According to The Washington Post, the hearing by a Senate judiciary subcommittee comes after the prepared testimonies of Facebook and Twitter revealed that, unknown to them, Russian-backed accounts used their respective sites to share and promote content aimed at causing political unrest. On Facebook, as many as 126 million people may have seen content from accounts tied to Russian sources. Twitter said it had discovered that 2,752 accounts controlled by Russians and more than 36,000 Russian bots tweeted 1.4 million times during the election. Google disclosed that it had found 1,108 videos with 43?hours of content related to the Russian effort on YouTube. It also found USD 4,700 worth of Russian search and display ads. Now, the Congress is trying to find out the impact of those misinformation campaigns on the last year presidential polls, in which U.S. President Donald Trump surprisingly beat Hillary Clinton. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) started the hearing by describing it as a national security challenge. "This is the national security challenge of the 21st Century," Graham said. It'll be a two-day marathon hearing with the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on crime and terrorism. (ANI) Earlier on Monday, all three companies announced that the number of Russian-linked accounts on their sites were higher than previously disclosed. Truck attack in Manhattan kills 8, Mayor dubs it as 'act of terror' Truck attack in Manhattan kills 8, Mayor dubs it as 'act of terror' Source : Last Updated: Wed, Nov 01, 2017 03:44 hrs [U.S.A.], November 01 (ANI): At least eight people died and 15 others got injured after an attacker drove a rented truck onto a bike path near the site of the World Trade Center memorial in Manhattan on Tuesday. However, officials were still working to assess the extent of the casualties. According to the New York Times, the authorities said that after crashing the vehicle, the attacker got out of the truck with two fake guns before being shot by police officers. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference, "Based on information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians." A senior law enforcement official said that the Federal authorities were treating the incident as a terrorist attack. "He jumped out of the truck with a pellet gun, yelled, 'Allahu Akbar,' and the First Precinct lit him up," a law enforcement official said. Several nearby buildings, including Stuyvesant, were placed on lock-down. Earlier, reports came out that police are responding to reports of gunfire. According to a tweet posted by New York Police Department, one person was taken in custody. NYPD further advised public to avoid West Side Highway Area. "Currently there is one person in custody. No others outstanding. All information is preliminary as the investigation is ongoing," the NYPD tweeted. Large number of police vehicles were seen in Manhattan near West Street and Chambers Street. Reuters Summit: Banks fearing North Korea hacking prepare defences - cyber experts

Reuters Summit: Banks fearing North Korea hacking prepare defences - cyber experts Reuters Summit: Banks fearing North Korea hacking prepare defences - cyber experts Source : Last Updated: Wed, Nov 01, 2017 04:24 hrs By Jim Finkle and Alastair Sharp WASHINGTON/TORONTO (Reuters) - Global banks are preparing to defend themselves against North Korea potentially intensifying a years-long hacking spree by seeking to cripple financial networks as Pyongyang weighs the threat of U.S. military action over its nuclear program, cyber security experts said. North Korean hackers have stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from banks during the past three years, including a heist in 2016 at Bangladesh Bank that yielded $81 million, according to Dmitri Alperovitch, chief technology officer at cyber security firm CrowdStrike. Alperovitch told the Reuters Cyber Security Summit on Tuesday that banks were concerned Pyongyang's hackers may become more destructive by using the same type of "wiper" viruses they deployed across South Korea and at Sony Corp's <6758.T> Hollywood studio. The North Korean government has repeatedly denied accusations by security researchers and the U.S. government that it has carried out cyber attacks. North Korean hackers could leverage knowledge about financial networks gathered during cyber heists to disrupt bank operations, according to Alperovitch, who said his firm has conducted "war game" exercises for several banks. "The difference between theft and destruction is often a few keystrokes," Alperovitch said. Security teams at major U.S. banks have shared information on the North Korean cyber threat in recent months, said a second cyber security expert familiar with those talks. "We know they attacked South Korean banks," said the source, who added that fears have grown that banks in the United States will be targeted next. Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have been building after a series of nuclear and missile tests by North Korea and bellicose verbal exchanges between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. John Carlin, a former U.S. assistant attorney general, told the Reuters summit that other firms, among them defence contractors, retailers and social media companies, were also concerned. "They are thinking 'Are we going to see an escalation in attacks from North Korea?'" said Carlin, chair of Morrison & Foerster international law firm's global risk and crisis management team. Jim Lewis, a cyber expert with Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies, said it is unlikely that North Korea would launch destructive attacks on American banks because of concerns about U.S. retaliation. Representatives of the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the top U.S. banking regulators, declined to comment. Both have ramped up cyber security oversight in recent years. Oil up near two-year highs, analysts see more U.S. crude exports

