The Copernicus Grave Mystery: Rediscovering a Genius

December 1, 2017 43 Views For more than 400 years, the bones of Nicolaus Copernicus were lost to history. When he died in 1543, he wasn’t terribly famous. The well-educated Polish scholar lived his life as a mathematician, astronomer, economist, doctor, and canon in the Frauenburg cathedral (today called Frombork) about 200 miles north of Warsaw. After his death, he was buried in an unmarked tomb below the floor of the basilica where he had worked. In time, the exact location of his remains was forgotten. Since then, a number of people, including Napoleon and the Nazis, attempted to find his grave, but to no avail. Then in 2004, a team of Polish scientists embarked on an incredible investigation that would eventually solve the Copernicus Grave Mystery. Painting of Copernicus from Town Hall, Torun, 1580, based on self-portrait. Artist unknown, public domain. How Copernicus Became a Heretic Copernicus achieved honor only well after his death. In fact, many of his contemporaries deemed him a heretic. His eventual claim to fame was the idea that the Earth and other planets revolved around the Sun – the heliocentric theory. The prevailing belief, which the Roman Catholic Church also held, was that all celestial bodies revolved around the stationary Earth, which lay at the center of the universe – the geocentric theory. Realizing that his ideas contradicted the popularly-held views of the time, Copernicus was somewhat cautious. Only just before his death, he published De revolutionibus orbium coelestium ( On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres ). Left page shows Copernicus’ heliocentric theory of the universe with the Sun at its center. Source: Library of Congress . Because Copernicus’ ideas were so radical and confounding, the publication was received as somewhat of a ridiculous joke. Without the author alive to denigrate, officials paid little attention to its contents at that time. However, as the years passed, other scientists began to proclaim their support for the Copernican theory. The momentum posed a threat to the longstanding theological beliefs in geocentrism. More than 70 years after the publication, officials publicly labeled Copernicus as a heretic. They also called his theories blasphemy because the concepts contradicted the scriptures. On March 4, 1616, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres wound up on the Roman Catholic Church’s List of Forbidden Books pending “corrections.” . There it remained until 1748 when Pope Benedict XIV removed it from the list. The Copernicus Grave Mystery Meanwhile, Copernicus’ grave lay somewhere under the Frombork cathedral amongst more than a hundred other tombs. Swedish invaders had plundered the crypts below the cathedral in the 17th century, and there was additional damage during WWII. Thus, what remained below the church by the time Polish scientists began excavations in 2004 was a jumble of scattered bones. The investigators reasoned that since Copernicus was responsible for the St. Cross altar during his life at the church, perhaps he was buried in its vicinity. Then in 2005, they discovered a skull near the altar. Although it was missing the lower jaw, the skull revealed a broken nose and belonged to a man between 60 and 70 years old. Copernicus was 70 at the time of his death. Experts at the Central Forensics Laboratory of the Warsaw Police generated a computerized reconstruction of the face and compared the results with copies of Copernicus’ own self-portrait. The reconstruction (below) revealed a man who looked like Copernicus, including a scar on his forehead. ( National Institutes of Health ). Computerized facial reconstruction, left ( Source : Science 2.0). Copy of self-portrait, right (public domain). DNA analysis of the skull’s molar teeth matched with two femurs found nearby. However, researchers were unable to locate any remains of Copernicus’ relatives. Unfortunately, this meant that they had no reference from which to conclusively identify the skeleton. Looking for DNA With a bit of genius and perhaps a stroke of luck, investigators found what they needed. However, first, a little background is necessary. During the Second Northern War of the mid-1600s, a deluge of invasions by Swedish forces devastated Poland and left palaces, castles, entire towns, and churches in ruins. The troops took everything of value back to Sweden, where most of Poland’s riches remained. ( Polish History Museum ). The Frauenburg cathedral, where Copernicus studied and made his celestial observations, was also ransacked. Among the libraries the Swedish forces plundered was a manuscript that Copernicus had owned for much of his life. It was the Calendarium Romanum Magnum, created by Johannes Stöffler in 1518. This new celestial chart would become the basis for the Gregorian calendar that we still use today. Copernicus used the chart extensively as an astronomical reference, and there was a possibility it contained some of his DNA. If experts could find a match to the DNA they took from the skull and teeth, perhaps they could make a positive identification. Over the centuries, the Calendarium lay at the Uppsala University Library in Sweden. Göran Henriksson , an astronomer at Uppsala, carefully inspected the pages of the Calendarium on which Copernicus had scribbled his notes. He discovered nine hair samples that subsequently went to the lab for analysis. Four of those hairs provided DNA results. Two of the four hairs contained DNA that matched the DNA of the molars taken from the skull believed to be Copernicus. It appeared the scientists had found the Copernicus grave, and in 2008, they announced their discovery to the world. From Heretic to Hero In May 2010, 467 years after his death, the celebrated astronomer and national hero of Poland was once again laid to rest at the Frombork cathedral. This time high church officials gave him a formal memorial service, said their prayers, and blessed his remains with sprinklings of holy water. Then his polished sarcophagus led in procession to its final resting place under the floor of the St. Cross altar. Above his crypt, there is a black granite tombstone (shown on right) with a model of the solar system and a large gold Sun at its center. The engravings identify Nicolaus Copernicus as the founder of the heliocentric theory. At the foot of the tombstone is a viewing window to Copernicus’ grave below. Today, visitors to the beautiful Frombork cathedral will be able to find the grave of the Rennaisance man who changed our view of the solar system. Once deemed a heretic who was lost to the world, Copernicus now rests in honor as a national hero. Additional references:

