Book Review: Prithviraj Chauhan - The Emperor of Hearts by Anuja Chandramouli

Price: Rs. 299/- ( I got the book for review from the author ) Behind the Book Prithviraj Chauhan was destiny's chosen one, singled out for glory and greatness. During the course of an extraordinary life, he transcended the limits imposed on mortals and achieved Godlike luster. The conquering hero dreamed of a united land where peace prevailed over war and love over hate. Princess Samyukta loved him from afar, and when Prithviraj Chauhan claimed her for his own, defying the wrath of an implacable foe, their happiness was complete. Victorious in love and war, Prithviraj Chauhan was soon to discover that success came with a terrible price - trouble, treachery and tragedy. What happened next? Read the tale of the legendary warrior who lives on in the hearts of those who remember his unmatched valor and timeless heroism. About the Author Anuja Chandramouli is a bestselling Indian author and New Age Indian Classicist. Her highly acclaimed debut novel, Arjuna: Saga of a Pandava Warrior-Prince, was named by Amazon India as one of the top 5 books in the Indian Writing category for the year 2013. Kamadeva: The God of Desire and Shakti: The Divine Feminine are her other bestsellers. Currently all three books are being translated into Hindi, Marathi, Gujarathi and Bengali, a real achievement for one so young. Her epic fantasies called Yama’s Lieutenant and its sequel has received an overwhelming response. Her newest books are on Kartikeya, Padmavati and Prithviraj Chauhan. An accomplished orator, she regularly conducts workshops on Creative Writing, Story Telling and Mythology in schools, colleges and various other platforms. Her motivational speeches have also been well received. According to Chandramouli, her work with youngsters in the rural belt helping them improve their Spoken English and Writing skills has been wonderfully satisfying and enriching. This happily married, mother of two little girls, lives in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. She is a student of classical dance and Yoga. She can be reached at anujamouli[email protected] During my teenage days I remember being introduced to the epic love story of Prithviraj and Sanyukta in a movie, albeit briefly. Their story was one that was considered akin to Romeo-Juliet and Laila Majnu. Reading this book, with a gorgeous cover and an equally handsome character now thrilled me to bits. Not having read much about either of them I always imagined him to be an average looking king who set his heart on a beautiful damsel. (Because, well that's how the usual folklore of those times used to be. Women used to be described at length while nothing was told about the man's appearance. This book was a welcome change to that style of narration. Here we have a flamboyant, dashing and charismatic Prithviraj Chauhan who falls in love with the beautiful Samyukta. And here, we also have a story which is beyond this love story which changed history forever. In every individual's life there are some incidents that change them forever. So much that they can actually talk about their life in before and after terms. This book shows us both the before and after of his life, the big incident being his love story with Samyukta. If I can say so, the author made me fall in love with Prithivraj Chauhan with this book. Oh man, what a heroic warrior! Strong, both in body and mind Prithviraj Chauhan comes across as a just leader who was loved and revered by one and all. He managed to reach great heights with his nature and valor. But as they say it all comes at a price. The question is was he ready to pay that price or did it take him by surprise rendering him in-actionable? The latter part of the story forms the answer for these questions and I must say what a enthralling read it has been. The best part about author Anuja Chandramouli is that while writing about mythology or history she tries to keep it simple in language and at the same time ensures an engaging narrative which grabs the attention of the reader instantly. I truly admire her for this quality and have loved reading her works, including this one. Strongly recommended for all romance and history lovers, this is one book that makes you go "wow"! Akshay Kumars Padman trailer offers glimpses of a real-life superhero

'Padman's trailer is garnering a great response | Dec 18, 2017, 01:00 IST Akshay Kumar in 'Padman' Akshay Kumar 's upcoming film 'Padman' has stirred people's curiosity ever since it was announced a few months ago. The buzz gathered further momentum over the last two weeks, when the actor started engaging on social media with posters, teasers and interactions about his film. And now, with its trailer, launched on Friday, garnering a great response, the movie has become one of the most awaited releases of the coming year. It registered a huge number of views in a short span of time, when it released and was trending in India, Pakistan, Australia and UAE. Interestingly, though producer Twinkle Khanna and Akshay had met Arunachalam Muruganantham — the movie is based on the Coimbatore-based social entrepreneur who has invented a low-cost sanitary pad making machine — it was writer-director Balki who insisted on the actor playing the real-life superhero. Balki says, "Akshay asked me, 'You want only me to play this role?' I told him that I was sure about casting him because I could see him fit the character perfectly." The filmmaker adds, "Numbers apart, people really appreciate what Akshay has brought to the table with his sincerity and honesty. He has brought alive the written word very beautifully. It requires a deep understanding of the character to enact dramatic scenes without being over the top and Akshay has done that phenomenally." Talking further, about the other aspects of the film, Balki says, "Akshay's dialogues are very powerful, not to forget the songs written by Kausar Munir and composed by Amit Trivedi. They also deserve the credit for it," he says, adding, "This is possibly the edgiest film Akshay has done so far. While 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' created awareness about the issue of open defecation, 'Padman' Get latest news & live updates on the go on your pc with News App . Malobika Banerjee: Every regional actor wants to be a part of Bollywood

