence, this date is apt to release such a big, significant film. The reason for postponement it seems is because the VFX work will take longer than expected. This is the second time that 2.0 has got postponed. At first, it was all set to release on Diwali 2017. Then, the makers announced of the Republic Day 2018 release. In fact, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to break the news on August 19, 2017 that 2.0 might not make it on January 26, 2018 and the producers back then had denied our report. 2.0 is the sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Robot . The first part starred Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan while 2.0 features Rajinikanth , Amy Jackson and Akshay Kumar. Akshay plays an evil villain in this sci-fi film that is a bi-lingual. It’s shot in Hindi and Tamil and would also have a dubbed Telugu version. The film’s grand music launch took place just two days ago, on October 27, in Dubai. It’s bewildering that 2.0 ’s audio released almost six months before its actual release. PadMan meanwhile is directed by R Balki, written and co-produced by Akshay’s wife Twinkle Khanna and features Akshay in the lead role along with Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte . It is inspired from the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad making machine.

Box Office: Secret Superstar Day 11 in overseas

Aamir Khan decided to bring his Secret Superstar on Diwali day i.e. Thursday. Since this is considered to be one of the lowest potential days for a film to bring in audience, the only explanation that one has is that this could be the way to help fetch good word of mouth a day before the real week begins on Friday. In fact Thursday could well be considered akin to that of ‘Paid Previews’ In this box office report we take a look at the overseas collections [1090 screens] of Secret Superstar on Day 11 (Sunday). Australia box office 10,957 USD [Rs. 7.10 lacs] from 14 screens New Zealand box office

Box Office: Golmaal Again scores well on second Saturday, crosses Rs. 150 crore

Box Office: Golmaal Again scores well on second Saturday, crosses Rs. 150 crore

Golmaal Again is continuing its dream as the film is turning out to be the first and to a very good extent the only choice of the audience. This was reflected on its second Saturday as well when the film brought in Rs. 10.61 crore. Collections are staying on to be very healthy and with this the film has crossed Rs. 150 crore milestone in just nine days. The film currently stands at Rs. 153.93 crore and now Rs. 165 crore would definitely be crossed by tonight. That is superb indeed and yet again reaffirms that audiences are willing to step out of their home and venture into theaters as long as there is promise of good entertainment, something which Ajay Devgn , Rohit Shetty and team made this Diwali. Other Diwali release of the week, Secret Superstar , is doing okay with numbers on the lower side. The film currently stands around Rs. 45.50 crore* mark and it is expected that there would be some sort of jump in numbers today. Promotion of the film has now started focusing on Aamir Khan as well and that is expected to see an increase in footfalls till the time it plays in theaters. The film still has a good number of shows dedicated to it and if only footfalls would be closer to the capacity, a hefty chunk of moolah could well have been added to its overall kitty.

How SRK, Karan Johar and the Chopras got together to prodcue Ittefaq

Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha in 'Ittefaq' You don't often hear about three individuals who want to revisit the same film. Debutant director Abhay Chopra 's upcoming whodunnit , 'Ittefaq', the rebooted version of his grandfather BR Chopra 's 1969 film of the same name, is a case in point. Apart from the Chopras, it drew Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar 's attention, too. And so, it's not an ittefaq that they teamed up on the Sidharth Malhotra-Sonakshi Sinha-Akshaye Khanna starrer. According to an industry source, SRK had promised to work on a film with Abhay's brother Juno, who assisted Karan on Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and is the creative producer on the new version of the suspense thriller. "Once, SRK visited the Chopras when Juno was tending to Raviji. He had worked in 'Bhootnath' for the banner and had promised that he would do a movie with Juno whenever he was ready," says the source. When the Chopras decided to adapt the 1969 Rajesh Khanna-Nanda starrer, Juno reached out to SRK who agreed to come on board. "It's one of SRK's favourite films. Juno told Karan about the film and he, too, expressed his wish to partner on the project," adds the source. "'Ittefaq' is Shah Rukh, Karan and our favourite. It's a fantastic film to collaborate on. We've had a lot of fun working on the film. It has been a wonderful experience," says Juno. Rajkummar Rao: Some films cannot be judged on the basis of their performance at the box office over a weekend

Rajkummar Rao: Some films cannot be judged on the basis of their performance at the box office over a weekend

