U.S. probes Ford Fusion cars over steering wheels that may detach U.S. probes Ford Fusion cars over steering wheels that may detach Fri, Oct 27, 2017 20:04 hrs By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it was opening a preliminary investigation into 841,000 Ford Motor Co vehicles over concerns the steering wheels may get detached while the cars are in motion. The auto safety agency said it was investigating 2014-2016 model Ford Fusion cars after three reports of steering wheel bolts becoming loose, including one completely detaching as a driver attempted to turn into a gas station. Ford said in an emailed statement Friday it was cooperating "with the agency on its investigation, as we always do." The company's shares fell 2 percent in morning trading to $12.03. Steering wheel recalls are rare but not unprecedented. In 2011, General Motors Co in 2011 recalled 2,100 Cruze cars because the steering wheel could detach. GM also issued a separate recall for about 150 Buick Encore SUVs in 2013 to address steering wheels that could come off. Last week, Ford said it was recalling 1.34 million 2015-17 Ford F-150 and 2017 Ford Super Duty trucks in North America to add water shields to side door latches at a cost of $267 million. The recall came after authorities in Canada asked Ford for answers in March after four reports of doors opening while people were driving. Ford has now recalled more than 5 million vehicles for varying door latch-related issues since 2016, but the company said the issue in last week's door-latch recall was different from prior ones. The company has previously disclosed plans to spend $935 million on other recalls announced since August 2016. (Editing by Bernadette Baum)

Big Oil's $1 billion climate fund picks investments, eyes new members

Big Oil's $1 billion climate fund picks investments, eyes new members Big Oil's $1 billion climate fund picks investments, eyes new members Fri, Oct 27, 2017 20:23 hrs By Susanna Twidale LONDON (Reuters) - A $1 billion fund created by top energy companies to curb climate change announced its first three investments on Friday and said two new members could be poised join the scheme. The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) was set up last year and includes Saudi Aramco and Royal Dutch Shell. Pratima Rangarajan, OGCI chief executive, said she expected more companies to join and that Brazil's Petrobras and Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) were among those interested. "They are potentially joining and were observing today," she said in an interview with Reuters. Other participants include BP, Total, Eni, Repsol, Statoil, CNPC, Pemex and Reliance Industries. Together, the 10 firms produce around 20 percent of the world's oil and gas and last year pledged to invest $1 billion over 10 years on technologies to curb climate change. Rangarajan said new members would be expected to pledge a further $100 million each. In the first investments, U.S. firm Solidia Technologies will receive funding for making cement with carbon dioxide instead of water, potentially lowering emissions by 70 percent and water use by 80 percent, the OGCI said. It will also help U.S.-based Achates Power, which develops vehicle engines that produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, to roll out its technology worldwide. Financial details were not revealed. Neither of the U.S. oil majors, Exxon or Chevron, are a part of the initiative. Rangarajan said the location of its members was not a factor in deciding where investments would be made. "We have to be open to looking anywhere in the world for the best ideas," she said. The OGCI also plans to help design a full-scale gas power plant with carbon capture and storage technology (CCS), although it did not specify where the project would be built, or how much funding would be allocated. The International Energy Association (IEA) said CCS technology is vital if the target to limit a global rise in temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius, as set out in the Paris climate agreement, is to be met. However, CCS project developers have struggled to bring down costs. There are currently fewer than 40 large-scale CCS projects globally and the majority of these are pilot schemes. Chief selector Inzamam prohibited from owning T10 franchise

Chief selector Inzamam prohibited from owning T10 franchise Chief selector Inzamam prohibited from owning T10 franchise 07:02 hrs [Pakistan], October 28 (ANI): Chief selector of Pakistan cricket team Inzamamul Haq has been barred by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from owning a franchise or being involved in any manner in the T10 cricket league set to be held in UAE this December. Inzamam has issued clarification on this and cleared that he has no relation to any of the six franchises in the T10 league. He had stated that he would not do anything that goes beyond the board policies. However, the PCB chairman Najam Sethi had earlier said that Inzamam would be prohibited from the league, only if it goes against the board's policies, as he is only a 'consultant' to the board and cannot prevented from indulging in other activities. "If any of those activities are in conflict with the board, then only can he be stopped. Inzamam can, therefore, be a 'consultant' for the franchises but not buy teams," Sethi was earlier quoted by the Express Tribune as saying. The first six-team, brief format 'T10' tournament, will take place at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in December. Former India batsman Virender Sehwag joined Chris Gayle, Kumar Sangakkara and Shahid Afridi and will also be a part of the never-seen-before version of cricket. (ANI) SEARCH

