Redefining Retail with Artificial Intelligence: Tesco

Technology/ Skill News Image Credit Continue reading Technological and industrial advances that have brought about economies of scale, have forced retail firms to evolve into a race for achieving the most optimal, efficient and lean operation, i.e. the ability to deliver the promise of the right product at the right place at the right time at the right price. Online shopping in the mid-90s brought convenience and increased expectations of immediacy. Since then, there has been a sea of change in advancements and expectations alike, on account of a number of factors like analytics, business intelligence, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Since the 90s, decision support systems have helped planners, buyers, marketers, finance professionals and warehousing and retail operators with analysis and decision-making. However, these required the underlying data to be clean and reliable and that the right set of metrics be defined to allow the right decisions to be made. Back then, AI was naive at best, inflexible and needed to be hand-coded as the lack of libraries, native technical support and raw compute power made AI difficult to build. According to a McKinsey report, the top 10 global retailers from 1990 to 2010 changed significantly, with only 4 of the top 20 in 1990 even being on the list in 2010. With changing demographics, new business models emerged as an outcome of it. It became clear that only those who were serious about data, analytics and AI for decision-making had survived. Over time, with AI being accepted as the norm, data has become reliable while compute and storage have become readily available, more powerful, cheaper and elastic. Retailers who had invested in fragmented applications of AI, started staring at bigger questions and answers for AI to solve. Perhaps the first application of AI in retail is demand forecasting at a product, location and time level which enhances customer experience and facilitates the efficient use of company funds. Many retailers employ a layered approach to disaggregate the component parts and then aggregate them together. Advanced AI algorithms can be leveraged to correlate climate and weather patterns to arrive at product mix optimization which determines which products should sell at which locations and at what time. At a macro-product level, even before the forecasting, assortment planning can leverage AI to optimize the top-down, bottom-up and middle-out projections of the product assortment to reconcile these. The granular demand forecasting also defines where the product should be made available, i.e. in a store or a fulfilment center. Shelf space optimization solves the more granular problem of where the product should be placed within the store or fulfilment center and is typically based upon the sales velocity of the item, how conveniently is the shelf located, etc. At a macro-business planning level, where to locate the store or fulfilment center in itself is an optimization technique that retailers solve based upon population, target customer demographics, competition, access to ports and store footfall. Transporting products between locations to locations to be made available in the right place at the right time is the biggest concern for every retail logistics operation. This involves optimizing primary and secondary routes at a planning level as well as optimizing primary and secondary trips at a daily scheduling and operational level. The ability to adjust to business or non-business changes on a real-time basis makes this problem more complex to deal with. Resource capacity optimization is used especially during peak seasons like holidays and festivals when contract staff is required to allow the business to stay flexible when the demand spikes. In addition to these traditional applications of AI to increase margins and improve customer experience, retailers are exploring, building and even productionizing new ways to apply AI to broader, deeper and granular areas. Automation and robots have started playing a role in back-office, warehousing and fulfilment center operations, such as storing and retrieving products from warehouse locations. Every step further in this direction requires more information to be available to the algorithms to figure out the shortest path, most efficient place to store the products, etc. Therefore, some traditional problem statements such as shelf space optimization are eliminated as a result of warehouse automation. Customer experience is being enriched as a result of personalization and learning of customer behavior from both offline and online channels, paving the way for a true omni-channel experience. Conversational AI-enabled customer service agents are gaining popularity and are positioned to serve even fully capable experiences by employing big data, machine learning and natural language processing. These are built upon the personal and digital assistants that have been in existence for a few years now. Magic mirrors and virtual mirrors that provide visualizations applying augmented reality, are being piloted. Computer vision will be used to identify customers, automatically create basket as well as optimize checkout lines. It is clear that AI is being and will continue to be applied to every problem that can be optimized in isolation. That the global optima are desirable than local optima is well known. How AI crosses the chasm to arrive at global organizational optimization is something that remains to be seen. Online fraudsters dupe 30 people within a week in Lucknow