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil prices settled higher again on Tuesday, notching a monthly gain of more than 5 percent, but analysts said bullish sentiment that has driven Brent crude to its highest in more than two years could encourage U.S. producers to export more oil. Brent settled up 47 cents or 0.7 percent to $61.37, close to its July 2015 highs reached earlier this week, and up around 37 percent from its 2017 lows hit in June. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) settled up 23 cents or 0.4 percent to $54.38, still near its highest since February and close to its highest for more than two years. Traders and brokers said investors were adjusting positions after price rises of around 5 percent in October. For the month, Brent was up 6.7 percent, while WTI was on track for a 5.2 percent gain. WTI's discount to Brent has widened to nearly $7, making it attractive to exporters. "The large differential has opened the door on regional arbitrage, driving a spike in U.S. crude exports over recent weeks," BMI Research said in a note. U.S. crude exports have jumped close to 2 million bpd and production has risen almost 13 percent since mid-2016 to 9.5 million bpd. "The problem is as soon as prices move up it's too easy for U.S. producers to add another rig or another completion crew," said Stewart Glickman, energy equity analyst at CFRA Research in New York, "Then they increase production and you’re back where you started." Market watchers are looking ahead to weekly energy data from the American Petroleum Institute at 4:30 p.m. EDT (2030 GMT) on Tuesday and from the government at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Six analysts polled ahead of inventory reports estimated, on average, that crude stocks were forecast to have fallen 2.6 million barrels in the week ended Oct. 27. But analysts said inventory numbers remain high. "The inventory numbers have come down but the five-year average is still around 400 million barrels," said Glickman, "So we still have a ways to go." Iraq's move to increase oil exports from its southern ports by 220,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 3.45 million bpd to make up for supply disruptions from its northern Kirkuk fields also weighed on prices, traders said. Bullish sentiment has been fuelled by a pledge by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other exporters to hold back about 1.8 million bpd in oil production to tighten markets. OPEC's adherence to its pledged supply curbs rose to 92 percent from September's 86 percent, a Reuters survey showed, as top exporter Saudi Arabia continued to pump below its OPEC target and output in Venezuela, in economic depression, declined further. OPEC oil output fell this month by 80,000 bpd, as exports from northern Iraq dropped and other producers maintained adherence to the supply cut deal. OPEC is scheduled to next meet at its headquarters in Vienna on Nov. 30. US STOCKS-Wall St ends strong October higher as tech, staples lead US STOCKS-Wall St ends strong October higher as tech, staples lead Wed, Nov 01, 2017 02:19 hrs * Mondelez, Kellogg surge after strong results * Indexes score biggest monthly rises since February * Under Armour slumps after forecast cut * Market awaiting news on Fed appointment, meeting * Indexes up: Dow 0.12 pct, S&P 0.09 pct, Nasdaq 0.43 pct (Updates to close of U.S. markets) By Lewis Krauskopf Oct 31 (Reuters) - A jump in shares of consumer companies Mondelez and Kellogg after their quarterly reports on Tuesday, along with further gains for tech stocks, helped Wall Street end October on a positive note. The three major indexes tallied their best monthly gains since February. Mondelez jumped 5.4 percent after the Oreo cookie maker reported better-than-expected profit and revenue, while Kellogg surged 6.2 percent following its first sales increase in more than two years. Those stocks boosted the S&P consumer staples sector , which rose 0.8 percent to lead all major groups. Apple rose 1.4 percent to a record high after positive reviews of its much-anticipated iPhone X. The stock provided the biggest boost to all the three major indexes. The tech sector climbed 0.4 percent, building on gains following a batch of strong quarterly reports last week. "You look at the earnings out of these big players and they continue to impress," said Steve Chiavarone, portfolio manager with Federated Investors in New York. "It strikes me that that leads you to a much more bullish outlook for the fourth quarter." The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 28.5 points, or 0.12 percent, to 23,377.24, the S&P 500 gained 2.43 points, or 0.09 percent, to 2,575.26 and the Nasdaq Composite added 28.71 points, or 0.43 percent, to 6,727.67. Investors are also awaiting an announcement on the next Federal Reserve chair, which could come this week. President Donald Trump is likely to pick Fed Governor Jerome Powell, who is seen as more dovish on interest rates and thus relatively stock market friendly, sources have told Reuters. The Fed started its two-day meeting in Washington on Tuesday, although the central bank is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged in its statement on Wednesday. "The macro data is getting better, the market is prepared for Jerome Powell, the market is also prepared for Friday’s payrolls. I also think the market is ready for what the (Fed) says tomorrow," said Ken Polcari, director of the NYSE floor division at O’Neil Securities in New York. "I don’t think there is anything out there that could derail the market from a point of view it doesn’t already expect." Market-watchers are also tracking developments of the tax-cut plan being developed by Trump and fellow Republicans. Third-quarter earnings in general have come in modestly above expectations. With more than half the S&P 500 components reported, earnings are estimated to have climbed 7 percent in the quarter, up from an expectation of 5.9 percent growth at the start of October, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. “We continue to see better-than-expected economic numbers and corporate earnings," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at OakBrook Investments in Lisle, Illinois. "I think fundamentally investors are really focused on those numbers more than the political noise, if you will, in the background." But not all reports have earned a positive stock reaction. Pfizer shares slipped 0.3 percent after the drugmaker's results. Under Armour slumped 23.7 percent after the sportswear company slashed 2017 forecasts. Qualcomm shares plunged 6.7 percent and were the biggest drag on the S&P and the Nasdaq on news that Apple has designed iPhones and iPads that would drop its chips, according to two people familiar with the matter. Shares of chipmaker Intel rose 2.5 percent. Rockwell Automation shares jumped 7.4 percent. The automation equipment maker said it had rejected an unsolicited acquisition bid from rival Emerson Electric for more than $27 billion. Emerson shares fell 3.6 percent. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.68-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.78-to-1 ratio favored advancers. About 6.8 billion shares changed hands in U.S. exchanges, above the 6.1 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions. (Additional reporting by Chuck Mikolajczak in New York and Sruthi Shankar in
