McCaskill Statement on Family Separation at the Border Monday, June 18, 2018 WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today released the following statement on the separation of immigrant children from their families at the southern border: “The outrageous notion that children must be ripped from their families to secure the border is as false as it is cruel. As the Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, I will be working to stop the Administration’ s misguided policy . The idea that this policy is being used for deterrence and Congressional leverage is offensive. I need answers from DHS concerning the care of these children and their failure to even reunite children before they fly their parents out of the country.” McCaskill, who serves as the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, has announced her support for the Keep Families Together Act , and earlier this year supported bipartisan legislation to provide legal status to 1.8 million DREAMers and authorize $25 billion for additional border security measures over the next ten years, including money to hire additional officers at the nation’s ports where the majority of illegal drugs enter the United States. ###
