CHELSEA star Eden Hazard insists his hopes of joining Real Madrid depend on whether his current club put up a fight to keep him.
The Belgian has made no secret of his desire to join the La Liga giants, claiming earlier this week that he has dreamt of playing for Real Madrid since his childhood having also teased a potential transfer over the summer.
Asked about wanting to win the Ballon d’Or and whether he needed to be in Spain to do so given Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s 10-year duopoly of the award while at Barcelona and Real Madrid, Hazard smiled to reporters while on international duty: “That’s why I want to go, maybe.”
The 27-year-old’s future is a hot topic having lit up the Premier League so far this season following a strong World Cup for his country, in which he was recognised as the tournament’s second-best performer with the Silver Ball.
Hazard has seven goals and three assists in just eight top-flight games so far this term to help Chelsea stay unbeaten in the league and sit joint top of the table with rivals Manchester City and Liverpool on 20 points.
The Londoners are understandably keen to try and tie Hazard down with his current Stamford Bridge contract running out in the summer of 2020, meaning current European champions Madrid are widely expected to launch an attempt to sign him next summer.
It is thought Hazard was offered an extension worth £300,000-a-week at Chelsea but that the player could not be convinced into signing a new deal despite being happy at the club.
Recent reports have indicated that Hazard would be happy to stay with the Premier League side if he cannot join Real Madrid – but that if Los Blancos indicate they will move for him, he will request a transfer.
And his latest hint suggests his priority is very much to move to the Spanish capital, though only if a transfer is “allowed” – suggesting that perhaps he may not be the one to ultimately decide where he will play his football in 2019-20.
He told reporters: “I’m going to stop [talking about Madrid].
“Let me say this. If I play for Real Madrid, I will be very happy.
“If I never play for Real Madrid, it is because it is not allowed. And then I will be happy at Chelsea.”
Despite his claims, the speculation concerning Hazard and his future will continue until next summer.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri – who Hazard praised for his attacking approach recently – meanwhile hopes to see the attacker continue to improve his output.
“Hazard is immense and I don’t think even he knows how much he can still improve,” the Chelsea boss told Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.
“I said he could end up in the tight circle of the best three or four players in the world. The problem is he plays to enjoy himself and at times doesn’t realise the importance of moving from fun to reaping the rewards.
“At the end of the day, you’ve got to get the fruits of your labour. Hazard’s approach is a positive, but it can become a potential limitation too.
“He needs to lift his head up, look around and realise there’s a whole world in front of him that he can dictate with his feet for the good of the collective and not just the individual.
“He said such kind words about me, I wasn’t expecting that. His contract expires in 2020, but he’s staying here.”
Sarri also revealed that he could end up utilising Hazard as a false nine in the future.
He added: ”I was tempted to use Hazard as a centre-forward and I might consider it again in future, but it’s not the right time now. We need to believe in Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata.”
