Siddaramaiah writes to Suresh Prabhu on issues faced by pepper growers

Siddaramaiah writes to Suresh Prabhu on issues faced by pepper growers Siddaramaiah writes to Suresh Prabhu on issues faced by pepper growers 18:46 hrs [India], November 2 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday wrote a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu regarding problems faced by pepper growers in Karnataka due to improper import of the ingredient. Siddaramaiah requested for an urgent need to protect the interest of pepper growers and consumers. He also stated few measures that should be taken up; -Stringent measures to check the import of pepper from Sri Lanka needs to be taken up, so that the price of pepper grown in India gets stabilised. -Regulation of imports should be such that only high quality pepper is allowed to be imported. -Strict phyto-sanitary standards be employed to check the quality and ensure disease free pepper is imported. -Every consignment needs to be tested for residues to ensure that the commodity is safe to consume. -Only few specified ports having checking facilities be authorised to handle the import of black pepper. It is suspected that most of the imported pepper might actually be the rejected consignments from elsewhere for high pesticide residues. However, dumping of low density pepper into our country has resulted in the crash in farm gate price from Rs. 650 per kg to Rs. 700 per kg, prevailing couple of years ago, to Rs. 350-400 now. This has caused distress to the pepper producers of the state, the letter read. Pepper being imported from Vietnam through Sri Lanka is used not only for domestic consumption but also used to export from India to foreign countries. Indian pepper enjoys the reputation of being of a superior quality; hence export of Vietnamese pepper from India would negatively impact Indian pepper's brand equity. In South East Asia, vast areas of dense forest have been cleared to grow black pepper as a mono-crop. The vines are exposed to the elements of nature, the plants are disease prone and growers resort to very high usage of chemical pesticides for the pest and disease control. Duty free import of spices allowed from Sri Lanka under the South Asia Free Trade Agreement has resulted in the pepper produced cheaply in Vietnam finding its way into India via Sri Lanka. This has led to dumping of low quality pepper into the domestic market. This has affected not only the livelihood of pepper growers in Karnataka, but also has the potential of jeopardising their future. Karnataka is the largest producer of pepper in India. It is grown on an area of 33,500 hectare with an annual production of 14,500 tonnes. In Karnataka, pepper is grown as an intercrop in Coffee and Areca plantations by trailing the vines on to the trees. Our shade grown black pepper is of high quality and more importantly, it is eco friendly. In Karnataka, pepper is predominantly grown in Western Ghats, where growers strive to keep the flora and fauna undisturbed.

Yavatmal Pesticide poisoning: Maha Govt. for CBI probe

Yavatmal Pesticide poisoning: Maha Govt. for CBI probe Yavatmal Pesticide poisoning: Maha Govt. for CBI probe 18:47 hrs [India], November 2 (ANI): The Maharashtra government on Thursday urged the Centre to initiate a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)-led probe into incident of farmer deaths caused due to pesticide poisoning in Yavatmal district. After the tragic incident of pesticide poisoning in Yavatmal district, a detailed study was done by Central Institute of Cotton Research (CISR) and the report has been submitted to the state government. As mentioned in the report, herbicide tolerant genes are found in the BT Cotton seeds of five branded companies and it is not permissible under the provisions of Environment Protection Act 1986. An FIR has been registered against those five companies. But it is also found that such type of seeds are being produced in many other states too and due to such seriousness, Government of Maharashtra has sent a request to Government of India for a detailed CBI inquiry into this. At least 18 farmers have died over the past three months in Yavatmal district owing to an alleged exposure to a toxic pesticide. Several others have been admitted to hospital in critical condition. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on October 22 visited the victims of pesticide poisoning at Yavatmal civil hospital and assured the strictest action against those responsible for the tragedy.

All unwelcome physical contact not sexual harassment: Delhi HC

All unwelcome physical contact not sexual harassment: Delhi HC All unwelcome physical contact not sexual harassment: Delhi HC 19:03 hrs [India], November 2 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to categorise every unwelcome physical contact as 'sexual harassment.' The court was hearing an appeal filed by an employee of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), who had levelled charges of sexual harassment against a colleague for holding her hand. The complainant had earlier challenged the order passed by the Complaint Committee and the Disciplinary Authority, clearing the respondent of sexual harassment charges. The Delhi High Court, however, noted that "undoubtedly, physical contact or advances would constitute sexual harassment," but only if such a behaviour is part of a "sexually determined behaviour. Even though unwelcome, would not amount to sexual harassment". The judgment also read, "Mere accidental physical contact, even though unwelcome, would not amount to sexual harassment". "Similarly, a physical contact which has no undertone of a sexual nature and is not occasioned by the gender of the complainant may not necessarily amount to sexual harassment," added the judgement.

The Indian Cricket Team Should Not Undervalue MS Dhoni’s Experience, Says Adam Gilchrist

The Indian Cricket Team Should Not Undervalue MS Dhoni’s Experience, Says Adam Gilchrist MS Dhoni gestures during a match © AFP Australian legend Adam Gilchrist on Thursday said the Indian cricket team benefits more than it knows from Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s presence. He added that the former Indian captain’s experience should not be undervalued. “I think they (Indian team) probably benefit more than they know by his (Dhoni) experience and him just being around. I wonder whether people around undervalue his experience and calmness that MS brings to the change room,” Gilchrist told PTI. Gilchrist opined that Dhoni is a versatile batsman and still good enough to bat at any position from Nos 3 to 7. “I think he (Dhoni) is so versatile that he could possibly play anywhere between Nos 3 to 7 and still have an impact. So, this Indian team is full of options and flexibility and MS just adds to that as he has throughout his career. “I am not aware of his statistics for the past 12 months or so but I don’t think he has let the team down when he has been asked to do a job. I love Virat (Kohli) and all the Indian players’ passion and aggression. It’s always nice to be balanced up by some experience and wise head,” stated Gilchrist. While there is still some time to go for the 2019 World Cup, Gilchrist said he is not sure if there is anyone around the corner who can replace the Jharkhand star in the 50-over format. “ Dhoni will know if he is keen enough and committed enough (to play the 2019 World Cup). Whether he is prepared to make the sacrifices to be there,” he said. But then he asked a more pertinent question. “It’s also the case of whether someone is around the corner to replace MS, who can add more value than he can. I can’t answer that as I don’t know. I know there are some real exciting keeper-batsmen around but I don’t know whether they can add more value than MS. The World Cup is still 18 months away and a lot can happen between that,” he said. “I believe that MS will make the right decision for Indian cricket. There is plenty of time but don’t undervalue the experience that he brings,” he reminded. Indian skipper Virat Kohli now has 49 international hundreds and Gilchrist said that all batting records are in danger. “I think every batting statistic is in danger across all formats. It’s extraordinary. He is a world-class batsman . Even if he doesn’t break all the batting records, he will certainly get close to all of them,” he said. With inputs from PTI.