Thirty residents of Lucknow have reported being duped by online fraudsters in last seven days. These cases are being investigated by the cyber cell of Lucknow police. The police suspect a gang of cybercriminals from Bihar and Jharkhand could be behind these targeted scams. A Facebook user lodged a complaint about the ransom demand after her account was hacked. The female user has lodged the complaint in Indiranagar police station. An unidentified hacker first took over her Facebook account and started messaging her friends. The messages clearly demand Rs 3,000 to get her Facebook login credentials back. The lady came to know about the incident after her friends called her and informed about the ransom demand. In another incident, a government employee Kamal Bhartiya was duped by an online insurance company. Kamal bought an insurance policy that promised him to double his insurance money. The anonymous insurance company sent him an online form requiring him to deposit Rs 10,000 in two installments in an account registered in the State Bank of India. After Kamal made the deposit, he did not receive any policy document by courier which was promised to him. He received a call after a week asking him to deposit additional Rs 5000 to avail the insurance. Even after depositing the amount, Kamal did not receive any document. The agent's mobile was switched off after that. Another case reported is regarding Aadhaar scam. A representative claiming to be an official of the State Bank of India called Preeti Ghidiyal, a resident of Sarvodaya Nagar. The caller asked Preeti to link her Aadhaar with the bank account. The claimed official asked the details of Preeti's debit card and asked to share the OTP (one-time password) received on the registered mobile number. The SBI customer was assured that this is to verify the Aadhaar linking process. In 20 minutes, Preeti received two messages from SBI confirming the deduction of Rs 25,000 in each transaction. A retired deputy superintended of police too was duped for Rs 20,000. The police officer, Krishna Kant has filed a complaint describing the similar incident as Kamal Bharitya. Krishna Kant received a call from a representative claiming to be a bank official. The caller took details of Krishna's debit card and warned that if he fails to provide the details, the card will be blocked. The inspector from Lucknow's cyber cell department has confirmed receiving these complaints. The police officer, VS Sirohi confirms that the cyber cell department has received 30 such complaints in just one week. While the police are investigating these reports, they suspect a gang operating from Bihar and Jharkhand are targeting the residents of Lucknow. - Rajat Kabade

Cyberattacks: 2 billion Data Records breached in 2017

Cyberattacks: 2 billion Data Records breached in 2017

The recent attacks on internet companies suggest that efforts to protect the digital data are fragile. A survey suggests the first six months of 2017 reported 918 data breach reports in the world. These breaches collected almost 2 billion data records in targeted cyber attacks. The number of reported attacks this year have increased by 13% as compared to the reported incidents in 2016. The data records that were stolen last year were just 721 million. The actual numbers could be higher as 59% of data breaches related to compromised records were unreported. Indian contributes to majority part of these stolen data records. These data breaches include series of targeted attacks on healthcare service providers, government organizations, and telecom operators. The sensitive data about the citizens compromised in these attacks is being sold for as low as $5 on the dark web. The statistics published by Gemalto Breach Level index suggest that 74% of total data breaches result in the theft of 254 million compromised records. The accident loss is the biggest source of stolen data. Over 1.6 billion records were stolen due to accidental attacks and ignorance of the IT team. These 1.6 billion records were compromised from just 166 breaches. According to the security experts, India invests a very small amount of its overall budget on the security. The shift in security strategy is extremely important for an organization that collects sensitive data from users. Since it is proven that networks can be compromised using multiple loopholes, IT security teams need to focus on safeguarding the data than protecting the network. In India, Reliance Jio customer data was leaked in July this year. The data breach resulted in the loss of 100 million data records. While Jio Infocomm denies the report of these news, police complaints by users confirm that the breach affected a large proportion of total Jio users. The infamous Aadhaar data leak resulted in the loss of 1.3 crore data records. A claim was denied by the UIDAI, Aadhaar authority. However, the data of Indian users is reportedly available for sale on the dark web. Zomato confirmed the data breach in the month of May. The Email IDs and passwords of 17 million users were compromised. The popular food delivery app confirms that financial information of these users was not compromised. However, since most of the Internet users tend to use the same passwords on all platforms, the impact of these data leak is much bigger. Security experts believe that internet companies and government organizations need to work on breach prevention strategies. Securing the data and implementing end-to-end encryption should be the main priority for organizations around the world. Introducing multi-factor authentication for the servers where data is stored can help in reducing the number of attacks. Looking at the history of recent attacks, cybercriminals are more interested in acquiring this data to sell it on the dark web. Ensuring encryption of the sensitive information will help in preventing the further damage. Less than 5% of the reported data breach incidents involved encrypted data. - Rajat Kabade