2,000-Year-Old ‘Mystery Structure’ Found in Israel

Google+ The Jerusalem Post is reporting the discovery of a rare and mysterious structure in the Negev desert region of southern Israel. The structure was spotted in a former military firing range area with the help of aerial drone photography. Archaeologists working on the excavation believe it could be around 2,200 years old, placing it in the Hellenistic period of Mediterranean history in between the conquest of Alexander the Great and the rise of the Roman Empire. Aerial view of the site shows the structure to be a sprawling stone complex. Dr. Oren Gutfeld of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority are leading the excavation. So far, the excavation has revealed a series of rooms, stone walls, and underground baths. Several artifacts have been uncovered, including incense altars and other stone vessels engraved with images of bulls and the moon, leading researchers to believe that the structure might have been a temple. Bull worship was common among the Edomite (or Idumean) civilization which built settlements in this area throughout the Hellenistic period, leading archaeologists to believe that this could be one an extremely rare discovery. Some of the artifacts found at the site indicate trade with ancient Greece. In a statement , the researchers underscore how unique such a find would be if confirmed: If this was indeed an Idumean palace or temple, it is a rare and exciting find. Similar structures in this country can be counted on the fingers of one hand. It seems that the building was intentionally dismantled, possibly during the Hasmonean conquest of the region. Archaeologists have found evidence of a large fire among the ruins, possibly indicating that the structure was burned down at some point, likely by one of the ruling dynasties of Judea. A stone wall at the site, with a black “conflagration layer” (left) indicating a fire.. While the excavations will likely take years, this discovery reveals a fascinating glimpse into a little-understood period of Mediterranean history and is one more demonstration of how aerial drone photography is revolutionizing archaeology. Scattered stones and shards of artifacts had been found in the area of this new excavation site for years, but were assumed to be debris until a drone’s bird’s-eye view revealed the outlines of a larger structure. Just wait until remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) catch up with their airborne counterparts. Atlantis, here we come. « Previous - Next » This Single IMAGE is All You Need to Shut Down Any Flat-Earth Argument, Or Is It? The curvature of the earth can be demonstrated by looking across a body of water and observing that objects at great distance dissapear over the horizon, even though the intervening surface is "flat". This has been observed for centuries by sailors at sea, but as most people today never have the opportunity to sail the ocean a more accessible demonstration is needed. Presented here are two land-based observations, using immense North American lakes as the body of water. In both examples, the far shore of the lake and the buildings thereon are over the horizon, and in both cases the bottoms of those buildings are not visible, hidden by the curvature of the earth. Looking at Chicago across Lake Michigan: Okay well, this is the ‘flat earth’ response: Original posted on: https://forum.tfes.org/index.php?topic=5225.0 Related Articles

