Salon des Refuses – Code is not just text – Felienne

Blog This paper describes the current state of code editors, and how they could improve [add link] I am super happy there is a paper about code editors, of course, since mu interest is in unconventional code editors, like Excel and Scratch. Why You Should Check Out The New Firefox Quantum Browser

Why You Should Check Out The New Firefox Quantum Browser Patrick Lucas Austin, Gawker Media Nov 14, 2017, 09.06 PM IST Image credit: Mozilla Mozilla claims its updated web browser is twice as fast as its last one, and uses a lot less memory than the competition-Google Chrome in particular. It's called Firefox Quantum , and it might give the web's most popular web browser a run for its money. How Quantum Compares to Chrome Firefox Quantum is twice as fast as the previous build of Firefox, according to the company's benchmark tests comparing Quantum to both Chrome and the previous version of Firefox. Its memory tests showed a noticeable decrease in memory usage compared to Google Chrome on Windows 10 and Linux; on macOS 10.12, memory usage was pretty much the same. If you're a Chrome user ( or a Lifehacker reader ), you're probably aware of how much memory the web browser uses. A reduction in memory use means faster web browsing , the ability to have more tabs open at once, and less of a chance that your computer decides to slow down while it does some memory cleanup. Advertisement There are some pretty nifty features included in Quantum, too: like built-in screenshot functionality and improved tracker blocking. A Library button gives you access to your saved content like bookmarks, your Pocket reading list, and screenshots, making extensions for these services obsolete. (That being said, you can still use any Firefox extensions you love, from companies like Ghostery, LastPass, and other third-party developers.) How to Download and Sync You can snag the new browser from Mozilla's site . To take advantage of its syncing features that ensure you can access your Firefox browsing history and other preferences on its iOS and Android apps, as you do with your Google account, you'll need a Firefox Account. Image credit: Mozilla You can set one up right when you open Firefox Quantum. Just enter your email address and password, and specify which information you'd like to sync between devices. You can import your data from Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, or Google Chrome to stay synced and spare yourself the tedium of re-entering passwords.

Two Ways to Make Trump's Tweets a Little Less Awful

Two Ways to Make Trump's Tweets a Little Less Awful Leigh Anderson, Gawker Media Nov 14, 2017, 11.06 PM IST The president's Twitter account is unprecedented as a communications strategy, a stream-of-consciousness series of communiques that strike fear into the heart of any American who wants to, I dunno, avoid war or keep on having a Constitution. But his Twitter rants, as bizarre and as unhinged as they frequently are ("covfefe") are at least a sort-of window into his thought processes. I mean, I'd rather know what he's thinking than not know. But that doesn't make the experience of reading these childish, misspelled rants any easier. Fortunately, there's a new Chrome plug-in that automatically converts the text of his tweets to crayon font. Childish on my part? A little. But the font reminds me that we're not dealing with a functioning adult here, and we shouldn't ever pretend we are. Advertisement Prefer a more serious strategy for getting through the president's personal news channel? Try following @RealPressSecBot , which gives you all Trump 's tweets formatted as official White House statements. This also doesn't make them go down any easier, but the juxtaposition of the format and the juvenile content serves as a daily reminder: This is not normal.

How to hack into one of the world's largest banks, thrice

How to hack into one of the world's largest banks, thrice www.techgig.com | techgig.com Nov 14, 2017, 05.51 PM IST IT Security Image Credit Continue reading Having a trained and dedicated cybersecurity team is very important to fight against cyber attacks. Most companies opt for penetration testing by an external agency to identify the vulnerabilities in their tech stack which can be exploited by hackers. Most banks have the highly skilled cybersecurity team in place to fight against the breach attempts. Most banks believe that their state of the art system itself is capable of preventing hacking attempts. Global banks have millions of dollars of a budget for the cybersecurity solutions. However, there is no computer system in the world that is 100% hack-proof. Sahir Hidayatullah, the founder of cybersecurity company, Smokescreen Technologies has described the penetration testing performed by his company on one of the world's largest banks. He has explained three ways how his company managed to hack into the bank's system. Method 1: Cell-phone hacking You can easily find out the name of bank's IT manager through a couple of phone calls. The team from Smokescreen Technologies prints brochures inviting the IT manager of this particular bank to an event. There is also a printed lucky draw scratch cards that have the same prize - an iPhone. The executive from Smokescreen Technologies reaches out to the IT manager to hand over the invitation to the conference along with the scratch card. His eyes lit up as he sees the prize. The message on the scratch card mentions, "To send you the iPhone, I need your attendee code from the attendee registration form on this CD." With an excited mood, the IT manager inserts the CD into his computer, which executes the malware on his system. The cybersecurity research firm earns the first backdoor into the bank's system. Method 2: Human Resources In any organization, nobody messes with the HR and Payroll departments. You can easily write a quick phishing email pretending to be from one of these departments to get hold of employee's systems. Smokescreen Technologies sent a phishing email to bank's employees containing the following message- "Dear Valued Employee, We're once again conducting our H.R. Employee Satisfaction Survey. This year, you've been selected to represent your department. The survey lets you rate your reporting manager and provide feedback on whether you are satisfied with your compensation. All responses will be kept strictly confidential. Please do not share details of this survey with your peers. Please click the following link to the survey form and log in with your regular employee username and password." An email was sent to a selection of employees that worked with ATM, cardholder data and transaction system's department. Within two hours, the cybersecurity firm received 40 phished usernames and passwords, which resulted in 84% success rate. Method 3: Complimentary upgrades Everybody likes the free upgrades. The cybersecurity firm sent one of their employees to the bank, which figured out how to get inside the bank as a hardware vendor. Each vendor in the bank had a specific ID with an electronic badge. Figuring out how to clone these IDs is a no-brainer's task. An employee of Smokescreen Technologies walks into the bank with cloned ID and few new keyboards under his arm. He walks into the cabins of three traders and announces, "Hey I'm from I.T., I'm here to install your keyboard upgrade." The modified keywords contain a wireless keystroke recorder that can record everything that is typed on it. Nobody refuses the free upgrades. By the evening, a team from Smokescreen Technologies manages to record everything that traders typed using the keyboard. - Rajat Kabade
