This CDC App Tells You Which Vaccines You Need to See the World

This CDC App Tells You Which Vaccines You Need to See the World Patrick Allan, 03.36 AM IST Photo by Keith Parker . iOS/Google: Different countries around the world have unique foods, styles, and cultures, but they also have their own diseases. That's why it's important you get vaccinated four to six weeks before you travel internationally. If you're getting ready to jet set around the world, the Centers for Disease Control's TravWell app can help you prepare your immune system. Available for iOS and Android , CDC TravWell gives you clear instruction about what you need based on where you're going and when. After downloading the app, you can build a trip that can include multiple destinations. Then TravWell will give you vaccine requirements and recommendations for each location, as well as a checklist of other things you should do before you take off. Say, for example, you were planning a trip to Thailand. Once you put in your travel dates, you'll see four tabs. The first tab, CDC Vaccines & Medicines Advice, will recommend you get vaccines for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Malaria, and Cholera, in addition to being up on your routine vaccinations. The next tab, To Do List, gives you a helpful, customizable checklist of things to do before and during your trip. You'll see tips like "See health care provider before trip," "Register with U.S. Department of State," "Give itinerary to emergency contact," and "Use insect repellent." The Packing List tab is a customizable checklist of medicines and medical supplies you should consider packing and bringing along with you on your journey. Lastly, the Documents tab is a place where you can save and organize photos or scans of your important travel documents. When you get your immunizations, TravWell lets you keep a record of them, along with records of any medications you'd like to track. You can even set reminders within the app to keep you up to date on vaccine booster doses, or ping you when it's time to take certain medicines while you're traveling. And best of all, TravWell works whether you're online or not. As long as you can get power to your smartphone, you'll be able to access your records and checklists, read up on CDC recommendations, and find phone numbers for emergency services, wherever you are in the world. You can download TravWell for your iOS or Android device at the links below.

How to Create a Virtual Home Button on the iPhone X That Really Works

How to Create a Virtual Home Button on the iPhone X That Really Works Jacob Kleinman, Gawker Media Nov 9, 2017, 07.06 PM IST Using the iPhone X means relearning almost everything you knew about navigating in iOS. That's because Apple removed the Home button , replacing that nice tactile input with a bunch of new swipes and gestures. If your muscle memory has you reaching for a Home button that's no longer there, or you just miss it, there's a solution. PhoneArena came up with a clever trick for bringing back the Home button on the iPhone X-sort of. How to Add a Home Button to the iPhone X PhoneArena's trick makes use of Apple's AssistiveTouch feature, which was created for people with motor skill impairments who can't use the iPhone's physical buttons. It's also useful if your power or home button breaks and you need another way to navigate. Advertisement Assistive Touch puts a small circular button anywhere on your screen at all times. You can press it to access a bunch of different functions, like turning on voice controls, checking your notifications or returning to the home screen. In this case "Home" is the only option we want. To set up Assistive Touch, go into Settings, then General and then Accessibility. Select AssistiveTouch and toggle it on. Then select "Customize Top Level Menu" and tap on the minus sign until there's only one icon remaining. Tap on that final icon to pull up a list of options and hit "Home." Finally, go back to AssistiveTouch settings, tap on "Idle Opacity" and put it at 20 percent so the virtual button won't be a distraction when it's not being used. Now that you've created your virtual home button, just drag it to the bottom center of the iPhone X display and leave it there. The next time you automatically reach for the Home button out of habit, it will actually work.

Sean Parker on Facebook: ‘God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains’ - Funny Lovely Internet

0 SHARE Sean Parker, of Napster fame and an early investor in Facebook, says the founders of the social networking site knew they were creating something people would become addicted to, reports Axios . “God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains,” he said at an Axios event in Philadelphia, noting that he has become a “conscientious objector” on social media, even though he still maintains a presence on Twitter and Facebook . (He is currently the founder and chair of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.) Parker says the social networking site exploits human psychological vulnerabilities through a validation feedback loop that gets people to constantly post to get even more likes and comments. “It’s exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you’re exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology,” he said. “The inventors, creators — it’s me, it’s Mark [Zuckerberg], it’s Kevin Systrom on Instagram, it’s all of these people — understood this consciously. And we did it anyway.” In other words, using Facebook is like junk food: you get instant gratification when you post for likes and comments. It’s quick and easy but has little substance. Parker says that the thought process when building Facebook was to figure out “how do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?” The comments are a little ironic given the billions Parker has made from being an early investor in Facebook. It’s not the first time a tech entrepreneur has disavowed something they’ve created or been involved with — Programmer Ethan Zuckerman famously penned an apology letter for unleashing pop-up ads into the world several years ago. Public sentiment is also turning against Facebook, hit by issues surrounding fake news and Russian election posts that reached 126 million people. A recent deep dive by The Verge into technology companies found Facebook to be one of the most divisive. More people say they distrust it more than Amazon, Google, Apple, or Microsoft, though a majority of people said they would still care very much if Facebook went away. “The unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people … it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other,” Parker said.

TRAI Hopes To Share New Telecom Policy Inputs With DoT In December

The regulator TRAI plans to share with the Telecom Department next month its inputs on key aspects that need to be considered as part of the New Telecom Policy (NTP), according to a senior official of the watchdog. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will do an “internal brainstorming” on the emerging requirements of the sector for 2020-2022 as also the network, device ecosystem and security related needs that are expected to come up, said the official who did not wish to be named. The idea, the official said, is to look at an overarching framework that would enable a holistic growth of the sector, and the support infrastructure required to facilitate the same. The official said that TRAI will move “quickly” on the exercise, and is targeting mid- to end-December for sharing its feedback. “TRAI will be sharing important issues that require attention in NTP,” the official said. Yesterday, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha had said the Telecom Ministry (DoT) hopes to finalize the new telecom policy by February and would release its draft by December-end for public comments. The policy in the offing is expected to focus on areas such as internet for all, next-generation technologies (like 5G and Internet of Things), skills development, and security, among others. - BGR Twitter

RSA CTO Ramzan on Taking a Risk-Based Security Approach

Get Permission Zulfikar Ramzan, CTO, RSA Security practitioners must do a much better job of prioritizing their investments based on the most significant risks their organizations face, says Zulfikar Ramzan , chief technology officer at RSA. "CISOs should really think about what matters most to their organization ... What am I trying to protect and why am I trying to protect it?" Then they can use that information to prioritize top threats and determine what investments to make to mitigate them. Ramzan also urges organizations to avoid using dozens of security vendors, removing those that fail to provide value. And he describes the steps organizations should take when "planning for chaos you cannot control," including, for example, conducting a "dress rehearsal" of an incident response plan. In the interview (see audio link below photo), he also offers insights on: Successfully leveraging the right technology ; Vendor risk management; and Effective risk mitigation controls. As CTO at RSA, Ramzan is responsible for leading the development of the company's technology strategy and bringing innovations to market.