Actress Malobika Banerjee feels that every regional actor wants to be a part of Bollywood. | TNN | Dec 18, 2017, 01:00 IST Malobika Banerjee Bengali actress Malobika Banerjee is gearing up to work in the Hindi film industry. After doing 20 films in Bengali and Oriya, the former Miss Kolkata title holder is keen to be a part of Bollywood. She says, "Every regional actor, including me, wants to be a part of Bollywood. It is after all the world's largest film industry." Happy with all that the Bengali film industry has given her, Malobika says, "Whatever I have learnt in this field is from there. I deeply respect whatever Bengali industry taught me. However, Bollywood is a different world - work wise and technique wise." A trained dancer, she, however, does not feel that dancing is a pre-requisite for Bollywood. "There are many actors who are not good at dance, yet they are doing great with their acting career here. If any story, director or script requires dance from any actor, then they can get trained for it." She feels that Bollywood is a great place to work. "I have already started getting work and recently completed a music video album, which I am excited about. I had a good work experience and realise that talent is the main focus here. If you have talent and ability, you will get work and stardom." Malobika is inspired by Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone for their versatility, and choice of work. "All Bollywood actors are talented and I want to work with all of them. it would be my privilege to be able to do so," she said. Get latest news & live updates on the go on your pc with News App . Book Review: The Bengalis- A Portrait of a Community by Sudeep Chakravarti

Book Review: The Bengalis- A Portrait of a Community by Sudeep Chakravarti

Price: Rs. 799/- ( I got the book for review from the publisher ) Behind the Book The Bengalis are the third largest ethno-linguistic group in the world, after the Han Chinese and the Arabs. A quarter of a billion strong and growing, the community has produced three Nobel laureates, world-class scientists, legendary political leaders and revolutionaries, iconic movie stars and directors and an unending stream of writers, philosophers, painters, poets and musicians of the first rank. But, bald facts aside, just who are the Bengalis? What is the community all about, stereo-typically and beyond stereotype? In order to find the answers to these and related questions, the author (a Bengali born and steeped in his own culture but objective enough to give us a balanced reckoning of his fellows) delves deep into the culture, literature, history and social mores of the Bengalis. He writes with acuity about the many strengths of the community but does not flinch from showing us its weaknesses and tormented history. He points out that Bengalis are among the most civilized and intellectually refined people on earth but have also been responsible for genocide and racism of the worst kind. Their cuisine is justly celebrated but few remember the cause and effect of millions of Bengalis dying of famine. Renowned for their liberal attitudes, they are also capable of virulent religious fundamentalism. Argumentative and meditative, pompous and grounded, hypocritical and wise, flippant and deep... Bengalis are all this and much, much more. With erudition, wit and empathy, this book manages to capture their very essence. Unarguably, it is the definitive portrait of one of the world’s most vibrant and distinctive communities. About the Author Sudeep Chakravarti is the author of several groundbreaking and bestselling works of narrative non-fiction (Red Sun, finalist for the Crossword Award in 2009; Highway 39; and Clear. Hold. Build, winner of the Award for Excellence at the Asian Publishing Awards, 2014), novels (Tin Fish, The Avenue of Kings) and short stories. His essays and short fiction have appeared in collections in India and overseas, and, like his books, have been translated into several languages. He is among India’s leading independent commentators on matters of conflict and conflict resolution, democracy and development, political economy and the convergence of business and human rights. An extensively published columnist at Mint and elsewhere, he has over three decades of experience in media and has worked with major global and Indian media organizations including the Asian Wall Street Journal, where he began his career and held leadership positions at Sunday, the India Today Group and HT Media. An avid scuba diver, Sudeep’s key interest away from writing and travelling remains marine conservation. He lives in the Velliangiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and Goa. For someone who has been in love with the Bengali culture since time immemorial, this book was perfect heaven. Starting with the basic introduction to the Bengalis, the author proceeds to tell us about them in detail. Their uncanny sense of humour, unparalleled intellect, interest in arts and culture, wide array of food, celebrations, customs, culture, tradition and many other nuances of being a Bengali came alive in those pages. I have always admired the Bengalis for their art and literature. It is something I wish I was born into. Imagine discussing Rabindra Sangeet for hours over cups of tea and talking about global politics as if it was all happening in your backyard. I love their enthusiasm for everything and anything, the same enthusiasm I found in the author's words. Wandering in the streets of Kolkata I had seen the way how nostalgia took a different meaning here altogether. And that is exactly what the author attempts to recreate in his words, nostalgia and memories from the rich and diverse Bengali. Backed with immaculate research, the author takes to the interesting world of the Bengalis. In between personal anecdotes and jokes, he gives us a close glimpse of what it is like to know them up, close and personal. Having read extensively about Bengalis and their culture, I can vouch for one thing. This book is the thesaurus on Bengalis. No other book can even come closer to this in terms of detailing and narrative. There were a lot of aspects about them which took me by surprise despite having known some Bengalis for decades now. I liked the overall tone in the book. It is neither dull and boring like a history textbook nor too over bearing and over the top like a news anchor. It is subtle and to the point like a friend narrating their life story to you, replete with pauses and sighs which can be felt through those pages. This one is a must read for all who enjoy knowing about cultures. It doesn't matter whether you are a Bengali or you are not, you cannot help but get enthralled by their stories. Recommended for its rich cultural beauty! Foodie Verdict
