Stop Friends from Scrolling Through Your Camera Roll with This Android App

Stop Friends from Scrolling Through Your Camera Roll with This Android App Jacob Kleinman, Gawker Media Nov 8, 2017, 08.11 PM IST Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Google+ Linkedin Reddit Android: You pull up a photo and hand your phone to a friend so they can see it. Before you know it, they're scrolling through your entire camera roll and looking at whatever screenshots, nudes, or other embarrassing images you have stored on there. We've all been in this situation (and we're probably all guilty of swiping through a friend's photos, too). Now there's a solution, at least if you're on Android . Secure Photo Viewer , a free Android app that's available now, makes it easy to lock your phone to a specific photo or group of photos so you can safely hand it over to a friend, knowing they'll only see what you want them to. How to Use Secure Photo Viewer Before getting started, you'll want to make sure you've got some sort of secure login set up on your device. That could be a fingerprint scanner, a passcode or a lock screen pattern. Then download the app from Google Play . Advertisement Once that's set up, the next time you want to show someone a picture or multiple pictures on your phone, open the photos app and select those images. Then hit the share button and tap on 'Secure Photo Viewer' from the list of options. Finally, hit the physical lock button on your phone. The images you picked will show up, but your friend won't be able to look at anything else until you unlock the device. That's it. Now you can hand your smartphone to a friend without worrying about what else they might see. But maybe be prepared to explain to them why you felt the need to add this extra level of security, since they'll probably assume that you don't trust them, have a ton of X-rated content on your phone, or both.

This Chrome Extension Keeps the Tweets in Your Timeline to 140 Characters

This Chrome Extension Keeps the Tweets in Your Timeline to 140 Characters Leigh Anderson, Gawker Media Nov 8, 2017, 08.26 PM IST I liked Twitter better when everyone got 140 characters. That's the whole point of Twitter: brevity, concision, a strong editorial hand on the tiller. So I was not at all pleased to see the company's announcement that all users now get 280 characters, which I believe will encourage a certain sloppiness in expression-a slippery slope straight down into logorrhea. Enter these guys at Slate , who developed a Chrome extension that will automatically trim overly verbose tweets down to the original 140. It's the Twitter equivalent of clapping a hand over someone's mouth: See how satisfying? You too can force the world to stay exactly as it was, back when you liked it better. Make Your Animoji Videos Twice as Long With This Unofficial iPhone X App

Make Your Animoji Videos Twice as Long With This Unofficial iPhone X App Jacob Kleinman, Gawker Media Nov 9, 2017, 01.21 AM IST iOS: Sure, the iPhone X has a bezel-less screen and facial recognition security , but the device's most buzzed about feature may just be Animoji . The only problem? Animoji are stuck inside Apple 's Messages app and limited to 10 seconds in length. Thankfully, it only took a few days for someone create a stand-alone Animoji app with a longer 20-second time limit, and it's available for download now, if you're willing to do a little extra legwork. Why Does Anyone Care About Animoji, Anyway? Before we dive in, you might be wondering what the big deal is with Apple's latest gimmicky feature. Animoji are animated emoji that imitate your facial movements using the iPhone X's Face ID camera . That may not sound like a big deal, but it's quickly becoming an unavoidable meme. Advertisement Search through Twitter or YouTube and you'll find countless Animoji videos. It's even sparked a new trend called Animoji Karaoke , in which people record lengthy lip syncing videos-often with harmonies and multiple emoji. The results are a lot of fun, but making them isn't easy. You have to go into the Messages app and use the screen recording feature in iOS 11 to capture longer videos. Then you need to edit them together with a separate program. Advertisement Enter SBSAnimoji, an unofficial app from developer Simon B Stovring that should make things a little easier. How to Download SBSAnimoji Apple hasn't opened up Animoji to third-party developer, so Stovring's app works by accessing the company's private APIs. That means you definitely won't find SBSAnimoji in the App Store anytime soon. Advertisement Instead, you'll have to download the app from GitHub and then sideload it onto your iPhone X. You'll also need to create a free developer account ( 9to5Mac has a step-by-step guide if you need help). Like we said, it's not the simplest process, but it will be worth it when you're impressing your friends with 20-second-long Animoji videos.