A New Gigantic Oil Deposit Holding More Than A Billion Tons Of Reserves Has Been Found In China

« Previous - Next » A New Gigantic Oil Deposit Holding More Than A Billion Tons Of Reserves Has Been Found In China The Chinese energy group, China National Petroleum Corp, yesterday announced with great fanfare, the discovery of a giant new oil field in the north-west of the country. China's Giant New Oil Field CNPC trumpeted their discovery on Chinese state media yesterday, stating that the field holding, about 520m tonnes of proven crude reserves in the Junggar Basin, located in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, had come after ten years of geological exploration in the area. The Junggar Basin has long been a major source of China’s onshore oil production and production in the region had already been ramped up to 1.38 million tonnes this year which equates to 27000 barrels a day. Related Articles 'Superbolide' Explodes Over China With Equivalent Of 540 Tons of TNT As China replenishes what is already the world’s second-largest emergency crude stockpile whilst prices remain low, this announcement couldn’t have come at a more timely moment as both OPEC and the non-OPEC producers led by Russia had announced the previous day at their meeting in Vienna, to extend oil output cuts until the end of 2018 as they try to finish clearing a global glut of crude. Upon the news, the price of a barrel of crude leaped by 0.7%. Russia became China’s primary supplier of crude earlier this year having overtaken Saudi Arabia, and Iran too benefitted from China’s ever-increasing reliance on oil to drive it’s economic revolution ever upwards, and if an indicator of China's massive economic and industrial growth in the last 20 years was needed, it is that until 1990, China was actually self-sufficient in oil. Despite being the world’s largest importer of oil, an honour it achieved after surpassing the US in 2013, it is still the world's fourth-largest oil producer, producing about 4.27 million barrels per day but yet still needs to import 8.76 million barrels a day and like the United States, China does not have known extraordinarily large oil reserves, estimated to be about 20.3 billion barrels. The three major Chinese oil companies, PetroChina, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation and Sinochem have been intensifying exploration efforts as domestic output from fading oil wells keeps falling, especially in the disputed South China Sea which has seen territorial tensions rise in the past few years as China has strengthened its hold on disputed Islands by building Military bases and even new islands in the area. The US whilst stating that it does not take sides in territorial disputes has none the less sent military ships and aircrafts near the islands calling them ‘freedom of navigation’ exercises. There are fears that the area is becoming a flashpoint, with potentially serious global consequences. Add the North Korean crisis into the mix and the potential for regional instability becomes even greater. Whilst the Chinese develop further reserves and build up production through continuing exploration, their quest for a more independent source of black gold to power both their industrial and military aspirations becomes ever more pressing. I wish this was legit but his last video looked fake so I don’t hold out much hope for this new video. NMRNG December 1st, 2017 at 11:27 pm I agree altogether with Randy – looks like a guy in a Chewbacca suit to me. Contrast this figure with the composite drawing of a sasquatch in Meldrum’s Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, (in the figure comparing the typically-reported broad-shouldered sasquatch with the narrow-shouldered standing bear), and this looks very little like what most people are claiming they have seen in the majority of the sasquatch reports. There doesn’t seem to be any way to estimate height, compared to the surroundings (unless the guy who took the video goes back with a yardstick or tape measure) and if it’s a juvenile, it would have a pretty erect posture for how most people are reporting sightings of young bigfoots. UFO Hunters Spot Bizarre White Object In NASA Launch Footage

