What would a real alien actually look like ? - Unexplained Mysteries

Posted on Wednesday, 1 November, 2017 | 100 comments Would aliens actually look like this ? Image Credit: Alpharetta Department of Public Safety / Facebook Scientists believe that extraterrestrial life is likely to have a lot in common with life on Earth. "A fundamental task for astrobiologists is thinking about what extraterrestrial life might be like," said Sam Levin, a researcher at Oxford University's Department of Zoology. "We only have one example of life - life on Earth - to extrapolate from. Past approaches in the field of astrobiology have been largely mechanistic, taking what we see on Earth, and what we know about chemistry, geology, and physics to make predictions about aliens." While coming up with a specific appearance for any given alien life form is pretty much impossible, what scientists can do is identify certain traits that are likely to be common to all forms of life. "Like humans, we predict that they are made-up of a hierarchy of entities, which all cooperate to produce an alien," said Levin. "At each level of the organism there will be mechanisms in place to eliminate conflict, maintain cooperation, and keep the organism functioning." Ultimately however, only the discovery of actual alien life is ever going to provide a complete answer. "There are potentially hundreds of thousands of habitable planets in our galaxy alone," said Levin. "We can't say whether or not we're alone on Earth, but we have taken a small step forward in answering, if we're not alone, what our neighbours are like." Source: Independent | Comments (100)

Menacing 'Mystery Creature' Seen Eating a Duck at a Lake in the UK - Coast to Coast AM

Residents of a town in England are keeping a close eye on their pets after a mysterious 'sea creature' was spotted snagging and eating ducks at a local pond! According to the witness who spotted the gruesome encounter, an unidentified animal lurking in the man-made lake known as Charnwood Waters in the town of Loughborough pulled the unfortunate water foul down beneath the surface for a snack. Unfortunately, the aghast observer only managed to snap a rather ambiguous picture of the predator, which appeared to be about four feet long and seemed to resemble a snake. Whatever the creature may be, it was apparently quite hungry as it easily snagged an unsuspecting duck for dinner while the astounded witnesses watched from the shore. Considering that the body of water is a reservoir and, therefore, unlikely to contain some kind of prehistoric beast that survived to this day, informed observers speculate that the creature could be an aggressive giant pike. That may not quell the concerns of residents as such a fish, should it grow to a larger size, could easily feast on a dog or some other household animal that finds itself unlucky enough to encounter the creature. With that in mind, people walking their dogs around the Charnwood Waters are advised to watch their pets closely lest they fall victim to what is now being called the 'Lough Ness Monster.'