Warner comparing Ashes to war is extreme: England captain Root

Warner comparing Ashes to war is 'extreme': England captain Root Warner comparing Ashes to war is 'extreme': England captain Root 07:03 hrs [England], October 28 (ANI): England captain Joe Root on Friday criticised his Australian adversary David Warner saying it was "extreme" of him to compare the scheduled Ashes series to "war". Earlier, Australian vice-captain Warner, on being asked about the importance of upcoming Ashes series, said, "The history, the pride that is at stake. As soon as you step on that line it is war." Commenting on his remarks, root was quoted by Sports24 as saying, "It's a competitive sport, everyone goes out there desperate to do well, desperate to win, I would never refer to it as war, I think that's a bit extreme." The England captain added, "You know what you get with David. What you see is what you get. He's passionate, he wants to do well for his country and it's going to be a very entertaining series." The Root-Warner controversy is not new in cricket. In 2013, Warner punched Root in a bar during Australia's England tour. As a result, the Australian was banned for part of their tour. The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. An Ashes series is traditionally of five Tests, hosted in turn by England and Australia at least once every four years. As of August 2015, England holds the Ashes, having won three of the five Tests in the 2015 Ashes series. Australia and England have won 32 series each and five series have been drawn. (ANI) SEARCH

England captain Root denies drinking culture in his team

[England], October 28 (ANI): Prior to Ashes series, England captain Joe Root has dismissed allegations on his team of being indulged in drinking culture. England is set to play against Australia in the upcoming Ashes series in absence of the team vice-captain Ben Stokes, who was arrested in Bristol last month after a wild street brawl, which allegedly inflicted bodily harm on a man. "I don't think there's a drinking culture in cricket and in our side. We will address the issue as a side and make sure situations like this don't happen again," Root was quoted by Independent as saying. "We are grown men, we know how to behave and we'll make sure we conduct ourselves well on this tour," the 26-year-old added. Root also said that his players would be free to go out and socialise in Australia, despite all allegations over the team. Stoke, the star all-rounder of England, has not yet been officially dropped from the Ashes squad, but Root had earlier insinuated that his team is ready to play ashes without stokes. "We've got to plan as if he's not going to be there for the whole series," he said. Stokes still remains under investigation and is waiting to find out if he will be charged or not. Remarking over this, the Right-handed batsman said, "It's an ongoing investigation. We're very much in the dark as to what's happening, as is everyone." The 2017-18 Ashes series is a forthcoming series of Test cricket matches to be contested between England and Australia for the Ashes. The series will be played at five venues across Australia between 23 November 2017 and 8 January 2018. (ANI) SEARCH

Tiger Woods pleads guilty to reckless driving, avoids jail

[UK], October 28 (ANI): Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods has finally saved himself from going into the prison after pleading guilty to reckless driving and agreeing to enter a diversion programme. The 41-year-old was arrested on a drink driving charge in Florida in the US on May 29. Hours after the arrest, Woods broke his silence and blamed the incident to be an "unexpected reaction to prescribed medications". Speaking briefly during a hearing at a Palm Beach County courthouse in Florida, Wood replied to the judge's questions about his plea agreement with prosecutors but avoided making any broader statement. While prosecutors decided to drop his driving under the influence charge, the judge issued a warning to the professional golfer to stay out of trouble. "This particular plea agreement has no jail time on it. However, if you violate your probation in any significant way, I could revoke your probation and then I could sentence you to jail for 90 days with a fine of up to $500, is that understood?" Sport24 quoted judge Sandra Bosso-Pardo as saying. According to the diversion programme, Woods is required to spend a year on probation besides also paying a fine of 250 dollars and court costs. Meanwhile, the golfer has already met with some of the programme's other requirements, including completing 50 hours of community service at the Tiger Woods Foundation. In addition, Woods also attended a workshop where victims of impaired drivers reveal as to how their lives were damaged. According to court records, the golfer was intoxicated with prescription drugs and marijuana and would be required to undergo regular drug tests.(ANI) SEARCH

