Starbucks cuts profit outlook as competitors close in

Corrected: Starbucks cuts profit outlook as competitors close in Corrected: Starbucks cuts profit outlook as competitors close in 22:06 hrs (Corrects third paragraph to show that U.S. same-store sales up not down. Error also appeared in update 4) By Lisa Baertlein and Uday Sampath Kumar (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp trimmed its profit forecast and posted disappointing quarterly sales on Thursday, squeezed by competitors ranging from boutique coffee sellers like Intelligentsia and lower-price rivals including McDonald's. Investors used to Starbucks beating expectations and raising profit outlooks sent shares down 3.4 percent in extended trading. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma battered same-store sales at more than 1,100 cafes in the United States, which still accounts for the lion's share of operating income. Sales at U.S. cafes were up 2 percent for the quarter that ended Oct. 1. Excluding the hurricane impacts, they would have been up 3 percent - still just short of analysts' estimate. During a conference call, executives also pegged the same-store sales weakness to slower service as workers juggled mobile ordering, complex menus and other issues as well as soft restaurant foot traffic. The Seattle-based coffee chain cut its long-term earnings target to growth of 12 percent or greater per share from its prior call for growth of 15 percent to 20 percent. Fourth-quarter revenue missed Wall Street's target after sales at established global cafes gained 2 percent, less than analysts' average target of 3.2 percent, according to Consensus Metrix. Starbucks, which is cutting costs, streamlining menus and selling or shuttering some businesses, also announced a deal to sell its Tazo tea brand to Unilever Plc for $384 million. BITTER COMPETITION Analysts have warned that the Seattle-based company is being "middled" by rising competition on the value and quality fronts and that it must bolster sales of higher-priced specialty drinks and breakfast sandwiches. CEO Kevin Johnson told Reuters in an interview that there was no evidence Starbucks was being hit by competition. "We are not going to be squeezed in the middle," he said. But on a conference call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Scott Maw said, "With competitive pressures on the rise, we remain laser-focused on driving profitable share growth as we head into calendar 2018." U.S. convenience stores and fast-food chains are improving quality and pricing aggressively. McDonald's Corp recently expanded its McCafe menu with new macchiatos and lattes and is selling small McCafe espresso drinks for $2. Elsewhere, Dunkin' Brands Group Inc is offering special deals on breakfast sandwiches in its bid to win breakfast. At the same time, upscale craft coffee rivals like Nestle SA's Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia are opening more shops. PROFITS IN FOCUS In the last 12 months, Starbucks shares are up about 4 percent, while the S&P 500 index is up more 20 percent. Its stock has been trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 27.8, slightly above McDonald's but about half that of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc, according to Thomson Reuters data. Total net revenue decreased 0.2 percent to $5.70 billion, compared with analysts' revenue target of $5.80 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Net income attributable to the company fell 1.6 percent to $788.5 million. Excluding items, it earned 55 cents per share, in line with Wall Street targets. Starbucks has been adding working hours at some U.S. stores to ease backups caused by a flood of mobile orders. Meanwhile, cities and states are boosting the minimum wage and a tightening labor market is forcing some chains to increase pay and benefits to recruit and retain workers. The company said results should get a bump from its pending $1.3 billion purchase of the remaining 50 percent of its East China business from joint venture partners. That deal will give Starbucks ownership in 1,300 cafes in the area that includes Shanghai. Same-store sales from China were up 8 percent in the latest quarter, but the broader China and Asia Pacific region posted a rise of 2 percent, versus expectations of 3.2 percent. Airbus, Dassault vie for leadership of Franco-German fighter