Re-order Amazon Items With Alexa to Score Free Credits

Re-order Amazon Items With Alexa to Score Free Credits Kristin Wong, Gawker Media Nov 8, 2017, 11.36 PM IST , and plan on doing a good chunk of your holiday spending on Amazon , you may as well earn some extra store credit in the process . Kyle James at Rather Be Shopping tipped us off to a few ways you can "hack" Alexa and get free Amazon credits: "Shoppers don't know about it simply because Amazon really doesn't advertise it," he told us. "I couldn't find a link to either Alexa discount from their homepage." First, you can get a $10 Amazon credit when you re-order any item over ten bucks with your Amazon Alexa . This doesn't have to be something you've ordered using Alexa, either. It can be anything from your Amazon order history. Advertisement In his post, James explains exactly how to do this, because you do have to ask Alexa to "order more Item X." When you do, you should see a $10 credit in your Amazon account within the next few days. You can also earn more credits by ordering a gift card using Alexa and then reloading that gift card later. "For what amounts to about 3-4 minutes of your time you can score a quick $15 in Amazon credits," James said. "It's free money...so after you ask Alexa to talk like Yoda, why not let her show you the money too."

How to Hide the iPhone X's Ugly Notch With a Custom Wallpaper

How to Hide the iPhone X's Ugly Notch With a Custom Wallpaper Jacob Kleinman, Gawker Media Nov 9, 2017, 02.11 AM IST Gizmodo /Alex Cranz The iPhone X design might be perfect if it wasn't for that notch. The bit of bezel at the top of the screen may be necessary for Apple 's new Face ID to work, but that doesn't mean we don't hate the way it looks. If you'd rather have a regular black bar along the top of the iPhone X instead of an awkward notch, there's a simple solution: just get a custom wallpaper designed to hide the remaining bit of bezel. These wallpapers work by adding a virtual black bezel on either side of the notch so you don't even notice it. Advertisement There are a couple of different options, currently, so here's what you need to know about both (courtesy of Gadget Hacks ). Create Your New iPhone X Wallpaper With Notcho Notcho Notcho is a new app that creates special wallpapers designed to hide the iPhone X notch. It comes with 11 pre-selected options to choose from, but you can also create your own using any image you want. Just select 'Import' and pick an image from your camera roll. Then select 'Save' and Notcho will crop your picture to fit the iPhone X screen. Advertisement This app is free in the App Store, but there is a catch. Every wallpaper you use will come with a branded Notcho watermark in the bottom right corner. If you want to remove it you'll have to spend $1.99 on an in-app purchase. Get Your Own Wallpapers For Free With No Water Mark You can use Photoshop to create a custom wallpaper for the iPhone X/ Gadget Hacks If you'd rather not pay but you don't want to use branded wallpaper on your iPhone X, you're in luck. Gadget Hacks whipped up seven notch-hiding wallpapers of its own, which you can find right here . Just select the images you want and download them. Then hit 'Share' while viewing any of those images and select 'Save Image' to store it on your iPhone. Advertisement If you still can't find a wallpaper you like, you can always create your own with Photoshop. You'll need to download a special stencil first . Then open the file, pick the top layer and drag an image into Photoshop. It should crop automatically to fit the iPhone X, though you may have to do some resizing if the picture you chose doesn't fit. How To Set Up Your New Wallpaper Once you've found your new wallpaper and saved it to your iPhone X, you still need to set your new wallpaper. To do that, just launch the Photos app and select the image you created or downloaded. Then hit 'Share' and tap on 'Use as Wallpaper.' When you see the option to choose 'Still' or 'Perspective,' pick 'Still' so that the bezels line up. Then just hit 'Set' and you'll be asked if you want to use it as your home screen, lock screen or both. Advertisement Congrats, now you can pretend the iPhone X notch doesn't exist-at least when you're looking at the home screen or lock screen. This won't work for individual apps, though hopefully we'll see more and more developers find ways to make that bezel a little less noticeable.