Rajkummar Rao As Pritam Vidrohi in 'Bareilly Ki Barfi', he had the audience rooting for him. As Newton Kumar, the actor carried the film on his shoulders and his performance had critics raving. With his sixth film this year, 'Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana', the actor is all set to explore a whole new genre — the romantic drama. There is no stopping Rajkummar Rao , as he creates one memorable character after the other on the silver screen. BT caught up with the National Award-winning actor and, in a free-wheeling chat, spoke to him about being a method actor in a commercial film industry, how the Harvey Weinsteins of the world should be exposed and how he never had a plan B in his life. Excerpts... You have always taken up roles for what they are and have no qualms about playing the lead, the second lead or even a cameo. How do you manage to do that so confidently, considering that the industry is quick to stereotype? Both the industry and the audience are undergoing change. Today, they can differentiate between someone who wants to be an actor and someone who just wants the tag of being a hero. So, now is the right time to portray some interesting characters and that's what I try and aim for when I read a script. It might be the second lead, but perhaps it's a much better role than the lead. I would rather choose something that gives me the chance to perform. Have you never thought about doing a masala potboiler, which portrays you as the quintessential Hindi film hero? I don't dream about doing a quintessential masala film, but if somebody offered me such a role, I wouldn't mind trying it out. However, I will do it my way. I won't follow the herd mentality. After all, you have to be in the system to change the system. You sound extremely confident about your stance. Does it stem from a sense of belief in yourself and the fact that you are a good actor? More than confidence, it's the ability to understand the script — you might not be part of the entire story, but if people still talk about you — in a way, you have succeeded. Take for example, Julius Ceaser, who is not shown in the entire play, but the other characters are constantly talking about him, and that keeps him alive in the audience's mind. I guess, my academic approach to cinema stems from the discipline inculcated in me during my stint at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and while doing theater in Delhi. I am not in the film industry for fame, money or because it's glamorous. I am here because I genuinely love cinema. There was never a plan B in my life. I never came to try my luck, give it a year and then see how it goes. If this is something I am doing every day and earning my bread and butter, then I better take it seriously. Your mother, who passed away recently, once mentioned that you had changed schools to improve your English. Looks like you felt the pressure to be proficient in English despite wanting to be a Hindi film actor. Do you feel that we place a lot of importance on a person's ability to speak the language? The world is shrinking because of the internet. I get messages from fans across the world who see my films. Even my interviews are read by the whole world. While growing up in Gurugram, English was just a subject taught in school and not our spoken language. I think language is an essential tool for communication and so, I had to work hard to improve my English. So, you have overcome your limitation as far as language is concerned. Do you have any limitations as an actor? I haven't found any, but I do feel that as an actor, I have a social responsibility. In our country, people look up to actors. If I make one mistake, I know that there are ten boys in small towns who might follow me. I come from a small town and I remember how, after seeing Shah Rukh Khan's glasses and pull-overs in 'Mohabbatein', I bought the same. That's why I am careful about what I do, as I don't want to mislead anyone. You said in a BT interview that growing a beard or making changes to your appearance to look the part is not method acting. Does the industry tend to confuse the two? It's the job of an actor to look the part and it's not something extraordinary. Earlier, many actors didn't take pains to look their part and probably, that's why people tend to confuse the two. But, now a lot of artistes focus on their get-up. When Christian Bale lost 40 kilos for The Machinist, it was awe-inspiring, but gaining a couple of kilos and growing a beard is just part of the job. Method acting was formulated by Konstantin Stanislavsky. Lee Strasberg popularised it in America. Any actor who trains in that system of acting is a method actor. I call myself a method actor because I was trained under that technique in film school. Having said that, I have no complaints, I just cleared the air since you asked me. I have never given gyaan to people. I put my point across only when I am asked to. I don't want to be the flag-bearer of method acting. As an actor, what are the challenges that you have encountered in the past seven years in the industry? I believe in a certain kind of storytelling and the challenge was to keep that faith alive. There have been times when a film didn't work or make enough money. But, the kind of respect one gets overpowers everything else and then, box-office numbers don't matter. I believe that some films cannot be judged on the basis of their performance at the box office over a weekend. Has the respect you have earned as an actor changed the industry's attitude towards you? Or, do you believe that even today, actors who can bring in the box-office figures are the only ones who are in the reckoning? Films like 'Trapped', 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' (produced by Junglee Pictures and BR Studios) and 'Newton' have got the numbers at the box office. Earlier, even though people wanted to work with me, they were not confident about investing money. Now, they probably feel that more money can be invested in my films. The recent controversy involving Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has had women speaking out against sexual harassment. Are there Harvey Weinsteins in Bollywood as well? Not just in the industry, there are Harvey Weinsteins everywhere. People have to speak up and use social media to combat it. When people don't speak out against the perpetrators of sexual crimes, it empowers them. The #metoo campaign is significant because it gives people a platform to address these problems and the ones committing these crimes now will be scared, as they can be easily exposed. The survivor's silence empowers the perpetrators. Get latest news & live updates on the go on your pc with News App . Download The Times of India news app for your device. RELATED