First Recorded Eclipse Sheds Light on Pharaohs and the Bible

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, historian or astronomer to figure out that solar eclipses on Earth have been happening for as long as there’s been a Sun, an Earth and a Moon. The recent total eclipse in the U.S. shows just how excited, scared and sometimes wacky humans can be when they occur – spending money, traveling to strange lands, wearing odd headgear and holding celebrations. So it should come as no surprise that the discovery of the date of the first recorded solar eclipse coincides with a strange occurrence in the Old Testament and in Egyptian history. The study , Solar eclipse of 1207 BCE, helps to date pharaohs , published in the journal Astronomy & Geophysics , shows how researchers Professor Sir Colin Humphreys from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy and Graeme Waddington began with a biblical event – Joshua leading the Israelites into Canaan – and paired it with a different interpretation of this passage: “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon. And the Sun stood still, and the Moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.” Using the original Hebrew text, they speculated that the reference to ‘stopping’ may not mean ‘moving’ (a miracle) but could be interpreted that the sun and moon stopped shining … an eclipse. In fact, the Hebrew word for ‘stand still’ has the same root as a word used by Babylonian astronomers to describe an eclipse. Moving from the biblical to the scientific, Humphreys and Waddington then developed what they called an “eclipse code” which used data on the Earth’s rotation (and periodic changes to it) to back-date all of the eclipses that could have been seen in the Canaan area. One in particular jumped out – 1207 BCE. That’s the only eclipse that would have been seen there between 1500 and 1050 BCE. Why those dates? It’s time to bring in the Egyptologists and the Merneptah Stele. The script on this stone carving – also known as the Victory Stele of Merneptah or the Israel Stele (don’t say “Aha!” just yet) dates to the Egyptian king Merneptah who reigned from 1213 to 1203 BCE (not yet) – and describes Merneptah’s Defeat of the people of Israel in Canaan. Doing the math, that puts Joshua and the Israelites in Canaan somewhere around the time they could have seen the puzzling (to a people without special glasses and TV astronomers) eclipse. All together now … Aha! Merenptah Stele Egyptologists have never been firm on the dates of Merneptah’s reign and that of his more famous father, Ramesses the Great. Using the ‘eclipse code’ of Humphreys and Waddington which factor in minor changes in planetary rotation, they can now more accurately put his reign at 1276–1210 BCE ±1 year, putting Merneptah at 1210 to 1200 BCE. All of this makes the biblical book of Joshua the first known recording of an eclipse. Once again, an event described in the Old Testament stands up to historical scrutiny. If only Noah had stuck his head out to notice an eclipse when he docked his ark. Daily 2 Cents: 'Hatman' in the Dorm -- Bizarre Anomaly During a 'Blood Moon' -- Silver Bridge Premonition

Daily 2 Cents: 'Hatman' in the Dorm -- Bizarre Anomaly During a 'Blood Moon' -- Silver Bridge Premonition

Daily 2 Cents: 'Hatman' in the Dorm -- Bizarre Anomaly During a 'Blood Moon' -- Silver Bridge Premonition 'Hatman' in the Dorm I recently received the following account: It’s funny how time works. I saw something strange 20 years ago which I didn’t even know was strange until recently. I was listening to a podcast which rekindled a long-forgotten memory. The particular episode was about shadow people - mysterious dark figures which sometimes show up in and around people’s homes. I vaguely remember reading something about them a couple of years ago, but they themselves didn’t spark any memories for me. However, it was one type of shadow person in particular, Hatman, which caused me to do a double take while listening. Rewinding to the spring of 1997, I was a freshman at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. My dorm room was located on the third floor of the rather drab-looking . It was early, with the faint blue light of morning just beginning to seep through the crack between the window and the curtain. It might have been the weekend because I recall my roommate had gone home and was not there that morning. I opened my eyes, and the first thing I noticed was a figure sitting next to my bed no more than three or four feet away. The beds in the dorms were set lower to the ground than a typical bed would have been, so I had a clear line of sight - and it’s a sight I’ll now never forget. The figure was sitting on the floor with his back up against the bed. His feet were flat on the floor with his knees pointing straight up. His arms were resting on his knees casually and he appeared to be looking slightly down. I couldn’t make out the details of any clothing, all I saw was a deep black body. But the feature that was most dominant, and why I’m referring to the figure as a “he”, was the wide-brimmed hat he was wearing. I could not make out a face, mostly because the brim of the hat was obscuring it from the side. I had to blink hard a couple of times to ensure that my eyes were clear, but when I did he was still there. My next cogent thought was that a drunk person had stumbled into the wrong room and passed out - after all, this was college. The problem with that, however, was I always locked my door at night.“Hello?!” I said in an aggressive tone, trying to convey that I was clearly unhappy with a stranger intruding in my room. After a second or two, but what felt like a minute or two, the figure slowly faded away, the spot where he was sitting visibly lightening as he did. At the time, it was weird because before that I had never had a groggy dream-like vision which I knew some people had when they woke up in the morning or in the middle of the night. Twenty years later, and I still have not had any drowsy visions. That morning was the only time I have ever experienced anything like that. Even though it was a one-time occurrence, it was obvious to me that, for whatever reason, my brain had indeed conjured up an early-morning foggy illusion, and I didn’t think about it nearly at all for the next two decades. But just recently, more or less exactly 20 years after that morning, I learned about the ghostly entity known as Hatman. Upon hearing the first description while listening to that podcast, I immediately thought of the shadow-like figure I had seen that morning in my dorm room at Rutgers. The parallels with dozens of accounts were there. The figure I had seen had that large-brimmed hat, was darker than the darkest black, and was spotted near my bed. What’s the probability that my subconscious decided to create such an image twenty years before I even knew an almost identical being existed in the paranormal world? That memory, which has basically lain dormant for the past 20 years, has now taken on a whole new level of eeriness for me. - Keith in NJ Silver Bridge Premonition “My mother grew up in Point Pleasant, WV during the time of the "Mothman" and remembers hearing the adults talking about this creature. Here's the crazy part. That bridge (the Silver Bridge), that connected Point Pleasant to Ohio, was one my mother and her siblings walked across frequently. One night my mother, her twin and their aunt took their weekly walk across the bridge as they usually did, but their aunt felt something "off" and told my mother and her sister she would never walk them on the bridge again. The next day, the bridge fell, and my mother's best friend and friend's mother were killed on the bridge.” Youtube comments, Jocelyn Charde NOTE: I have received a large number of these Silver Bridge collapse 'premonition' accounts over the years. Derbyshire’s Ghostly Choir and Sermon for the Dead