Don't Blame Others If You Refuse to Help Them Learn

Don't Blame Others If You Refuse to Help Them Learn Patrick Allan, Gawker Media Nov 9, 2017, 03.41 AM IST Welcome back to Mid-Week Meditations , Lifehacker's weekly dip into the pool of stoic wisdom, and a guide to using its waters to reflect on and improve your life. This week's selection comes from my favorite stoic, Marcus Aurelius. He suggests you hold off on blaming people who make mistakes, especially if you're not willing to guide them: "If he is going wrong, teach him kindly and show him what he has failed to see. If you can't do that, blame yourself - or perhaps not even yourself." Meditations, 10.4 Here's another translation: "If someone is slipping up, kindly correct them and point out what they missed. But if you can't, blame yourself-or no one." Meditations, 10.4 What It Means People make mistakes. When they do make a mistake, and you feel the need to point it out, at least do them the kindness of showing them how to avoid it next time. But if you point fingers and refuse to teach, the blame is on you. That's your failure , not theirs, because you're choosing to neglect an opportunity to do good. Of course, if you can't help them learn, no one is to blame. The mistake they made could have easily been made by you. What to Take From It Blame is good for no one. It makes the blamed feel disheartened and unwilling to try again, it makes the blamer feel self-righteous and free of fault, and it cultivates a culture of blame shifting for everyone else. Its a selfish act of self-preservation designed to lower people's opinions of someone else so that you might look better in comparison. In an environment where learning often comes with trial and error, which is most work environments, the feeling of failure is often punishment enough. There's no need to point fingers and amplify it. Besides, when you work on a team, one person's failure is everyone's. It's still okay to point out someone's missteps. After all, many people don't even realize they're making mistakes until someone does so, and they need to be told so they can get better. But if you're going to highlight someone's faults, you should be willing to show them how to avoid them in the future. Guidance helps them learn and encourages them to try again, and through teaching , you further your own understanding of the subject matter and solidify your position as a positive, useful member of the team. So don't blame-teach. If you can't teach because you are also learning, know your place and just worry about yourself.

I'm Comedian Nicole Drespel, and This Is How I Work

I'm Comedian Nicole Drespel, and This Is How I Work Nick Douglas, Gawker Media Nov 9, 2017, 01.36 AM IST Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Google+ Linkedin Reddit Nicole Drespel on Broad City There are maybe ten things in the world that deserve the title "best-kept secret," and one of them is comedian Nicole Drespel. A legendary improv coach and teacher at the Upright Citizens Brigade, Nicole has appeared in Broad City and 30 Rock and written for The Chris Gethard Show on Fusion (owned by Univision, Lifehacker's parent company) and Wet Hot American Summer on Netflix. She currently hosts the podcast InBox , where she and co-host Matt Stroup dig through their guests' email and chats. We asked her how she manages her own inbox, and all the other parts of juggling a career Current Gig: InBox podcast host, writer for The Chris Gethard Show , UCB One word that best describes how you work: Lists Current mobile device: iPhones 5S Current computer: Macbook Air First of all, tell me a little about your background and how you got to where you are today. I graduated from a women's college with a degree in English Literature and Medieval History. Then I moved back to New York where I spent a year in my parents' basement reading Harry Potter and the Collected Works of William Shakespeare. I started hanging around the UCB Theatre where I took the very privileged path of student to performer to teacher to freelancer to paid writer to underemployed person back to paid writer and podcast host. Take us through a recent workday. I'll wake up and maybe spend a half-hour doing a lackluster stationary bike ride at the gym. Then I'll try to get some work done which means sending my co-host, Matt Stroup, dramatic text messages demanding he respond to my emails. If it's a show day at The Chris Gethard Show I'll head in a little after noon, go to our production meeting, then we do whatever work needs to be done before rehearsal, then rehearsal, then a dinner break where we do last minute work and I follow our internet liaison, Bethany Hall, around the studio filming Instagram bits on her phone, then the 11pm LIVE show, then some meetings and home again! In addition to your writing and performing career, you're a well-known teacher and coach at UCB. How has each informed the other? I think running a good improv class involves being able to take the emotional temperature of a room and then adjust accordingly so that everyone feels supported and optimistic. That approach gets flak from "tougher" coaches, but I think the work is better in those conditions. Even if I'm wrong, someday we'll all die so screw it, we might as well enjoy the process. Room-reading is equally valuable on a set and in a writers' room. Does working in comedy "ruin" watching comedy? Yes, it does. If something is really good I think "Christ, why bother?" And if something isn't good I think "Christ, this whole system is rigged." Or I'll worry that I'm not working hard enough, fast enough, or enough enough. What apps, gadgets, or tools can't you live without? Pocket is the most wonderful app ever invented. It's makes it easy to keep track of articles I want to read. And it syncs across all your devices. Advertisement When I'm writing, I'll use Diptic to create collages to capture the essence of a script or story. I also swear by Google Docs, especially spreadsheets. For everything. We have a meticulously maintained shared doc tracking every upcoming InBox guest and every ask we have out. Then Instagram for fun and Starbucks for necessity. What's your workspace setup like? Minimalist. MacBook, headphones, notebook. When I'm not staffed on a show, I tend to do my writing in coffee shops because I feel invisible and removed from other life concerns. Also, I love coffee and treats. What's your best time-saving shortcut or life hack? Mobile ordering! It hurts my heart because of the lack of human interaction and the realization that we may all eventually be replaced by computers. But it calms my other heart because of the time it saves. I have two hearts. I'm a Time Lady. How do you keep track of what you have to do? I have a lovely little Moleskine notebook where I write my daily to-do list. When I'm at work I'll very leave concise post-its all over my desk. They get tossed as I complete tasks. And I aim for Inbox Zero so that when I open my email, the only thing I see are things that need to be addressed. A cluttered inbox leads me to make some very quick assumptions about our podcast guests. What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What's your secret? I'm generally aggressive about editing my emails so they only contain vital information and are considerate of other people's time. Or at least I try. Hours spent reading other people's emails for the podcast might be inspiring me to leave behind a more efficient digital footprint. How do you recharge? What do you do when you want to forget about work? To recharge, I clean my apartment. I'm not a super neat person but if I clean I feel like I am capable and strong and virtuous and in control of my life. Advertisement I will re-watch episodes of Once Upon A Time for the tenth or eleventh time. I also love, love, love watching YouTube "Get Unready With Me" videos. These feature ambitious, driven, entrepreneurial lifestyle vloggers taking off their makeup and lighting candles and showing how they wind down at the end of the day. I can't believe this is a genre of video and I love every one of them. What's your favorite side project? Book club! For the last three years I've been in a book club that meets monthly and is very disciplined about discussing the book and THEN getting drunk and playing relationship-destroying games. Fill in the blank: I'd love to see ____