Airbus, Dassault vie for leadership of Franco-German fighter Airbus, Dassault vie for leadership of Franco-German fighter Fri, Nov 03, 2017 22:43 hrs By Tim Hepher PARIS (Reuters) - With the ink barely dry on a deal between France and Germany to develop a new combat jet, Airbus and Dassault are squaring up for leadership of a project that could reshape Europe's fragmented fighter industry. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled the plans at a summit in July, burying past defence industry rivalries as part of efforts to tighten co-operation as Britain withdraws from the European Union. The new combat system could involve a mixture of manned and unmanned aircraft and would eventually replace the Rafale and Eurofighter, rival jets that compete fiercely for global sales, as well as the older Panavia Tornado. That sets the tone for co-operation between Airbus, which represents Germany and Spain in the Eurofighter consortium, and Dassault Aviation, the manufacturer of France's Rafale. But there has been little formal discussion yet over the shape of the project, let alone who would take the lead in development, according to industry and defence officials. Airbus, whose mostly Germany-based defence arm makes up about a quarter of its sales, laid claim to the leading role in an op-ed article published on Friday. "On the assumption that the necessary political will is in place, Airbus is offering to drive cooperation with its European partners and to shape this aspect of our common European future," Dirk Hoke, chief executive of Airbus Defence & Space, wrote in Germany-based defence newsletter Griephan Briefe. He described his company as "the lead...for a project of this nature." Dassault has itself offered to be the "architect" of the Franco-German project and Chief Executive Eric Trappier told Reuters recently that it would be the natural leader due to its experience in building an all-French fighter plane. Airbus's call also appeared aimed at speeding up the project as Germany looks to U.S. rivals to meet interim fighter gaps. Germany earlier this year asked Washington for a briefing on the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter as it gears up to replace its current fleet of fighter jets from 2025. It has also asked for data on Boeing's F/A-18E/F. Hoke said buying American could weaken the European defence industry and make it ever-more reliant on U.S. "black box" technology that is not shared with foreign operators, while injecting uncertainty into Franco-German plans for a new jet. "An interim solution for the replacement of old fleets already appears probable. If important decisions are delayed, a stopgap of this type could take on a dimension that would cast doubt on the economic efficiency of the entire project," he said. France and Germany said in July they aim to come up with a roadmap by mid-2018 for jointly leading development of the new aircraft to replace their existing fleets of rival warplanes. Dassault Aviation appears to have been caught by surprise by July's announcement, which cut across its existing partnership with BAE Systems to build a demonstrator for an unmanned combat vehicle, called Future Combat Air System (FCAS). Defence analysts say the French company is in a strong position to be in the driving seat from a technological point of view, having made it plain it regards BAE as its technological peer. But at least for now, such considerations are likely to take a backseat to how the project will be funded amid tight defence budgets, an industry source said. "It is quite normal for industrialists to claim leadership, but it is too early to talk about that," he added. (Editing by Anna Willard)

US STOCKS-Apple soars to record high, lifts Wall St US STOCKS-Apple soars to record high, lifts Wall St Source : Last Updated: Fri, Nov 03, 2017 22:40 hrs * October job numbers rise by 261,000 vs est. 310,000 * Unemployment rate falls to 4.1 pct from 4.2 pct * Apple briefly surpasses $900 bln in market cap * Indexes up: Dow 0.12 pct, S&P 0.19 pct, Nasdaq 0.44 pct (Updates to early afternoon) By Sruthi Shankar Nov 3 (Reuters) - The three major Wall Street indexes came off their session lows in early afternoon trading on Friday as Apple hit a record high on strong demand for its latest iPhone X and an upbeat holiday sales forecast. Lines formed outside Apple stores around the world as fans flocked to buy the iPhone X, helping allay concerns that supply issues might stop the company from satisfying early demand. The shares jumped as much as 3.7 percent and helped Apple briefly surpass $900 billion in market capitalization. The market traded in a narrow range after October jobs data triggered worries about weak wage growth. Average hourly earnings slipped by one cent last month, lowering the year-on-year increase to 2.4 percent. U.S. jobs increased by 261,000 last month after a hurricane-ravaged September, but was below economists' expectations for a 310,000 rise. "If there's one thing I would focus on, it is the fact you're really not seeing the wage inflation," said Heidi Learner, chief economist in New York for Savills Studley, a unit of Savills Plc. "The wage numbers are becoming increasing more important than the monthly payrolls number itself." Tepid wage growth supports the view that inflation will continue to undershoot the Federal Reserve's 2-percent target and could raise concerns about consumer spending. At 12:30 p.m. ET (1630 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 29.06 points, or 0.12 percent, at 23,545.32, the S&P 500 was up 5.01 points, or 0.19 percent, at 2,584.86. The Nasdaq Composite was up 29.85 points, or 0.44 percent, at 6,744.79. The three indexes were on track to record gains for the week, which was packed with major events including the nomination of a new Fed chief and the unveiling of the long-awaited tax-cut plans by Republicans. The market has been supported by largely positive third-quarter earnings. Of the 406 S&P 500 companies that have reported, 72.4 percent have topped profit estimates, slightly above the 72 percent beat-rate in the past four quarters. Starbucks was up 3.33 percent following results. AIG fell 4.72 percent after the insurer posted a bigger loss on huge catastrophe losses. Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by 1,516 to 1,284. On the Nasdaq, 1,435 issues fell and 1,383 advanced. Five Things That Suggest Apache 310 Won’t Come Cheap: Price Analysis