Write for us Derbyshire’s Ghostly Choir and Sermon for the Dead We need new writers! Please contact us if you would like to submit an article for Spooky Isles. K.B. GODDARD reveals one Derbyshire parish’s creepy custom of performing church services to empty pews full of ghosts! In my last article, I wrote of the custom of sitting in the church porch on St. Mark’s eve in order to see the spirits of all those of your neighbours who were to die in the coming year. However, such a belief is not confined to St. Mark’s eve. There is a legend of the same prophetic ilk attached to the Derbyshire village of Tideswell. The church of St. John the Baptist in Tideswell is well known by the epithet the cathedral of the peak, but the village was also once home to an oratory or chapel, long since gone. Ebenezer Rhodes in his ‘Peak Scenery; Or, The Derbyshire Tourist’, (1824), referred to a phenomenon that was religiously believed in: “From this place so long as it existed unseen choristers were sometimes distinctly heard hymning the sweetest strains as they seemed to pass in slow procession along the vaulted passages of the chapel to the chancel of the church where the sounds gradually died away This ceremony whenever it happened indicated the approaching death of some of the most important personages in the place.” It would seem that those not deemed “important” were not considered worthy of a special performance in their honour by this ghostly choir. Another story though bears a greater resemblance to the custom of porch watching that of the sermon for the dead. This is a Derbyshire legend that tells of a minister in the 1600s who was sent to a rural parish. He was well respected and got the church and parish into decent order. The first tension between minister and congregation came when he was informed by some respected members of the later that he was expected to perform the sermon for the dead. There was some confusion on the part of the minister who asked the men what was the sermon for the dead. The embarrassed men explained that the minister of the parish was expected to go alone into to the church at midnight on the last Sunday of the year and preach a sermon to the folks in the gallery. Well, this puzzled the minister further for he had never seen anyone occupy the gallery since he had arrived. But the congregation expected to attend the sermon was not of the usual kind, for it was said that the souls of all those who were to die within the coming year would rise up from their bodies and attend the church to hear the sermon for the dead. The minister was horrified by what he heard. The bishop would be outraged. He could not sanction such superstitious nonsense so out of keeping with the reformed church. The men pointed out that it was done every year and the whole parish expected it of him and that the occupants of the gallery might not be pleased with his neglect of them. Eventually, when the last Sunday of the year came around the minister against his own better judgement and perhaps driven by curiosity, went to the church at the appointed hour. Thinking to himself what superstitious nonsense his congregation believed in he cast his eyes up towards the gallery and to his surprise, he saw that it was indeed occupied. He recognised the faces of some of his parish but one stood out clear to him above all others – his own. Looking back at him from the gallery was his own image. Shocked and confused, he eventually managed to stammer out a blessing to his ghostly congregation. who went away again apparently satisfied with the minister. Sure enough, the new minister passed away within the year. A correspondent to the Derbyshire Advertiser’s Notes and Queries in 1921 states that the origin of the tale is unknown and the village it related to would probably never be known, or else be claimed by multiple locations not limited to Derbyshire. However, by the 90s folklore books were attributing the story to the Derbyshire village of Derwent. Unfortunately, if you were planning a trip to test the veracity of the tale you are in for a disappointment. The village has long since gone, sunk beneath the waters of the Ladybower reservoir. K.B. Chicago Phantom Attacks Couple in Piotrowski Park