December 2, 2017 LUFOS Latest posts , NASA , space , UFO videos 4 A mysterious white object in NASA launch footage has brought some rumblings in the UFO community. Many believe it is an extra-terrestrial craft that has been orbiting the Earth secretly for thousands of years. The unusual white object has been spotted in a NASA shuttle launch’s archive footage that happened in 2011. Many UFO hunters around the internet are claiming it is evidence of an alien craft. The shimmery white aerial thing can be seen in the clouds. Alongside of it is the discarded fuel tank from the space shuttle Endeavour after it blasts off in May 2011 for its final mission. The old footage was originally posted on the official YouTube channel of NASA. UFO enthusiasts dug it up and re-examined it. It was uploaded again to the channel UFO Today, which is dedicated everything about UFO phenomena. The channel suggests that the strange object is the White Knight Satellite, an extra-terrestrial craft that has been secretly orbiting our planet for thousands of years, but it has never been confirmed at least scientifically. NASA has always expressed a dim view of these kinds of conspiracy theories, and it appears that the agency does not think humanity will make contact with extra terrestrials sooner rather than later. The discovery of alien life may only be a couple of decades away, according to the co-lead of the NExSS project of NASA at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, Tony del Genio. Del Genio thinks that in two decades, humanity will have discovered one candidate of alien life. He recognises that extra-terrestrial life may well exist in places and forms so bizarre that it might be very different from Earth. Your opinion?

Serial Cow Killer Haunts Hawaiians - Coast To Coast AM

Live Nightly 1am - 5am EST / 10pm - 2am PST Advertisement Home > Articles > Serial Cow Killer Haunts Hawaiians Serial Cow Killer Haunts Hawaiians November 30, 2017 Cattle ranchers on Hawaii's Big Island say that a sinister individual or group has been killing their cows in a strange fashion for the last few years and that authorities are unwilling or unable to stop it. Unlike the infamous cattle mutilation phenomenon, which some suspect could be paranormal in nature, these killings are undoubtedly being committed by human hands. That's because the Hawaiian Cow Killer's modus operandi involves simply shooting the cows with a gun and leaving the bodies behind otherwise untouched. As to what may be motivating the proverbial 'HCK,' no one knows, although the prevailing theory is that they shootings are some kind of thrill killings akin to those of a human serial killer. One particularly unfortunate rancher lamented that he has lost eight or nine cows to the miscreant in just the last year or so and that his losses are merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the killer's total tally. Numerous other victims told the newspaper West Hawaii Today that they had also lost cattle in a similar fashion and that the killings have been going on for the around two or three years. However, the true scope of the HCK's killing spree is shrouded in mystery as many in the Hawaiian cattle ranching community have actually stopped reporting the incidents. Their reasoning is that law enforcement in the area have been unable to solve the crimes for years and, as such, a growing sense of frustration has swept through the community. "It goes nowhere," one rancher said of police investigations, "they take a picture and since they don’t have any hard evidence of who is doing it, they toss it out. And, since many of these crimes are now going unreported, police have largely dismissed the notion that there is a serial cow killer on the loose in Hawaii, much to the chagrin of many ranchers. To their credit, authorities say that they cannot pursue the theory that these cases are connected unless they are told about them and, thus, called on victimized ranchers to report the crimes. One should hope that the stalemate can be fixed, since some in the region have expressed concern that the HCK may move on to killing humans should downing cows no longer provide the same excitement for the nefarious ne'er-do-well.

Weekend 2 Cents: Tracks Suddenly End...Body Found Kilometers Away -- Odd Activity at Area 51 -- Pterosaur Eggs Discovered