November 3, 2017 Do NOT expect Apache 310 Price to be Dominar-like shocking… Whether or not Apache 310, TVS’ biggest commercial motorcycle yet, is on time? or how many more months of wait is still left? – let us move over these questions and talk and analyse its possible price point, because, in the end, it is all that matters… (** Inazuma takes its face out of the pillow and sobs** )! Let me list some factors which suggest that it won’t come cheap, for sure! Apache 310 Costly Features Full Fairing : Why do 100cc scooters cost significantly higher than similar capacity motorcycles? Simple – the use of plastic (obviously, among other factors)! So, keeping everything else constant, the higher the amount of plastic on a motorcycle, directly proportional is its cost (increment). And for some reason TVS chose the sports version (naked and adventure were taken by BMW) on the 310 platform. Bajaj has unleashed a new definition of Value for Money with its Dominar and one big reason of achieving that price tag has been the lack of fairing. If you would remember, some official from Bajaj said that if they make a faired Dominar, it will be costly ( report here ). So, with a full fairing and sporty credentials Apache 310 will have higher input costs. USD Forks : Many manufacturers are ditching Upside Down forks for the more conventional ones. The latest example being Dominar 400 (its concept at 2014 Auto Expo wore USDs). According to an unconfirmed word I have, only USDs would have costed Bajaj about Rs 3500 to Rs 4000 more for Dominar. Recently, Yamaha’s R15 v3, which was spotted testing in India for the first time , also did not sport them. And then we have Mahindra which is already testing a low-cost Mojo which would also ditch USDs. However, TVS is going ahead with USDs on its Apache 310 which means that they will adjust the final price accordingly. LED Lights : From the absolutely uncamouflaged pics that had surfaced few months back, it appears that Apache 310 will go to the market with LED headlamps, LED DRLs and LED tail lamps. And we all know LEDs cost more than conventional lighting, at least till it goes more widespread in use. That jacks up the price a wee bit more… Tyres : The uncamouflaged pics also revealed that Apache 310 was/is being tested with premium Michelin tyres which are costlier than your regular MRF rubber used by Yamaha on its R3/Bajaj on its Dominar 400. If there is no cheaper tyre variant (there is one for the Apache 200 which comes with Remora tyres), then TVS will have to include the tyre prices in the final selling price of the motorcycle. ABS : At one instance, Apache 310 has also been snapped with a button to switch ABS off. If TVS goes ahead with it in the production version, it will be surprising as even BMW G310 R does NOT get it (adventure G310 GS does have switchable ABS though). Remember Dominar 400 also gets non-switchable ABS (KTM 390s do get it however). Also Read: New TVS Scooter Front Revealed: Exclusive Sneaking Bits Inside Apache 310 Price (Expected) And then we already know about some other costly features like all-digital instrument cluster, chunky clip-on, its racing credentials etc. KTM’s RC390 is priced at around Rs 2.30 Lakhs ex-showroom fully-loaded. Also Read: Oil Cooled 2018 Apache 160 Spotted Again: List of Changes So, knitting all this info together it is abundantly clear that Apache 310 will not come cheap, or in direct words do NOT expect Dominar 400-like shock pricing of the motorcycle. For the more sense-making ABS trim, we expect Apache 310 price to be very close to Rs 2 Lakhs or thereabouts! If TVS is carrying all of this into production and still if they can manage to price it under this figure, we would be pleasantly surprised! What do you think?