Your daily dose of cryptids, unexplained phenomena, eyewitness encounters, paranormal activity, alien beings, UFOs...the best in alternative and cryptozoology news Wednesday, November 01, 2017 The following account was reported to Manuel Navarette at UFO Clearinghouse : Date 10/27/2017 Location: Piotrowski Park, Chicago, IL Witnesses: 2 Male and Female Witnesses ages: both were 21 years of age We were parked in the parking lot of the community center in Piotrowski Park, in Chicago (the park lies within Little Village) at about 10:30 p.m. We had just both gotten off work at 10:00 p.m. and decided to meet up at the park and spend some time together before going home. We were in my boyfriend’s car talking and listening to music when it felt like something hit his car from behind. There was no one else in the parking lot except his car and mine but it felt like a car had hit him. My boyfriend stopped what he was doing and was going to step out to see what hit his car when something large dropped onto the hood of his car. We looked, and both screamed at the same time as we saw a pair of bright orange eyes peering back at us through the windshield. The thing that landed was solid black and was about the size of a man and had what looked like wings that were spread out wide. It looked right at us and then appeared to swipe the windshield with his hand, the fingers were long, much longer than a normal person and ended in what looked like claws. It looked like it was trying to get into the car and at us, we were both screaming as it swiped the windshield 3-4 times. My boyfriend then grabbed a flashlight that he had in the car and shined it through the windshield at this thing. It then shrieked out loud, it sounded like what the screams of multiple people in a small room would sound like. Then it flexed its wings and took off straight up and was gone from our sight. We heard it shriek out at least twice about 1 minute apart as it probably circled the area after which we heard silence. We were both scared beyond belief and I was hysterical and crying, afraid to get out as I thought it might swoop down and attack me if I did. We spend 15 minutes in my boyfriend’s car and eventually calmed down enough to attempt to get out of the car and sprint to my car. My boyfriend got out and escorted me to my car. Once I was inside and the doors locked, he sprinted back to his car and also got ready to leave. I have never been so scared in my entire life and when I got home, I had to go into the bathroom and compose myself before facing my family. We talked about the incident at work on Monday and that is when I decided to come home and look up information if anyone else had seen this thing. I was shocked to see so many sightings had occurred and decided to report mine. I am willing to talk to someone about this incident, but my boyfriend is refusing to as this would jeopardize both our jobs and our families. I am willing to talk and show you the place where it happened, but only if my name or address is not used and we can be discreet about this. NOTE: This is the 7th confirmed sighting within Little Village. This is the first aggressive attack reported by any of the witnesses in relation to the 2017 sightings. There was an attack in 2005 - Chicago Woman Attacked By Giant Bat-Like Creature in 2005 . Manuel did interview the female witness, but will be following up by going to the location and possibly meeting with the witness this coming weekend. If there is any evidence available, it will be later added with this post. This sighting has been added to the Chicago Phantom / Owlman / Mothman / Man-Bat / Flying Humanoid Reports - Chicago Metro Area - Interactive Map Have you had a sighting of a flying humanoid or huge bat-like creature in the Chicago, Illinois metro area or nearby? The entity has also been referred to as the 'Chicago Phantom', 'Chicago Mothman', 'Chicago Owlman' & 'Chicago Man-Bat.' Please feel free to contact me at - your anonymity is guaranteed. Our investigative group is conducting a serious examination of his phenomenon. We are merely seeking the truth and wish to determine what eyewitnesses have been encountering. Your cooperation is truly appreciated. You can call me directly at 410-241-5974 as well. Thanks...Lon Strickler #ChicagoPhantom