Saturday, December 02, 2017 Weekend 2 Cents: Tracks Suddenly End...Body Found Kilometers Away -- Odd Activity at Area 51 -- Pterosaur Eggs Discovered Tracks Suddenly End...Body Found Several Kilometers Away Response to a video referencing tracks in the snow that just seemed to end...as if the person was carried away: “20 or so years ago I brought in my elderly uncle, who had no business being in the bush at his age, to track a SAR in which none of us involved could puzzle out the tracks. Even with the tracks being a couple three days old by the time my uncle got to them they still told the same impossible story. The missing man walked 3 quarters of the way into a clearing in the bush and then disappeared into thin air. Unless that man backtracked, and in doing so placed every backward walking footprint in exactly the correct place, there was nowhere for him to have gone. My very traditional uncle said that even if a thunderbird had swooped down on him the footprint would have shown evidence of him being dragged on his way to catching air. That dominant and trailing foot would have dragged a bit, more while the bird figured out how much weight it was actually contending with compared to the weight it thought it would be, or it would have kicked up some snow from being pulled forward and up (even his regular walking footprints up to that point had kicked some snow forward). Those last two footprints, with the dominant foot forward the length of a regular stride, were the footprints of a man intending to carry on in his journey when something stopped him from doing so. Another thing, that could be strange or not, is that the tracks suggested that man had been comfortably chilling for 5 or 6 days in a primitive camp he had erected until the very moment he made his trek into the clearing. He still had an amount of foraged food and water when he set out (water source was a spring in the opposite direction, too). Helicopter, maybe, but there were no reports of him having been recovered in that manner, no reports of any kind of private heli-craft active in the area and he really didn't seem the type to have a friend with access to a helicopter tucked away in his back pocket. One of the stranger things I've seen, that's for damn sure. Had we not found him until the warmer months we would have had no idea about the peculiarity of the case. We would have assumed he succumbed to natural causes in the clearing while foraging or trying to make himself known to aerial searchers.” Source: Youtube, lesterclaypool1 JLB - Beyond Creepy Here are more details that were added later: "This happened in Northern Ontario, Canada near a community called Kapuskasing. The man's body was found about 3 kilometers from where we found the end of his tracks on the opposite edge of the clearing and a little into the bush on that side from where we had found his camp by another search team with dogs about half a week later.'That's another strange thing, I guess; dogs that started out from his camp couldn't track him past where his trail that we found had ended. It was men coming in on foot from a road at the other end of the bush found him." NOTE: Is there a comparison to the Todd Sees disappearance and death? Interesting...Lon Odd Activity Observed at Area 51 A rash of unusual activity, coupled with new construction at the world-famous testing ground of Area 51, has aviation enthusiasts wondering if the base is gearing up to help with the development of a new bomber. Some evidence seems to point to the secret site’s involvement in the Air Force’s B-21 Raider program, designed to create a new stealth bomber to penetrate advanced enemy defenses. Currently under development for the U.S. Air Force, the B-21 Raider is America’s first new heavy bomber in thirty years. Official Air Force depictions show a bat-like airplane similar to the existing B-1 Spirit stealth bomber. The B-21 will be equipped with the latest in stealth technology and is supposed to come in at $550 million apiece. The Air Force wants at least 100 of the bombers to replace the B-52H Stratofortress and B-1B Lancer bombers. The Aviationist blog post about this neatly rounds up recent goings-on in and around Area 51. The post recounts some unusual activity recounted by eyewitnesses in Nevada, including bearded, military-age men boarding buses to nowhere, F-117A Nighthawk sightings, and F-16 fighters equipped with AN/AAS-42 infrared search and track sensor pods following the retired stealth fighters in the area. Cache of Several Hundred Fossilized Pterosaur Eggs Discovered “Extraordinary.”“Stellar.”“Truly awesome.”“A world-class find.” That's how paleontologists are reacting to the discovery of several hundred ridiculously well-preserved pterosaur eggs in China, some of them still containing the remains of embryos.“My first thought was extreme jealousy,” said David Unwin, a pterosaur expert and paleobiologist at the University of Leicester. “Really.” To understand why Unwin and others are freaking out about the discovery, published Thursday in the journal Science, you have to first appreciate how rare pterosaur eggs are. The pterosaurs were an order of flying reptiles that went extinct some 66 million years ago. They were not actually dinosaurs, but they went extinct at the same time. Along with bats and birds, they are the only vertebrates to truly fly. And though these creatures lorded over the skies for around 162 million years, only a handful of pterosaur egg fossils have ever been unearthed. And of those, paleontologists have just six three-dimensional eggs — that is, eggs not completely flattened by millions of years of being crushed under younger sediments. Bright Spheres and Evenly Spaced Beams of Light Below The Cloud Stun Deer Hunter In Missouri River, US