Federer survives Mannarino scare to reach Swiss Indoors semis Federer survives Mannarino scare to reach Swiss Indoors semis 16:46 hrs [South Africa], October 28 (ANI): Nineteen-time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer has overcome a spirited challenge from Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in a three-set thriller to book his place in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors here. The Swiss tennis maestro rode the momentum of a tremendous backhand half-volley winner from the baseline down break point in the third set to sweep aside Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in a clash that lasted one hour and 43 minutes on Friday. Federer, who is eyeing to make it to his 13th final in Basel, will now square off with third-seed David Goffin of Belgium. Reflecting on his match, Federer admitted that it was a tough battle and he had to dig really hard before eventually clinching a victory. "Today was a battle. I had to somehow dig and fight and sometimes these wins are more rewarding than just leading from the get-go and dominating throughout and bringing it home," the ATP quoted Federer, as saying. "These are better matches to win sometimes, actually. I just had a tough time really getting into it and he was rock solid, so he deserved that first set, but the reaction from me was really important," he added. Federer, who has made it to his eighth ATP World Tour semi-final of the season, is looking to clinch his eighth title in Basel. (ANI)

Bharat Arun's role in team is invaluable, believes Bhuvi Bharat Arun's role in team is invaluable, believes Bhuvi 18:45 hrs [India], Oct. 28 (ANI): Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Saturday praised bowling coach Bharat Arun, saying he is great at man management and strategies and that he had helped a lot in getting the former's swing back on track. Insisting that Arun's role in the team is `invaluable`, the 27-year-old said the former talks about the "little things" that make a big difference in bowling. "He is somebody who manages bowlers really well. At this level you don't want to get too much into the technique. He sometimes pinpoints certain things which can really improve your bowling. For example, I increased my pace, but I lost my swing. I did not know how to go about it. So he shared some fine points that helped me get my swing back. His role in the team is invaluable," Bhuvneshwar said. When quizzed about his evolution as a player, Bhuvneshwar revealed that he had earlier lost his natural ability to swing with extra pace, but he is happy on finding his form back. He further said that not losing the ability to swing the ball despite adding extra pace to his bowling has helped him improve as a player. "As a player I feel I have grown in the past couple of years. I have improved my pace without losing on the swing. That is something I am really happy about. In batting also I have improved a bit," Bhuvneshwar said. Bhuvneshwar's comments came on the eve of the third ODI of the three-match series against New Zealand at the Green Park in Kanpur. Speaking about the ongoing ODI series against the Kane Williamson-led side, which is currently tied at 1-1, Bhuvneshwar admitted the match would be another high-pressure clash. "We have not been challenged like this in a while and it is a short series. So there was pressure in the last game that we could lose the series (having lost the first match). But the way we came back shows the character of the team. Tomorrow's match is also about handling pressure. We will try to play like we played the last game," the pacer. (ANI)

Hingis bids farewell with doubles defeat in Singapore Hingis bids farewell with doubles defeat in Singapore Source : Last Updated: Sat, Oct 28, 2017 18:03 hrs Martina Hingis ended her career on a losing note when the retiring Swiss great and her partner Chan Yung-jan of Taiwan were beaten 6-4 7-6(5) by Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova in the WTA Finals doubles semi-final on Saturday. Hingis announced on Thursday that she was hanging up her racket for a third and final time following this week’s event, bringing an end to an illustrious career that has garnered 25 grand slam wins -- five in singles, 20 in doubles. The top seeds had hoped to send Hingis off with a fourth WTA Finals doubles crown after two triumphs with Anna Kournikova and one with Sania Mirza, but Hungary’s Babos and Czech Hlavackova proved too strong at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The Hungarian-Czech duo edged a high-quality opening set but were given an almighty scare when Babos tumbled to the ground at 5-5 in the second set while trailing 30-0, twisting her left ankle and requiring a lengthy medical break for treatment. Both pairs remained strong on serve to send the contest into a tiebreak and the top seeds were beaten when Hingis sent a backhand long on the first match point to end both her and Chan’s interest in the competition and her own career. "Of course it’s disappointing to finish a tournament like this. I‘m sure we both wish for a better ending and, you know, winning the trophy but they were just too good today," Hingis told reporters. "Overall we tried to really give it a great fight. We tried to come back. We had our chances, but every time, like even I feel like in the second set when I had that break point, I hit the tape and it would slow down instead of maybe being up 3-1. "A lot of things were working against us, whether it was the lets or the calls. But we can’t be too disappointed about it. We still had an awesome year. Winning nine titles, going all the way, coming here, I think we can be still very proud." Despite the defeat, Hingis will go out on at least one high after the WTA confirmed on Friday that the Swiss had secured the year-end number one ranking in women’s doubles alongside Chan after the pair won nine titles in 2017, including the U.S. Open. "This is definitely one thing I won’t miss: waking up, having to go train, like doing all of this over and over again," the Swiss added. "It's something probably I won’t miss at first, definitely not, having to answer questions in the media. I mean, this is nice when you win but maybe today is not as pleasant," she joked. "No, you guys have been amazing over the last 20 years. I think, you know, you gave me joy and tennis gave me so much happiness. "You have defeats but it still gives you a lot. I think it’s been an amazing journey and an amazing career that I can be proud of. I’ll definitely miss it at some point in my life. "But like I said, it’s not really goodbye. I hope I’ll still be part of the game. We already made plans. I mean, if she (Chan) needs me, I can come and be a hitting girl or whatever at some point. "I definitely will come and watch and be still part of this tour and whatever you want to call it." SEARCH