Millions of candles are burning at the cemeteries all over Poland today

« Previous - Next » Millions of candles are burning at the cemeteries all over Poland today Millions of candles have been lit in graveyards and churches all over Poland today as part of the celebration of all saints day, one of the most popular religious celebrations of the year. The origins of all saints day, Halloween and similar festivals at this time of the year are often believed originally to be based on earlier pagan beliefs which Christianity adapted for its use, similar to the date of Christmas is the same as earlier pagan festivals. Samhain, for example, was an ancient Celtic tradition that was celebrated on the same day as modern Halloween, although there are even older traditions that predate even this. The Polish version of all saints day, differing from Western Christian beliefs, was started in the 9th century by Byzantine Emperor Leo VI "the Wise." According to the traditional story, Leo wanted to build a church to honor his wife, who by all accounts had led a pious and virtuous life. The greater authority of the church at the time forbade this as churches could only be built in honor of saints or figures from the bible. Leo, in turn, built the church and instead dedicated it to all saints, both known and unknown. In doing so means that as his wife was righteous, she would be honored as well. Mass immigration from Poland to the United Kingdom has led to the tradition enter parts of England in recent years, and in some cases has to lead to confusion between Polish people and English people unfamiliar with the tradition. The polish traditions which are unusual to Western ideas of the period are far from the only way that the dead are honored at the end of October however, with different parts of the world having a plethora of different traditions. In many countries, for example, flowers are often laid at the graves of deceased relatives on either the 1st or 2nd of November. In Mexico, the day of the dead celebration includes colorful masks and costumes, parades and separate days to remember deceased children and adults. Halloween as most westerners knows it involves pumpkins, masks, and trick or treating which many believe to have evolved from German medieval traditions in which unmarried young men would travel from village to village and pray, beg for alms and sing. Department of Defense to begin a 'very bad day' drill across the US on Nov 4th

The Department of Defense in the United States is getting ready for a nationwide drill, and the training exercise will have the name of “the very bad day.” It will be a test of the response of the military to the national grid going down, and it will take place on 4 November. Department Of Defense Wants To Gauge Readiness Of Military November 4 is also the day when antifascist groups have said they will start street protests that will be violent to demand President Donald Trump be thrown out of the White House. The Department of Defense said that it has a test for communications interoperability to gauge military readiness in the event of a grid down occurring that would knock out nationwide communications. It was said that Military Armature Radio organizations and Amateur Radio are going to be taking part in the nationwide drill. Related Articles Historically Bad Bad Shit Happens in the US the 3rd Week of April (beginning NOW) Paul English, the Army MARS Program Manager, said that the exercise would start with a national huge coronal mass ejection event that would have an impact on the national power grid along with all types of communication that are traditionally used. This is to include cell phones, landline telephones, and satellite and internet connectivity. 143 Counties Will Have To Give Status Updates The National Association for Amateur Radio said that during the exercise a DOD Headquarters entity would be asking for statuses from country by country for the 3, 143 counties so that they can gain situational awareness and determine the extent of the scenario. The Air Force and Army MARS organizations would work alongside the Amateur Radio community, mostly using the 60-meter interoperability channels along with HF NVIS frequencies and local VHF and UHF, non-internet linked Amateur Radio Repeaters. An east coast military station along with Fort Huachuca in Arizona is going to undertake a high powered broadcast on a 60-meter channel 1 on Saturday, and this will take place from 0300 to 0315 UTC. An information broadcast is going to take place on 13, 4835 kHz USB from 1600 to 1615 on Sunday and Amateur Radio operators will want to listen to the broadcasts for more information and to find out how they can take part in the communications exercise. Government Has Concerns About Nations Ability To Withstand Communications Darkness The drill is said to be routine and it unexpected taking into account the concern the government has about the ability of the nation to be able to withstand communications darkness that would be brought on by a cyber attack or electrical storm. The drill has been planned to coincide with an effort by Antifa groups to create unrest around the nation. Refuse Fascism recently revealed that they were planning to hold big protests around the nation and they would also begin on 4 November. A post was published on the Communist Party website in the US stating the group had been hoping that the events might snowball and there would be a movement that would spur on the removal of Donald Trump from the White House along with Vice President Mike Pence. Many Want To Oust The Trump/Pence Regime A member of the Refuse Fascism said through a call to action that was published online that they would gather in the public squares and streets of towns and cities over the country. Many thousands had declared that the whole regime is illegitimate and they would not stop until their demands had been met. It was said that the nightmare must come to an end and the Trump/Pence regime must go. It was said that the protest would grow night after night and day after day and thousands of people would turn into hundreds of thousands and then millions. They would put an end to the danger that the Trump/Pence regime poses to the world by demanding that the regime is taken out of power. Some US citizens are now wondering if a false flag is going to pop up in the future due to the coincidence. Related Articles