December 3, 2017 LUFOS Latest posts , N. America , UFO photos 3 An image along with a report that was submitted to MUFON has intrigued UFO enthusiasts. A quality inspector for Boeing since 1980, who has worked before on or near fighter jets, has received a photo from his friend showing a mysterious phenomenon in the sky during sunset on 20th of November 2017. He felt it was so compelling that he reported it to the American-based non-profit organization, which investigates alleged cases of UFO sightings. According to the report, his friend was with another guy making their way back to the boat ramp after a deer hunting along the Missouri River. When the sun had set around 15 minutes earlier, they saw an unusual group of lights over the clouds and beams of light reflecting off the river. The bizarre event only lasted for seconds, but his friend managed to snap a picture it. The quality inspector said that there’s a possibility it could be just a fantastic sun dog-type reflection, but he was having a difficult time explaining the “chevron shaped group of lights over the cloud.” Furthermore, he was not so sure about the evenly spaced beams of light coming from what looks like to be the sun shining down in the cloud. The sun appears to be reflecting off the bottom of the cloud, and the beams seem to be reflecting off the river if you look at the bottom of the clouds in the image. Your opinion?

Is creepy Ravenspark Asylum in Ayrshire, Scotland’s most haunted hospital?

Links Is creepy Ravenspark Asylum in Ayrshire, Scotland’s most haunted hospital? Guest writer RICK HALE investigates the spooky past and present of Ravenspark Asylum in Ayrshire, Scotland Here in the United States, it’s common for thrill seeking ghost hunters to seek out former psychiatric hospitals . Apparently they believe that this is where the ghosts are to be found. Unfortunately, they usually turn out to be a big disappointment. However, this is not the situation with Irvine , Scotland’s Ravenspark Asylum, a place where the insane dead still walk. In operation from 1846-1995, Ravenspark Asylum was the facility where the criminally insane were sent to be forgotten by polite society. After abruptly closing it’s doors in 1995, the former hospital quickly acquired the reputation for being the abode of restless and dangerous spirits. Spirits who maintained their insanity long after their bodies were laid to rest. Those who have been brave enough to walk it’s halls have been witness to a number of bizarre and terrifying experiences. Visitors have watched as heavy doors open of their own accord and violently slam shattering the peace and quiet of the building. Others have reported the unmistakable sounds of running in the halls as a bone chilling wind blows past them. These reported occurrences may seem frightening to some, it’s not just slamming doors and cold breezes that make Ravenspark one of Scotland’s most haunted. Apparitions of former patients have been seen as well. Little boy in wheelchair ghost haunts Ravenspark Asylum One of the asylum’s most prominent spirits is a sickly little boy in a wheelchair who has been seen in the physio room. Those who have witnessed this sad little spirit report the same experience. The wheelchair bound child rolls towards them and vanishes before their eyes. Ward 3 appears to be the most active area in the former asylum. Visitors have reported seeing the spirit of a sick and haggard old woman aimlessly wandering the halls. Psychic mediums have claimed that just being near this spirit can make you feel the pain and suffering she endured in life. Not all the spirits of ward 3 are former patients. The ghost of an orderly makes it very clear that you are not welcomed there. Folks who have encountered the unfriendly orderly have reported him rushing up to their faces and screaming at them to get out. He then aggressively pushes pass them and disappears down the hall. Not all Ravenspark Asylum’s ghostly inmates are evil.. Ravenspark Asylum may seem like an altogether horrible place populated by many unpleasant spirits that clearly do not want you there. There does appear to be one friendly spirit known affectionately as “Peek-a-boo Pete.” In the 1960s, a very child-like man was sent to live at the asylum. His parents were getting up in age and couldn’t properly care for him anymore. Shortly after arriving at the asylum, the man quietly passed away in his room as he slept. Peek-a-boo Pete is Ravenspark’s trickster spirit in residence. Pete, has a reputation of following young women around the hospital. He’s been known to peek over a woman’s shoulder and whisper in their ear. It’s further believed that Pete is the one who slams the doors in the asylum, forever playing a game of hide and go seek with whomever will join along. Ravenspark Asylum is not a place for the faint of heart. And it’s not a place for the newly minted ghost hunter. Considering its long history of aggressive hauntings, it’s a place that should be approached with caution while treating it’s spiritual inhabitants with dignity and respect. And if you should go tell Pete I said hello. Dec 3, 2017 Staff Writer