German federal budget surplus could reach 14 billion euros: magazine

German federal budget surplus could reach 14 billion euros: magazine German federal budget surplus could reach 14 billion euros: magazine Source : 15:42 hrs BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany could post a budget surplus of 14 billion euros in 2017, a magazine reported Saturday, providing more negotiating room for Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc as it tries to forge a new coalition with the Free Democrats and Greens. Solid economic growth and growing tax revenues fuelled the new projection, Der Spiegel reported. The Finance Ministry had previously projected a flat budget, although economic institutes last month already forecast record overall government budget surpluses - which also include state governments - for coming years. The new projection is good news for Merkel's conservatives, the pro-business Free Democrats and the environmental Greens, whose combined proposals would add up to some 100 billion euros in new spending over the next four years. The three groups resigned themselves to further talks next week after making little headway on immigration and climate policy during 11 hours of talks on Thursday. Top officials from all parties traded barbs in a series of media interviews, but Manfred Weber, a senior member of the Bavarian conservative CSU, on Friday said his party still aimed to reach agreement by the end of the year. No comment was immediately available from the Finance Ministry, which is due to publish its next tax revenue projections in mid-November. The surplus would allow the government to cover 7 billion in projected costs associated with a landmark nuclear waste deal and 6.7 billion euros in costs for migrants without dipping into a 20-billion-euro reserve account set up during the height of the migrant crisis in 2015. Pakistan's choice to choose, not choose US strategy: Diplomat

Pakistan's choice to choose, not choose US strategy: Diplomat

[India], Oct.28 (ANI): Pakistan has the freedom to choose or not to choose to adhere to the strategy adopted by the United States for South Asia, a top American diplomat has said. "And again, all of this is about Pakistan's sovereign choice. This is not about America giving dictation. We've described our strategy, we've described a very important role for Pakistan, who we see as a very important country in the region, but it's up to them whether or not they want to work with us on this strategy. And if they don't, as the Secretary said, we'll adjust accordingly," said Alice G Wells, the Acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs and Acting Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. While underscoring US' concern, at the press briefing by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on his just concluded trip to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, Wells said that the longstanding relationships with the militant and terrorist organizations threaten Pakistan's stability. "But under the strategy, we've laid out some very specific expectations of how Pakistan can help create the conditions that will help bring the Taliban to the table," said Wells. Wells stated that US would like to see the strategic commitment brought against other militant groups, whether they are operating or have used Pakistan's territory, whether they are directed against India or directed against Afghanistan. "We saw - you see already the spillover of the sectarianism that has been building in Pakistan over the last several decades. We believe that the Taliban leadership and the Haqqani Network still retain an ability to plan, to recuperate, and to reside with their families in Pakistan. The Quetta and Peshawar leadership councils of the Taliban have their names for a reason," Wells said. "And what we saw in 2014 was we saw Pakistan make a strategic decision to defeat the terrorist groups that were targeting the Government of Pakistan. And with great loss of life, great courage, great vision about what needed to be done, Pakistan has fought that battle and now has regained control and sovereignty over the FATA territories," she added. Wells also talked about the "extremely candid" conversation that took place with the Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and the civilian and military leadership team.