Yamaha Fazer/FZ 25 Beat KTM’s Trio of Duke/RC 200 & Duke 250 Combined: Sep 17 Sales

Friday, November 3 2017

Yamaha Fazer/FZ 25 Beat KTM’s Trio of Duke/RC 200 & Duke 250 Combined: Sep 17 Sales

FZ 25 + Fazer 25 4173 units So, against a total of Yamaha’s 4173 units, KTM only manages 3571 unit sales with the complete trio and is, hence, 600+ units behind . Only if we include the 390 twins – Duke 390 and RC390 (which sold 943 units), KTM is able to surpass Yamaha’s tally of 4k+ units. This simply means that spot-on pricing is one of the major selling factors in India (obviously along with the product). And if you think FZ, at the same price of R15, has impacted the smaller sportsbike, then you will be surprised to know that R15 amassed 4921 customers in the same period. This is the same motorcycle of which we are about to witness a version 3 ( spy pics here )! KTM is testing RC250 in India. Click pic to view spy pics Also Read: 2018 Yamaha R3 BS4 Launch in Few Months [Official] Yamaha has been able to find an altogether a different non-conflicting customer base with their 250 cc FZ range without impacting the existing portfolio. And this they have done flawlessly by importing a budget no-frills engine from Brazil and making a half-sporty half-utilitarian 250 at a bargain price. But everything said and done, let us hope Yamaha prioritises ABS on these motorcycles, because at the moment they have said a plain “no” to it!

New India Assurance's $1.5 billion IPO covered 1.2 times by subscriptions: data

New India Assurance's $1.5 billion IPO covered 1.2 times by subscriptions: data New India Assurance's $1.5 billion IPO covered 1.2 times by subscriptions: data 22:06 hrs MUMBAI (Reuters) - State-run New India Assurance Co Ltd's initial public offering of shares to raise 96 billion rupees ($1.49 billion) was covered 1.2 times by subscriptions on the last day of the sale, showing relatively weak demand in what has been a record year for IPOs in the country. Stock exchange data showed institutional investors bid for 2.34 times the number of shares reserved for them in the IPO of the nation's top general insurance company. However, just 0.11 percent of the portion reserved for retail investors was subscribed for. Ahead of the New India sale, companies in India had raised $8 billion from IPOs in 2017. Stronger stock markets that have drawn more investors to invest in equities have buoyed the demand for IPOs with several issues seeing big oversubscription. New India's IPO got a mixed response from analysts, with some like Mumbai brokerage Centrum advising clients to "avoid" the sale, citing falling profits and expensive valuations among other factors. The Indian government, which fully owned the insurer before the IPO, was selling 96 million shares, while the company was selling 24 million new shares in the issue which constituted a total 14.56 percent stake. The nation's top insurer, state-run Life Insurance Corp of India, which is typically a big investor in share sales related to state-owned companies, bid for 58.2 million shares in the IPO, IFR, a Thomson Reuters publication, reported. LIC had bought a 7 percent stake in the $1.7 billion IPO of state-run reinsurer General Insurance Corp which listed last week. HDFC Standard Life Insurance Co. Ltd, a private sector insurer, is set to take subscriptions for its 86.95 billion-rupee IPO net week. ($1 = 64.5600 Indian rupees) (Reporting by Devidutta Tripathy; Editing by Greg Mahlich) SEARCH

Former Trinamool leader Mukul Roy joins BJP, calls it 'secular' force'

