WhatsApp is easily one of the most used communication application in India and abroad . So much so that people prefer to send a text via WhatsApp rather than making a call and speaking to the other person. By the way, calls can also be made on WhatsApp including group calls . However, therein lies the problem. Over the last few years, WhatsApp has become one of the key mediums for spreading spam , hate messages and even fake news.
With so much information being shared via WhatsApp, Indian government got concerned about it and because of these issues that you would’ve seen recent changes like labeling the forwarded messages , more control to group Admins and forward restriction to maximum five people or groups at a time. The last one being India specific shows how grave the situation is. A recent case of a mob fury caused by circulation of fake news via WhatsApp has not helped the matters.
Reports now say that in response to Indian Governments requests, WhatsApp may be looking to build a team based in India to counter fake news spreading via the app. Though one of the key demands from the Government of “Traceability” and attribution of messages has not been honored by the platform.
“Attributing messages on WhatsApp would undermine the private nature of WhatsApp and create the potential for serious misuse. Our focus is on improving WhatsApp and working closely with others in society to help keep people safe," stated a WhatsApp spokesperson.
Though WhatsApp has expressed a deep commitment to helping people in India to communicate in a safe, secure and a reliable manner.