Woman photographs green UFO over the Great Barrier Reef

A woman from Cairns in Australia has managed to capture a series of photographs of what she claims is a UFO flying just off Fitzroy Island. The woman was making her way back from a sailing trip to the Great Barrier Reef on Saturday afternoon when she saw the UFO. Jenny Morrison had been to Elford Reef, which is around 50km to the east of Cairns following spending a day out at sea with some friends and was taking a series of photographs of the sunset using her phone. On arriving home, she examined the photographs and found that in many of them there was a luminous green dot which was surrounded by a flying saucer shape. Strange Light Dot In Middle Of Flying Saucer Shape Morrison said that there was a little light and it looked like it could have been from water on the lens of the camera. She said that she had not edited the photographs or changed them in any way. She went on to point out that the dot is right in the middle of what seems to be the shape of a flying saucer and she could not explain what it was. The green dot also vanished in last photographs of the series she took of the sunset. Morrison said that she had not noticed anything out of the ordinary when she had been taking the photographs of the sunset. She said that the photographs were strange and looked like something that would be shown on TV. North Queensland Well Known For Being UFO Hotspot North Queensland is well-known as being a hot spot for UFO sightings. Over many decades there have been many sightings of UFOs and mysterious aircraft in the sky. The Cardwell UFO Festival is held each year in October, and this festival celebrates the interstellar links of the region by inviting members of the public to share experiences of the unexplained. Morrison is now convinced that what she managed to capture in the photos was a UFO but what do you think? Is it nothing more than water splashed onto the lens of the camera that is causing a reflection and strange shadow?

This is how Iceland slows down speeding cars before Zebra crosswalks

« Previous - Next » This is how Iceland slows down speeding cars before Zebra crosswalks The small fishing town of Ísafjörður, Iceland has become the first European settlement to road test what is potentially the new era of road safety design in the form of a 3D zebra crossing. The new pedestrian crossing is not a pop-up installation but is simply a very cleverly detailed optical design. In addition to making people crossing the street seem as though they are walking on air, the design is also intended to grab the attention of drivers and to assure that they will slow down as they will immediately assume that there is a 3D object in the road. Iceland trials 3D zebra crossings The 3D zebra crossing in Iceland is the brain child of the Icelandic environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla who selected the town of Ísafjörður for the trial following clearance from the nearby airport and the police service. The incredible optical illusion was painted on the road by the street painting company Vegmálun GÍH. Trylla explained that he was keen to try out the idea of a 3D zebra crossing after seeing one in New Delhi in India where the innovative road safety design first originated from. Since the 3D zebra crossings were painted in India, the idea has spread to many countries including South Africa, China and the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan. The 3D zebra crossing is one of the several new methods designed to improve road safety in recent years after it was revealed by a major study that old fashioned speed bumps caused cars to emit higher levels of nitrogen dioxide which is harmful to the environment and also caused unnecessary stress levels to drivers. Other countries have come up with different solutions to dealing with this problem. In Russia, one town employed topless women to hold speed limit signs and reported some degree of success in driving down the speed limit. Whether the 3D zebra crossings will have the same success rate is yet to be seen. Related Articles