Former Trinamool leader Mukul Roy joins BJP, calls it 'secular' force' Former Trinamool leader Mukul Roy joins BJP, calls it 'secular' force' Fri, Nov 03, 2017 21:04 hrs New Delhi: Former Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy on Friday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here, and said he believed that it is a "secular" force. "I believe BJP is not a communal force, it is a secular force and it rules the country..." Roy said soon after formally joining the party. "I believe in the leadership of Narendra Modi ji, Kailash Vijayvargiya ji and Amit (Shah) bhai, in the near future, BJP will come to power in West Bengal for the benefit of people of West Bengal," he said. Roy recalled that the Trinamool fought Lok Sabha elections in 1998 for the first time as a partner of the BJP and again in 1999, was a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance after which Mamata Banerjee also became a minister in then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's cabinet. "I feel without BJP, TMC could not have established (itself) then," he said. BJP leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad meanwhile said that Roy, one of Trinamool's founding members will help BJP expand its footprint in West Bengal. "Today a veteran public figure and political leader, Mukul Roy has joined BJP. He helped TMC come to power in West Bengal, and has been an MP for 12 years," he said, adding that the "most notable feature" of his political life is that for 30 years of the Left government led by the CPI-M "where voice of dissent had no place", he fought against "atrocities". Stressing Roy offered to join the BJP without any conditions, he said: "He is coming to BJP at a time when it is expanding its footprint in Bengal." Roy quit the Banerjee-led party on September 25 and resigned as a Rajya Sabha member on October 11. SEARCH talking point on sify news Latest Features

Got support on 90% of our demands, says Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani after meeting Rahul Gandhi

Got support on 90% of our demands, says Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani after meeting Rahul Gandhi Got support on 90% of our demands, says Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani after meeting Rahul Gandhi Fri, Nov 03, 2017 21:37 hrs (Image tweeted by @Supriya23bh) Navsari (Gujarat) : After OBC leader Alpesh Thakore joined the Congress, Gujarat Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani met Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi here on Friday and said it was at least willing to have a dialogue with them as against the "arrogant" BJP. Mevani clarified that he was not joining the Congress but stressed that he along with all Dalit organisations and activists would go all out to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assembly elections. "Right since the Una incident one-and-a-half years ago and even before, there has been simmering anger among all Dalit organisations and activists against the arrogant attitude of the BJP government," he told the media after meeting Gandhi at a farm house in Navsari town in south Gujarat. "Forget about looking into our demands, they did not even care to have a dialogue with us," Mevani added. Flanked by the Congress scion, Mevani addressed the media from a bus in which Gandhi was travelling during his campaign in the region. Mevani, a lawyer fighting land rights cases of Dalits, said: "We have a charter of 17 demands for justice and Rahulji has agreed to implement most of them if the Congress comes to power." He claimed it was heartening that the Congress leader had a dialogue. "In fact, on 90 per cent of our demands, he said these were not merely demands but our constitutional rights which are being denied by the BJP," Mevani said. "Rahulji called us in a pro-active approach. There was discussion, there was debate, there was a dialogue. He has promised to include most of our demands in the Congress manifesto. We will do everything to defeat the anti-people BJP." The Dalit activist said there would be more meetings with Gandhi. Right now he was not joining the Congress. Gandhi, speaking in Hindi, said: "There is no section of the society that is happy in Gujarat. Be it Jignesh, Hardik or Alpesh, they are all representatives of the all-pervasive anger and frustration." Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi without naming him, Gandhi said: "A Congress government will listen to the people's Mann Ki Baat and not impose our own Mann Ki Baat." PM does not know difference between cash and black money: Rahul PM does not know difference between cash and black money: Rahul Source : Last 20:45 hrs [India], November 3 (ANI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not differentiating between cash and black money. Addressing a public rally here, Rahul said, "Prime Minister Modi doesn't understand that all cash is not black money. The daily wage of a paid labourer and shopkeepers is not black money. The black money he is busy looking for in poor men's pockets is hidden in foreign bank accounts." He added that the Prime Minister has failed in providing jobs to the youth as only one lakh jobs are being generated a year instead of two crore jobs as promised by him. "I don't know what is causing prices of fuel to rise in India when it's going down everywhere else in the world," Rahul said. He further said Gujarat's 90 percent colleges and universities are private and this is the only state in India where 15,000 government schools have been shut. Rahul, who was on his third day visit to south Gujarat today, claimed that the Congress would ease the land acquisition laws if voted to power. He said the biggest corruption in the present government was in acquiring lands of poor farmers for favouring big industrialists. The two-phase assembly election in Gujarat is scheduled on December 9 and 14. Results will be declared on December 18. (ANI) SEARCH talking point on sify news Latest Features
