Not unlike Indian food and butter chicken abroad, Thai food, unfortunately, often gets limited representation in Asian restaurants in India, besides their creamy green curries and piquant papaya salads. A few specialised eateries however have taken in on themselves to expand this vocabulary, and cater to the growing set of well-travelled gourmands looking for an authentic experience in the city.
Part of this set is Mango Tree, a Bangkok-based restaurant chain that is serving up an authentic Thai experience in cities like Dubai, London, Tokyo and Manila, opening doors to its first-ever Indian outpost in the most bustling part of Juhu, Mumbai, next week. The restaurant features an outer lounge/bar area to cater to the weekend or post-work party set, and a cosier inner dining space for those looking for a meal.
On offer are—yes—Thai green and red curries and raw papaya salad, but also a variety of other specialties that span the coast and mainland of this country. For seafood lovers, the Crab in Yellow Curry Sauce and Two Way Fish come recommended—both served in whole in sizeable portions, making for dramatic centrepieces on the table. For meat lovers, the Massaman Curry Lamb Shanks—with the lamb imported from Australia—makes a good option, but the slow roasted pork ribs with tamarind sauce and chargrilled lamb rack are also tempting picks from the menu.
Vegetarians will find more than a few options to pick from, and their bar eats version of the papaya salad—tempura-fried slivers of imported raw papaya served with a sweet and spicy sauce—is likely to be a popular go-to for people looking for something to munch on with their drinks. The Sour and Spicy Salad of Lentils and Chickpeas (a sprout salad) and Paneer Satay (diced paneer grilled with bell peppers and onions) are also tasty—if veering towards Indian—dishes on offer for non-meat eaters.
Among desserts, you could pick the more traditional fare of water chestnut ice cream and sticky rice and mango, but it’s the nut-filled brownie served with caramel, banana and a scoop of toasted coconut ice cream that takes the star—a perfectly decadent end to your indulgent meal. 1 /10