The rising world of ‘Artificial Intelligence’- Opinion, IT News, ET CIO

AI The rising world of ‘Artificial Intelligence’- Opinion AI can completely change marketing approaches due to its innate ability to bring the business closer to the customers. ETCIO | November 01, 2017, 08:00 IST Newsletter A A By- Rajesh Razdan History has witnessed many technological reformations the birth of computing machines , the internet, smartphones and social media. While we may not know what the future would hold true for us, we can predict that it may have something to do with Artificial Intelligence ( AI ).Artificial Intelligence, a term coined by John McCarthy, a computer scientist was based on the concepts of an English mathematician Alan Turing, often referred to as the father of modern computers. Till date the only test that matters to verify if a machine is imitating a human or the computer itself is by checking if it is as responsive as us, also known as the ‘Turing test’.The first instance of an artificially intelligent machine was the development of chess playing computers. One of the popular examples of such a machine was IBM’s Deep Blue, which defeated the then world chess champion Gary Kasparov in 1997. Over a period, computers with advanced capabilities have been utilized by different corporations to benefit their business functions.AI is not just a plot device for sci-fi movies but has been integrated in our lives for quite some time now. Virtual assistants have been hard at work trying to provide simple services to make our lives efficient. Utility of such AI assistants have been exceptional and help users source information from the internet, shop, manage our schedule, remind us of appointments, navigate among various other things. One valuable addition of AI is its incorporation into business functions. In telecommunications, AI can completely change marketing approaches due to its innate ability to bring the business closer to the customersIn India, AI and data analytics driven marketing can be a useful ally for businesses. Platforms built on voice recognition and natural language understanding ( NLU ) / chat language understanding ( CLU ) can be used to identify the subscribers’ preferences by the utilization of big data analytics and artificial intelligence. The AI is now able to understand over 40 languages and utilize speech synthesis to communicate in over 80 languages from all over the world.Customer engagement in the modern world consists of numerous touchpoints like chatbots , virtual assistants, instant messaging, IVR, mobile and the web. Handling these copious touchpoints would require a smarter, faster and scalable system. An efficient AI will utilize superior speech and language recognition capabilities, interpret the meaning of words and data and apply context and reasoning to improve from its interactions and provide improved customer experience. Using AI and behavioral data, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) can now ensure that they present the right offer at the right time using the right channel for each subscriber. This helps CSPs connect subscribers with the most relevant services. With the power of AI CSPs can take advantage of this unique position by continuously analyzing offer conversion rates, subscriber profiles, content usage, and network activity, and thereby, create and place offers that are tailored and relevant to each subscriber.By becoming aware of every customer communication, AI will possess decision making capabilities for future interactions. The platform will be able to identify the user and provide the optimum service based on their profile and relevant behavior. A learning engine based on the subscriber history of online behavior enables conversion as well as fulfillment of the customers’ requirements.AI along with machine learning would be critical for content management, especially in an age where the quantity of content has increased manifold and is proving difficult to manage. With the help of image recognition software, NLU/NLP, voice biometrics and facial recognition AI can help fulfill the promises of managing and thereby controlling huge amounts of content. The future of AI isn’t as depicted in the movies. No super intelligent AI will be overtaking the planet and using humans as energy source, hopefully. But, increased automation of some of the manual processes is highly likely. For example in the fast food industry, complete automation may reduce contamination from human sources and AI integration by means of past behavior can predict the order to drastically reduce turnaround time per customer.Similarly, in various fields of medicine, agriculture, finance, transport, aviation, manufacturing the utilisation of AI would have a significant impact. Especially with the highly likely advent of quantum computing, AI would be smarter, faster, seamless, highly integrated and for a lack of better word human. There are viewpoints that suggest such an event would lead to lack of jobs, akin to automation causing unemployment in the manufacturing sector. But, the truth of the matter is that jobs will change and the rise of a new era will create more employment avenues. AI won’t kill humanity but it’ll re-engineer our thoughts for a better tomorrow.