Tech Mahindra to train 10,000 employees on automation

Tech Mahindra to train 10,000 employees on automation www.techgig.com | techgig.com Nov 8, 2017, 02.51 PM IST Top IT Companies Image Credit Continue reading Tech Mahindra , one among the topmost IT firms in the country will train an additional 10,000 employees on automation in the ongoing year as the country's fifth largest IT firm expands its focus on new technologies to enhance productivity and stay ahead in competition. Automation is an area where Tech Mahindra is heavily focused on with an aim of making company competitive, said Tech Mahindra Vice Chairman Vineet Nayyar. ''So far around 11,000 employees have been training in automation technologies while company intends to train an additional 10,000 associates during the year," he added. Nayyar also said that during the first two quarters, Tech Mahindra generated "productivity worth over 3,200 persons in different projects", encompassing close to half of the employees based in IT. At the end of September 2017 quarter, Tech Mahindra had a total employee strength of 1,17,225 people. Among these, 75,587 people were in the software business, while 35,287 were in BPO operations. The company has also said that by the end of September quarter, close to 70 percent of the total employees, starting from delivery to sales and support -- have garnered training in different modules of next generation digital technologies like Big Data/ analytics, cloud, mobility, Internet of Things (IoT), AR-VR, machine learning, robotics and Bitcoin. By the end of FY18, the company aims to take this number to close to 80 percent. IT companies across India are betting big on technologies like automation and artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency and productivity. While automation is estimated to garner cost benefits for clients, there are also concerns that an increased deployment of automation could lead to job losses. Earlier this year, there were reports that thousands of employees could be asked to leave from top companies like Wipro, Infosys and Cognizant. The reports were rebutted by industry body Nasscom which said that the industry will recruit about 1.5 lakh people this year on "net" basis , although technology professionals will have to re-skill themselves to stay in the game. It had also pointed out that new opportunities are being generated in areas like tech start-ups, e-commerce, Digital India and digital payments and about 3 million new jobs are expected to emerge by the year 2025. The company has registered a profit of INR 836.2 crore for the quarter ended September, with a hike of 5 percent from INR 798.6 crore in the previous quarter, helped by enhancement in employee productivity and absence of visa costs to the United States. Tech Mahindra's margins which stood as the the lowest in the industry, touched 14.5 percent - a rise of 180 basis points from the first quarter. The revenue soared 3.7 percent to INR 7606.4 crore. On a consistent currency basis, the revenue soared by 2.3 percent. Margins have improved but we have a long way to go. I am not exactly a happy soul about the current margin levels but they are moving in a positive direction," said the company's CEO CP Gurnani at a press conference. Rimit