2Hrs of Best UFO sightings Section 51 I Best UFO sightings 2017 ! - [email protected] 51

Watch the VIDEO HERE ! In popular culture, the term UFO–or unidentified flying object–refers to a suspected alien spacecraft, although its definition encompasses any unexplained aerial phenomena. UFO sightings have been reported throughout recorded history and in various parts of the world, raising questions about life on other planets and whether extraterrestrials have visited Earth. They became a major subject of interest–and the inspiration behind numerous films and books–following the development of rocketry after World War II. The first well-known UFO sighting occurred in 1947, when businessman Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine high-speed objects near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his small plane. Arnold estimated the speed of the crescent-shaped objects as several thousand miles per hour and said they moved “like saucers skipping on water.” In the newspaper report that followed, it was mistakenly stated that the objects were saucer-shaped, hence the term flying saucer. Sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena increased, and in 1948 the U.S. Air Force began an investigation of these reports called Project Sign. The initial opinion of those involved with the project was that the UFOs were most likely sophisticated Soviet aircraft, although some researchers suggested that they might be spacecraft from other worlds, the so-called extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH). Within a year, Project Sign was succeeded by Project Grudge, which in 1952 was itself replaced by the longest-lived of the official inquiries into UFOs, Project Blue Book, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. From 1952 to 1969 Project Blue Book compiled reports of more than 12,000 sightings or events, each of which was ultimately classified as (1) “identified” with a known astronomical, atmospheric, or artificial (human-caused) phenomenon or (2) “unidentified.” The latter category, approximately 6 percent of the total, included cases for which there was insufficient information to make an identification with a known phenomenon. Aside from Project Blue Book, the only other official and fairly complete records of UFO sightings were kept in Canada, where they were transferred in 1968 from the Canadian Department of National Defense to the Canadian National Research Council. The Canadian records comprised about 750 sightings. Less-complete records have been maintained in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and Greece. In the United States, CUFOS and the Mutual UFO Network in Bellvue, Colo., continue to log sightings reported by the public. In the Soviet Union, sightings of UFOs were often prompted by tests of secret military rockets. In order to obscure the true nature of the tests, the government sometimes encouraged the public’s belief that these rockets might be extraterrestrial craft but eventually decided that the descriptions themselves might give away too much information. UFO sightings in China have been similarly provoked by military activity that is unknown to the public. UFO reports have varied widely in reliability, as judged by the number of witnesses, whether the witnesses were independent of each other, the observing conditions (e.g., fog, haze, type of illumination), and the direction of sighting. Typically, witnesses who take the trouble to report a sighting consider the object to be of extraterrestrial origin or possibly a military craft but certainly under intelligent control. This inference is usually based on what is perceived as formation flying by sets of objects, unnatural—often sudden—motions, the lack of sound, changes in brightness or colour, and strange shapes. “Contact events,” such as abductions, are often associated with UFOs because they are ascribed to extraterrestrial visitors. However, the credibility of the ETH as an explanation for abductions is disputed by most psychologists who have investigated this phenomenon. They suggest that a common experience known as “sleep paralysis” may be the culprit, as this causes sleepers to experience a temporary immobility and a belief that they are being watched.
